The Redneck Manifesto – I am Brazil (as recommended by PORICK)
Over the years I have heard many instrumental ‘post rock’ albums to the point of being a little bored of them. I feel as if they usually are missing something, vocals perhaps. On first impression I thought this about, I am Brazil, on my second listen, I thought differently. Complex melody seems to fill the gap a little and clever time and tempo changes keep the repetitive mathematical nature of the music interesting. I would not say that this is the best album of this genre; however it is far from average.
Personally I prefer the harder edge of this style of music and find that I identify with more melancholic feeling stuff. This album has a nice progression and has a nice sound-track-ish quality. It is beautifully produced and the clarity and accuracy of the musicianship, is at time, astounding. I understand why PORICK recommended this and I am glad now to have it.
I do think that this is one of those albums that you have to be in the mood for. As background music it is perfect, one of those albums that will grab you attention sporadically. Thanks again PORICK

i believe all north american versions of the cd release (there are several) include "dead eyes opened". while there's no tracklist given, i think it's fair to assume that these copies include it.

Sun Ra - Sun Song (as recomended by pulseclock)
Jazz for me is a lot like figure skating, I can see the skill and dedication that doing it takes. The end result just bores me.
I know that jazz is the foundation to contemporary music, I am also aware that modern beds evolved from piles of straw on the ground, but I am happy with my bed and have no wish to sleep on straw.
It is safe to assume that I did not enjoy listening to Sun Song it may be the best jazz album ever, I don't know. It all sounds the same to me. I can appreciate the complexity of it all. I can see why it would appeal to some people and I am sure that they have fun playing it. Thanks pulseclock, just not my thing.

i'm disappointed in you, 010101. not only is jazz not the foundation of contemporary music, but to compare a work of art to a bed of straw? especially since sun ra is light years away from the origins of jazz music. i don't take issue with your lack of pleasure in experiencing the album. i just expected that you might have something interesting or insightful to offer in reaction to the experience.

I would suggest Messages from the Hub by Jimpster.
Really totally lovely album. As one of the Amazon reviews says: "Each instrument melds with the other to form a sonic fondue that completely satisfies."
It is one of my absolute favourites, and no doubt will be one of yours too.

Perhaps it was a bad analogy, sorry if you took offence. I know little to nothing about jazz as I know little to nothing about sleeping on straw because I don’t find either particularly attractive options. I know someone who will probably love this album if they are not already aware of it; in fact this is what he is getting for his birthday!
You obviously enjoy this, I don’t have a desire to attempt to even understand it.

i'm not a fan of sun ra, although i'm not familiar with this particular recording. he's got an intimidatingly huge catalog. like you, it just doesn't suit my tastes (at the moment).
if you're not interested in understanding, what's motivating you to review albums dictated by tastes that are not your own? the sun ra review felt like reading a review of a steakhouse by a vegetarian.
because it's the internet i should say that i'm only curious, i don't have any interest in whether you are right or wrong. i do think it's an intriguing idea, reviewing unfamiliar favorites of others.

Jazz is really just like elctronic music, except there's usually a definitive form and structure to it. But the melodies and drums and everything its all similar just with acoustic/brass instruments and not analog or digital sounds
trust me i heard the album too, i didnt really find it that spectacular eaither, it WAS one his first records, if you really want to see the heart of this man, watch this video now

actually what i just said was bullshit, what i meant to say is that they're both really similar in that there is alot of freedom in what you can do, but jazz has an actual structure and pattern to it, alot like blues, cept jazz was all amercian

Ace of Base - Happy Nation (as recomended by vlari)
The first thing that struck me was that the girl can sing. I guess I have just become used to vocoded pitch corrected contempory pop. Most of the songs are about going out and dancing, which is good. Their later albums about vivisection and euthenasia were disturbing to say the least.
The cover version of Bananarama's Cruel Summer is better than the original. It is unsophisticated music, it has dated due to technological advancement, but they seem to do a good job with a limited pallet.
I would not have chosen to listen it normaly but I am glad I did. Thank you vlari

Try fusion-era Miles Davis. I recommend Dark Magus or Live Evil.
I don't consider myself a jazz fan either, but I love what Miles did during this time period (late 60's to mid 70's).

The Natural Yogurt Band - Away With Meloncholy (as recomended by mohamed)
This is another one of those cases where there is something missing. With this genre it is hard not to draw comparisons to Beastie Boys, Air and Luke Vilberts Nuggets Album. I found myself thinking, 'That would make a great loop' but on the whole I found that it got tired really fast. It is quirky and fun and I am sure that one track would make a nice change every now and again.
The stand out track for me was called The Woods which is a piano led track quite different from the rest of the album which is mostly Moogy synths.
Thanks Mohammed, I think I will enjoy this more when the tracks pop up in shuffle. Not bad and I would recommend this for getting loops from.

Scott Walker - Climate of Hunter (as recomended by SlipDrinkMats)
This is one from 'left-field' and difficult to catorgorise. It is haunting for the fact that it seems so effortless. There is no real hooks in this album it just draws you along. The tone of his voice and his control is facinating. The music juxterposes happy 80's synth sounds with drones which I find interesting.
Again it is an album that I would not chosen myself. When he started to sing I thought that I would hate it but a few tracks in and he had me hypnotised. I found it quite unsettling and oddly dark. I think this is definatly a grower.
Thank you SlipDrinkMats

I'm very glad you gave it a go, and it's interesting what you have to say about it... it's probably not the first place to "start" with Scott Walker (that being "Scott 4", but as time is running out, .... well I'm glad you got something out of the, for me, uneasy mix of 80s and apocalyptic singing,,, "This, is how you disappear, out between midnight"...pfffffffffffff the whole thing slays me. Props to Billy Ocean for his duet singing utter lyrical blasphemies on untilted track 3.
