pure state.

It is in human nature to explore. Just as some do dangerous
things like climb mountains and sail uncharted seas of the
Earth risking life, some of us feel the need to explore the
uncharted territories of different states of mind. Just
because you don't find any benefit in drug use doesn't mean
that nobody else can benefit. It's not right to deny
yourself of a serious curiosity. It's simply a matter of
the person. I'm offended by who ever said drugs eat away
your soul. I've done my share of chemical ingestion and I'd
like to think my soul is as vibrant as any. Those who seem
to let drugs eat away their soul, imo, are the ones who let
drugs amplify the shit that was already there. We are not
so easily manipulated. We all have shit and drug use a sure
way to be forced to face the shit, and if your not ready to
heal those issues they are going to become quite prominant
in your life.

I should say that I have had higher moments in life
experiencing live music without drugs than any of my drug
experiences though. Music is definitely key to getting
high. Sometimes when listening to music I feel like I'm
drinking distilled essence of the artists soul, pure as it
comes.

I love drugs, if you're smart enough to controll them, then
more power to ya! The PC was popularized by long-haired LSD
hippies. The righest man in the world practically
re-invented the stuff while at harvard with his geeky
FRI-ends.

Know your limits, research, research, research.

For those interested: www.EROWID.com - a great resource for
those curious about drukqs. ME WANT APHEX ACID!

drug-induced music then? and don't try say it ain't ,
because IT IS!

as a society we're all exposed to more drugs then we could
ever possibly imagine, i.e.
soda pop (look at the ingredients some time)
aderol
aspirin
tylenol
caffeine
nicotine
all the other crap that they put in tobbacco for "flavor" (i
really should quit)
all the hormones in all the meat you eat, and believe it or
not:
all the hormones in the vegetables you eat, all these things
alter your body, mind, and whatever
so the only advice i have to give, is don't do something
just because it's legal
and PLEASE don't do something just because it's illegal

yada yada
(dedicated to terry fick, august 19 '81- june 7 '01, and i
don't think i need to explain what killed him)

marlowe, define "drug induced" and then i'll be happy to
debate the topic

Ooh, soda is the worst. The benefits to drawback ratio for
soda is very low... I'm thinking about droping it for crack.

soda pop- never, ick! Give me milk.
aderol- never
aspirin-never
tylenol- I never get sick
caffeine- never
nicotine- I'd rather die!

I am one drug free son of a gun!

Well, as for the food things, you're REALLY grasping
there... I guess I take hormones, then.

And as for Aphex's drug induced music, which music IS that?
How can you tell what tracks he did while on acid, etc...
I'm sure the tracks he did while NOT fucked up in the head
are a hell of a lot better.

Drugs don't help these musicians, that's shit rumours that
got out while the Beatles and others were experimenting with
marijuana. It was the cool thing to do. In later interviews,
Lennon always pointed out that the music the Beatles
recorded while high was ''shite''. They'd think it was
great, then go in the next day to listen to last night's
work, and erase the drug induced shit. Even the CRAZIEST
Beatles songs were done while NOT on drugs. They couldn't
make tracks under the influence of chemicals.

And of COURSE people think they're more creative when
stoned/high/tripping/whatever... they're on DRUGS! They'll
think anything. The walls are trying to eat me, there's a
black hole in ground about to swallow me up, my music is
good...

I believe Ophecks has a point. Most music made while on
drugs is shit. However, bands like Grateful dead or Coil
claim to have been influenced by their experiences while on
acid. In fact, here's an excerpt from COIL's interview in
WIRE, I think it explains a lot:
PC: I'd have to say, though, for me there's no difference
between chemically altered states, spiritual states and
magic. Psychedelics specifically. . . it opens you up to
something that objectively exists. Well, all experience is
subjective, there is no other kind but the places that you
go to with those drugs are just as real for you as. . .
Croydon.

JB: I mean these places have been accurately mapped by
certain people including John Dee. Certain people can access
these areas, like Amazonian shamen, Terrence McKenna,
certain people. Some people using their 'maps' precisely
will go to the same place and have comparable experiences -
the equivalent of geographical regions. You go there and you
see what is there.

PC: Having said that I would also say that I think that
taking those drugs in an environment where there are loud
noises and bright lights and it's difficult to breathe is
totally detrimental to the experience you have when you're
on them. I mean we did go to a lot of raves but that's how
we worked that out. I certainly wouldn't recommend that.

the only good thing i think is that you get more emotional
when i am drunk.
it can end up with a really nice melodie with a lousy
prroduction.
i dont know really?

so, ophecks, having never done drugs you claim to be some
kind of expert on the experience? if you have never done
drugs, how can you tell what it feels like? i can't believe
the narrow-mindedness of some of you -- just spouting out
trite rubbish, ie "The walls are trying to eat me, there's a

black hole in ground about to swallow me up, my music is
good..." when jimi hendrix asks "are you experienced?" i
believe your answer will be "no"

MUSIC
-------
jimi hendrix
led zeppelin
the who
de la soul
the byrds
the stooges
donovan
bob dylan
louis armstrong
john coltrane
the doors
charlie parker

LITERATURE ETC
----------------
james joyce
lord byron
hunter s thompson
robert anton wilson
philip k dick
ken kesey
tom wolfe
aldous huxley

...now you may come back and say "look! some of them died
because they took drugs!" well, so what if some overdosed
(people overdose on things other than drugs constantly) -
the beauty they created outlasts their physical mortality -
we could all go at any time, and living life by the rules
made up to pander to rich capitalists is just wrong... ganja
was made illegal not because people were getting high but
because hemp was cheaper than wood and rockefeller didn't
want to lose money.

some people have addictive personalities - some people like
to self-destruct... it is normally the loud majority that
get mistaken for the quiet minority.

well stated canerfold.
just because drugs aren't for everyone, it doesn't mean
nobody should do them. i did my fair share of exploration;
most of it was good, some of it was bad but i wouldn't trade
any of those experiences for anything. I know that my life
is very different than it would have been. my life
philosophy, and perspective has been positively effected by
my experiences.
just be careful and make sure you experiment in a safe place
with safe people and take it slow.

I hear some good points here. This thread turned to be quite
good after all.

The problem with drugs in our society is social more than
health. Where other cultures use different drugs for sacred/
social/ ritual reasons, we have this stupid recreational use
of drugs. That's a big part of the drugs problem.

Oh, by the way, I think Coltrane's best music was made after
he stopped using heroin (after love supreme, that is), but
that's just my opinion. He was such a spiritual searcher
that drugs were just a small part of it.

yeah evol, i don't regret anything. if i did i wouldn't be
able move on. every moment is a lesson and to regret a
moment is to not progress.

i agree that making music while on drugs is not usually a
good thing, but a lot of music is inspired by drug
experience and not necessarily made while high or whatever.

example: the beachboys. you may think "pop crap" but
that's only the stuff you hear on the radio. like the
beatles, they began making simple pop sounds. the album
"pet sounds" came out after what's his name began trying out
the ganja and who knows if there was anything else involved,
but its lush. a huge step forward. and one of their albums
made the hmv top psychedelic albums, same one the features
music has the right to children. then again the drug
experimentation is not necessarily the cause of the new
direction in music and might just be a corolation. trying
out some new states of mind, some new forms of musical
expression, and its all good!
