Doom3 is actually pretty long.

I've been playing it forever and just got outa hell
recently. True, a lot of the levels look "the same" when
you can hardly see anything :p but man, it's like each
level has it's own little "theme". Which is pretty badass
if you can experience it how it's supposed to be
experienced.

Granted we can't all run at 60fps solid cranked with 5.1,
but I'm still chuggin' away on my 9800pro 1024x High.

The audio, like i've said before, is almost more important
than graphics in this game. Same with any "scary movie" ...
the suspense buildup, the ambient music ... it plays so well
together.

qrter,

"small bits and pieces get leaked, be it accidental or on

purpose, id still says nothing: you get a hype.

you can damn well be sure of it that id was very happy with

the hype - that's what sells games in the first instance.
"

True, but I think stayin silent is better than what Valve is
doing right now.

ID SOFTWARE has stayed silent because they have nothing to
talk about. They showed a few demos (E3) on what the
upcoming technology was going to be capable of. Simple as
that. "This is what we have to work with for our next
generation game."

You think that the E3 doom3 leak was "positive" for id?!
Dood, they were fucking ungodly pissed (we've all read
internal memoes, etc.... that was ages ago) but yes it did
add some hype.

Do they give a shit? Eh, I guess. They've proved
themselves and already ahve the community behind them.
There is no need for them to go out of their way to "hype
up" something like Valve is doing.

Oh wait, Valve is just pissing people off with release date
attemps.

Sigh, I wish they would just STFU until they finished it.

Oh well.

Let's see

Valve:

a) got a large chunk of source code stolen
b) script leak
c) many other little "issues"

Not to mention their "$6million dollar ties" with ATI.

So basically they are paying Valve to make the game run
better on ATI (speculative opinion, of course ;)

>>>"But didn't NVIDIA do the same with ID SOFTWARE?!"

The answer is NO.

John Carmack stated years ago what his new engine would be
requirering, the diferent render paths (ARBs, NV30, ETC).

Is it NVIDIA's fault that they designed their HARDWARE
aruond SOFTWARE / TECHNOLOGY that was going to be coming out
in 3 years, and be used HEAVILY for the next 5 after that
?!

Umm, no? I call it smart move, since JC is basically one of
the (if not, THEE) most influencal person in computer gaming
right now. He talks; everyone listens....that is if they
can understand what he's saying ;)

Now,

Now,

ATI has had shitty OGL drivers, for how long?

And usually NVIDIA has scaled quite well in OGL but fell
back on DIRECT X (where ATI usually takes crown).

So, remember when the preliminary benchmarks came out, and
ATI was kinda int he lead (because of the ARB path vs NV30,
where the nv30 couldn't run the same arb path) so you know

ATI kinda had it coming, but NVIDIA got off their asses and
STOLE IT BACK, and literally DEMOLISHED the benchmarks.

Now,

Valve software; who knows what's going on over there with
that $6million hangin over their heads.

Oh, what happened with all the 9800 owners; those who BOUGHT
THE ATI CARD because they KNEW it was coming with a free
copy of HL2.

OH WAIT, IT GOT PUSHED BACK.
OWNT BY VALVE.

So now these people have cards that clearly won't be "top
notch" for HL2, and a large portion of the reason they
bought it was because a) free HL2 (valued, $50-55ish) and b)
top of line card at time.

GO GO GO MARKETING SUPERPOWERS

(i haven't played doom3 yet)

but blast em games are fun, but i prefer lots of detail in
my games. Kinda like Morrowind, which was extremely
engrossing. I would like a Morrowind meets Aliens, type of
game, that would be great.

the sound is amazingly well done.

very unnerving. alltogether frightening at times.

i've yet to get at all bored with the game so far.

i'd give it a solid B+ so far.

however, i can definately see how people could thirst for a
more interactive plot. and i completely understand the
complaints about the pervasive darkness... *I* personally
see it as an intergral, and quite unique way to drive home
the atmosphere of claustrophobia. and i think it really
puts you into the main characters shoes. i love it.

id did a facinatingly good job with the doom 3 engine. i
can't wait to see what follows.

and, that's all i have to say about that.

Put it this way.

It makes me want to just quit the game and not play it
anymore. Not because I don't like it....but because the
fucking atmosphere. It's like watching a scary movie and
trying to brace yerself for the scary parts.

Kinda funny .... man, i'm gettin so close now.

everyone carrries on about plot for DOOM 3

get the facts - DOOM has never been about plotline. for
fucks sake, DOOM is about:

1) Atmosphere
2) Getting to do what most people have wanted to do - be the
hero

if anyone needs a refresher on the whole "thing" behind the
DOOM mythos, just play the games....all of them:

Ultimate DOOM
DOOM II: Hell On Earth
Final DOOM: Evilution
Final DOOM: The Plutonia Experiment
DOOM 3

I played Doom 3 for about an hour yesterday. It ran oke with
640 x 480. It has quite an athmosphere. But some how I just
didnt like the game, but it had some cool things.
Graphically it rocked, the engine will be a great base for
future games.

I don't understand how slow everything is running for you
with your specs.

There is seriously a driver conflict or another issue .....
i'm sorry, but no way you shouldn't be able to run 800x600
high settings.

i can't run on high without some lag when the fighting gets

If you want to argue graphics or something.....

I was only bringing forward the "arguments" many
"mis-informed" people have when compairing these two
games....and I hope that I killed off a lot of those
misconceptions.

"call me insane, but I actually want a plotline.

That's fine. Each game has a different perspective on what

You really need to start backing up your little "comments" -
seriously. Calling me an id-fanboy? Please.. I will have
a copy of HL2 before most people, that is for sho.

Please explain to me how I'm an "id-fanboy"

I'm DYING to know. Just because I know a little something
about the graphics industry? Because they have produced
games I like, does this make me a fan-boy? Eh, I guess my
brain just tends to think that hey, I've liked all their
releases in the past, chances are I will like the next one
in the future.

But that doesn't take away anything I've said on the state
of graphics.

Eh, probably not.

Will I enjoy HL2?

Eh, probably.

As I've stated above, two different games....and it seems
like people just CANNOT enjoy both games (even tho HL2 isn't
out).

OMG THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE WINNER!!!!

Yes, I totally don't share Qrter's view on storyline in
Doom, or the lack thereof. If there was any more narrative
in a game like that, fucking up the pure visceral
experience, I'd be upset and bored, and I'd probably have to
cringe a few times too. But that's the great thing about
not being human, we can all disagree. But sometimes we can't
agree to do that!

I think I'll like Half Life more than Doom, the AI looks
really interesting, and THAT'S the kind of game where I'll
welcome a strong storyline.

I'm in no hurry for Half Life to be released. I have to get
a new computer anyway, and there's already a stack of games
10 feet high to play through in the next few months. Even if
the game was set back to 2005, I'd be fine with that. Time
to prepare, and time to beat the incoming flood of AAA
console games.

HL2 = Great for those who want a plot line AND a good
shooter with a cracking graphics and physics engine

Doom 3 = Great for those who just want a blaster with
cracking graphics.

Two different types of people but both just as vehement on
their choice of game as the other.

what kind of physics engine is hl2 going to sport?

like moving things around realistically? interaction with
the environment? realistic water (ooh, i hope so)?

...ripping people's arms off and beating them to death with
the thing?

It'll use the Havok engine for starters.

The physics look fantastic. You can pick a lot of things up
and use them as weapons. There's a video somewhere, I think
it's the one thqat pf linked before, that shows the
manipulator gun using a spanner and throwing it at the
headcrab.

The water is realistic. In the CS:S there's a video stress
test you can go into if you edit the map and put spawn
points on. There's some wood there which actually floats on
the water when broken. Everything has a weight attached to
it etc. I can't really describe it very well but things
basically react as they should. Using taht manipulator gun
you can wrench a sign off a wall and use it as a shield.

There's a video of that too. I've downloaded them from
various sourced over the time.

Videogames are getting so complex it is only taking longer
and longer to develop. : /

And cost millions and millions more dollars.

Which in turn, means you won't see very many games that
"break away from the norm" because 1 failed game can take a
company under pretty easily.

Therefore, management doesn't want designers to go do
something "never done before" because they don't know if it
will be successful or not.

And the gaming industry just doesn't have that kind of
tolerance for a company spending that much time, money, and
resources, to develop a totally new game only to have it
flop.

On a different note, Acclaim just went under : /

Doom3 on 5.1 is quite an experience.

Farcry is the best game out (to this date) to implement
physics and environmental interaction into a game.

Doom3 lacked quite a bit of envir. inter.... I was
displeased at some times ... Although it didn't stop me
from pushing some explosive barrels towards a hallway,
rolling it in then shooting it when something popped out at
me :) hehe ^_^

I believe the 6800 is actually quite loud. It's also a beast
of a card. It's very good but that comes at a cost. That
cost being

It takes up two slots in your machine.

It needs its own power cable. Not straight from the mains
but you get the point.

That's if you get the best one of course.

i have the nVidia GeForce 6800 GT card in mine, the 256MB
version and it's great.

ok it does take up some space, and it does require it's own
power straight from the PSU, but what do you expect? it's a
powerful card :)

HELL KNIGHTS are fucking awesome.

Jeezous YES!

Giginger, every high powered card these days needs an extra
power connector because the AGP spec. wasn't designed to
allocate that kind of power over the bus.

6800 isn't THAT loud. The design is actually quite
inefficient, and some 3rd party coolers are finally coming
along to take care of the issue. (for overclocking, of
course).

I don't feel they were too over the top in Farcry, well I
take that back. I kinda do, like pushing over all the
tables and shit...that started turning my experience from
"real" to "omg wow i can move a table .. WHO GIVES A SHIT"

The barrels worked out great (rolling them down a hill and
what not, but I do agree with you now that I think about it
from yer perspective that they were over the top.

Thanks!

giginger, Doom3 is one of the first (*only) game to really
offer per-pixel (opposed to per-polygon) hit detection.

Also, with the physics engine woring on the bullets.

You can mod the pistol yerself, make the bullets velocity
and "weight" a little stronger.

Then try shotting a monster with the pistol and watch him
get KNOCKED back.

Lol it's awesome!!!

according to planethalflife.com the game is designed to
scale down to lower end machines......they say that it
should run on a 700MHz system with graphics card capable of
DX6.

to be honest i think that information is rather old, but i
still think that it would scale down to slower systems.

i would guess that if you can run DOOM 3 at good frame rates
at high quality and good res, then you should be able to do
so with Half-Life 2
