ah ha ha, sean baby is great:

Notice how without the Cloak of Darkness you have to see
yourself die. Is this Power-Up as stupid and ridiculous as
it seems, or is Wizards and Warriors forcing us to ask
ourselves the classic philosophical question, "Is it better
to lack a higher understanding yet be content, or is the
higher understanding itself worth pain and torture?" This
question got rephrased several years ago with: "Carrot
top fans are genuinely happy, but would you trade brains
with one of them?"
And now thanks to Wizards and
Warriors, philosophy students will get to think about this:
"Is it worth the luxury of actually seeing where your
Nintendo guy is when it means living through the trauma
watching him get eaten alive?"

I read that video game systems control what gets released,
so if you want marketably risky, more unique adventurous
games the computer is where you'll more likely find them. I
can't wait to start searching and finding great comp games.
Plus I'd say the keyboard is much more intuitive than a
controller. The directional pad might be better, but
shoulder buttons suck and a thumb can only hit one button at
once, unless awkwardly positioned.

man, if you ask me, mario 3 holds up to this day. that game
is still fun as all get-out!

by the way, here are some interesting game genie codes for
legend of zelda - i found them out screwing about one day,
and they have interesting effects.
(for six letter codes, leave the last two spots blank)

GANONS - Changes the music to the game. (warning: music may
become annoying)

SPINAL - Makes Link into Two-Face! (each half of him is
different colors, WARNING: May cause game to freeze)

PEPEEE - My brother was being stupid and figured this out,
but it has VERY interesting effects. It doubles the amount
of sprites that appear when you enter a screen. So, if there
are four enemies usually in an area, this code makes it to
where there's eight. Another weird effect of it is that the
Zoras become shapeshifters - constantly changing shape from
Zora, to the old man, to even something that i swear looks
like a boombox. Oh yeah, and this code makes several hidden
doorways appear that are not in either of the quests. They
don't take you anywhere though - you just come back to the
screen you found the door. Weird code, but interesting.

I found sooooo many game genie hacks for SMB 3. It was
unreal. If I come across the book (I wrote them all down)
I'll post a few.

Funniest were the graphical ones. There's one that even
makes mario turn blue and spiky and has more than a slight
resemblance to sonic! (although, for some reason he also
walks at half pace...)

I'm thinking I should buy a NES again. This thread is making
me miss it (altough I think the SNES is a better console
with much more classics released for it).

Or better yet I'd want to own a famicom :-D Have you ever
seen pictures of the famicom-cartridges? They all have
different colors. Outside of Japan we felt special because
zelda had a gold cartridge. But in japan each cartridge has
a different color. Kirby is pink, SMB3 is yellow, etc. Also
the boxart is always better in Japan. And ofcourse
there are all those games that were never released outside
of Japan. Famicom had a transformer-game! A Twinbee-game!
Two Goemon-games even! Why wasn't I born in Japan?!?

mine forever.

I still have an NES, but it just doesn't work! Those things
were poorly designed. In fact, I think mine broke in '89 or
something, and I had to stick a big object in there with the
game to make the ''tray'' thing stay down, or it wouldn't
work. They never should have changed the design. Though I
think there's a gold-colored NES Two that was released in
'91 or '92 that's supposed to be more practical, but I've
never seen one. What a shocker.

Yeah, the actual interface on the cartridge tray is prone to
wearing out, too. You can prolong its life a bit using
things that go between it and the cartridge (like an action
replay). In fact there was an "add-on" for the Famicom
(Japanese Version) that basically sat in the slot and
prevented wear. I've seen on ebay claims of NESes that have
had the tray replaced (presumably with a new, third party
one) to remedy this problem. I've never come across anywhere
offering this service though. I'm waiting for a reliable,
well built, pal compatible, bootleg version of the nes
(maybe with a SNes style cartridge slot) myself...

I used to play gauntlet 2 so much in multiplayer with my

hasn't aged to well though.

"Red Warrior is about to die!" is still used in conversation

THAT is ninja gaiden?! Jesus christ that game was hard! I
remember playing it, but I had forgotten the title.
Presentation on that game was amazing. I think they even
bragged about it in the manual. "cinema-style presentation"
or something like that. But it really was awesome. That game
had a better story than any other NES-game I've ever come
across. The opening sequence was so cool. Two ninja's
standing in the field. Looking straight at each other (close
up of their eyes). Then all of a sudden they start running
towards each other... jump up in the air... title screen.
:-)
I must have played it more than a 100 times before I could
defeat that sucker, but I NEVER skipped any of the
story-scenes.

But like I said it was megahard. In the later levels I kept
calling the Nintendo helpdesk for all the bosses. But the
only thing they could say was: "you've just gotta hit it
alot of times." Haha. Ah, good times. Finally beating it was
an amazing experience.

Yeah, best series ever. Those NES Ninja Gaidens had music to
die for, and the cutscenes were pioneering. It's damn hard
though, all three of them.

The thing I hate about the NES Gaidens is the diabolical
placement of enemies when you're platforming! You go to jump
onto a little ledge and a bird will instantly fly into your
face or a samurai will magically appear on the ledge,
leaving you NO room to do anything but fall down and
splatter onto some spikes.

The music, though... the music is amazing in those games.

Have you ever played/seen the Xbox Ninja Gaiden? Might be
the best game I've ever played, and it actually ISN'T a
pushover. Actually, it bent me over and ninja-raped me in
the ass a few times, just like the NES days. That rarely
ever happens anymore. So that series has got some major
legs.

"and I had to stick a big object in there with the

work.
"

LOL. I never had much problems with mine. (and I used it
ALOT!) But who knows... if I would have kept it, it might
have been broken by now too.

By the time the SNES came out... it made the nes-games look
pretty horrible. No sprite-flicker, multi-layer scrolling.
And ofcourse there was F-Zero... those graphics managed to
hypnotize me for a long time when I first saw the demo in a
toystore. So at the time it wasn't such a hard decission to
get rid of my NES.

But now I'd really like to play it again. I bet I'd choke up
with nostalgia if I saw the sprite flicker in Super Mario
Bros 3 :-p

That said... I can already play most of my favourite
NES-titles. Super Mario All Stars covers the mario bros
series. Metroid is avaiable through Metroid Prime. And both
zelda's are on the zelda bonus-disc. Getting an actual nes
would really be pretty only for nostalgia.

Mmm... I spent alot of time with the very first Teenage
Mutant Hero Turtles game too. That game was rockhard as
well. I actually doubt if I could bring myself to complete
it again. I remember after like level 4 or something things
got REALLY hard. So I usually spend at least an hour
replaying parts of level 4 over and over to stock up on
lives and pizza. That took alot of patience... but if I
didn't do it I wouldn't stand a chance in the later
levels... those were most definitely the days :-)

Ooh and double dragon 2... oh man, the memories are really
starting to come back now :-p I MUST get one!

I actually only played the one on that screenshot. I don't
think any other parts of the series were ever released in
europe. At least I never heard of any before.

"the diabolical placement of enemies when you're
platforming!
"

YES!
Oh god... that was so frustrating! I used to scream and
curse alot when playing that game! :-p

Jump on ledge... immediately jump back to previous ledge to
avoid enemy... throw ninja star to kill enemy... jump back
to the ledge. Haha... you really had to memorize that stuff
or you didn't stand a chance.

I don't have any other nextGen-console besides the Gamecube,
so no sadly I haven't played the new Ninja Gaiden. If I
would ever buy another console it would probably be a PS2
anyway so I can play Final Fantasy. So unless it stops being
xbox-exclusive I don't think I'll ever play it :-/

I'm actually the highest bidder on a nes on ebay now :-)
Only 13 minutes to go...

Goosebumps!
That was one great game. It was also the first game I ever
played where you were able to cling to walls and get sort of
a wall-jump-thing going. Though I'm sure that was probably
possible in some other game before it.

I won the nes-auction btw. :-)
It comes with 2 controllers and a zapper. The famous mario
bros/duckhunt cartridge. Castlevania (i actually never

I wish the guy would email me back though. I already mailed

lots of positive feedback so it should be alright.

"Rad Racer came with 3d glasses and if you hit select

yeah i heard that. I just love that kind of stuff. I'm
really curious how that 3D mode actually looks. Is the
3D-effect good? I have a virtual boy, and even though there
aren't any really good games for it, I still think the
3D-effects are amazing. I hope it'll compare to that :-)

Now I have to start looking for more nes-games :-p
Mario Bros 2 & 3 are essential. Some megaman-games probably.
Double Dragon2. Ninja Gaiden (which I remembered today was

The 3D effect on Rad Racer doesn't work, at least it never
did for me when I had it. You press Select, the screen goes
all green/red wobbly, and put your glasses on and...
nothing.

It was a great game though. I spent hours on it. I
think the music was good too, although I may be horribly
wrong...

Hm... that doesn't sound very promising. What a shame. I was
hoping I'd see some early experiments in virtual reality or
something :-p Oh well. Atleast 2 out of 3 persons seem to
think the game itself is very good. I can't wait to find
out!
