Yeah, some of them are good people, so long as: a) You know them and b) They aren't tanked up on drink or drugs. I don't really know how to articulate it without sounding condescending towards them, but there is something nice about the "simpleness" of them, the way you can see their feelings are blunt and honest. Almost like you would admire the single0mindedness of a predatory animal. I suppose it makes it nicer when they're friendly towards you or do something nice/helpful as you know there is no ulterior motive or manipulation in their actions (because when there is, they usually mask it so poorly that it's blatant). The main things I dislike about them are: their lack of discipline and self control; inability to use any foresight (such as to see the consequences of their actions) and the way they have no social conscience. The latter two points in particular as it means that they do things like: start fights for no reason, engage in what I'd class as "serious" vandalism (not just tagging walls/breaking beer bottles), fighting, stupid opportunistic petty theft, etc. |

For whats it worth I tend to avoid them. I understand what you say about knowing them. The truth is that these kinds of youth have got completely out of control and make people's lives a misery. The Police simply don't come down hard enough on them and deal with them so they get the message. Most of them as you've indicated a very slow and in my experience can hardly string a sentence together. In reality its partly due to lack of discipline at School etc etc and no focus in life etc, that is why these youths don't know the boundaries and thats why they're testing people all the time. Britain is faced with a serious problem with a lot of these youths and their anti-social behaviour. |

as much as i agree with a lot of this, and am very grateful to have it pointed out to me that britain suffers from a similar phenomena as we do in north america (though, decidedly british in certain aspects which is cool...)... there is a fine line between making fun of imbeciles and perpetuating racial stereotypes by saying that any white person who likes hip hop is not allowed to dress the part... i haven't really seen a ton of that in this thread, but in particular that "wiggers" site seemed to just take random pictures of whites and asians whose dress is influenced by black culture--and condemn them for it... which is really stupid, and attempts to enforce boundaries that we should have gotten past by now... is it that they are non-black that makes them stupid looking or is it just that their style doesn't appeal to us? i've seen a lot of black people (both in the media and in person) who look just as ridiculous wearing a visor upside down and to the side and it doesn't make them look slick by any means... i don't accuse anyone here of preaching anything hateful--still i'm weary of it all the same |

Yeah, the attitude isn't "hip hop" at all, even if the dress sense resembles it. It's about being a mouthy little shit, trying to pick fights and acting as if your beat up Nova is a Ferrari. Talking of Chavs, I went out to get a chinese takeaway for tea and my normal one was closed. I ended up driving around a rough bit of town looking for another one. A group of three chavs in their late teens with a girl were standing in the edge of the road, one of whom was swinging a baseball bat in a fairly menacing manner. He wasn't far enough into the road to make me go right into the oncoming lane, but enough to have to move. Instead of slowing down, or going around him I just kept on doing about 15mph and just drove towards him and stared him down. He stepped out of the way. Had he hit my car I'd of been out in a flash with my crook lock and ruined his shit. We're (particularly in Britain) always taught to be non-confrontational with these sort of people and to just ignore them/get out of their way, but I disagree. If you reckon you can take them, you should stand up to them. It's the fact that most people are such pussies and let them intimidate them that makes these kids think they're tough shit. If "normal people" didn't take crap from them and even gave them a kicking from time to time, they might grow up a bit faster. You can go off on a sociological tip about it not being their fault; they're a product of society/whatever, but that's nonsense. A lot of them come from decent homes, even if they are poor and there are plenty of kids from more impoverished backgrounds than them that are reasonably behaved. What riles me most about them is the fact that they probably do intimidate most people and even make people reluctant to go to certain bits of town. |
