Yes, this board is far superior to any I have encountered.

Obviously you have no idea how CSS style
switching is done, otherwise you wouldn't have made such a
remark - the backend of this board has nothing to
do with that ability - alternate colour schemes (skins if
you will) could easily be provided via some minimal PHP and
JavaScript (something this board uses) where the user could
select an alternate "skin" and the whole board's look and
feel can change, and PHP could be used to set a cookie to
retain the user's preference (or it could be built into the
member functions on the board back end).

HOWEVER, since there is presentational markup inside the
HTML that is generated when the board displays, it CANNOT be
done easily via the methods I just outlined.

As a matter of fact, if all the presentational markup was
removed from the generated HTML, it would cut down on Phob's
bandwidth costs since the CSS files are cached by the user's
browser - the only thing that would be loading repeatedly
would be changed avatars and the text, which does not take
up much compared with the graphics.

People want to attack me on this board just because I am who
I am, rather than take an honest suggestion/opinion and
respond intelligently to it without resorting to attacks
(even Phob is guilty of this).

And franky, ecnadniarb, you haven't obviously come across
too many forum software packages then - there are a lot of
boards (both free and commercial) that are better (from a
factual view) than this one. I'm not slighting Tune's work
here, he did a good job of modifying an existing board into
one that serves this community well.

I'd just wish you lot would listen and not respond
with hostility every time I make a post - after all, isn't
that what a messageboard/discussion forum is for?

Actually Joyrex I was a lead programmer on the XMB message
board for over a year, I was also involved in the backend
design and implentation of the control panel for the web
host which has just been voted the best consumer web host in
the UK in the Future Publishing awards. I was also involved
in the design and implementation of one of the UK's largest
retailers ecommerce systems. I have probably forgotton more
about web technologies than you will ever know, which is
some going seeing as I don't forget much.

So maybe in future it would pay to know something about the
people you are attempting to put down.

Anyway Joyrex, to summerise, there is a WORLD of difference
between knowing how to piss about with other peoples hard
work and being able to do it yourself.

when people dont get on well after so many years ... maybe
its better to keep some distances

for what I see phob wont like advices from joyrex and
neither joy will like phob giving him advice

both lead the best electronic music resources I know, but
sadly they wont ever come to any kind of agreement or good
relationship

but you know, important things in life like friends, family,
health... are far more important than some opinions about
internet issues

From what I see Joyrex doesn't give advice, he has shitty
little digs at the board and then gets offended when he gets
negative reaction.

Really? I considered using XMB at one point, but the lack of
features and waiting endlessly for version 1.7 to finally
come out made me look elsewhere (Ikonboard -->
Invisionboard). Are they even still around? That Richard guy
(the lead programmer) was pretty nice, but the icons (which
oddly enough are similar to Goon's Family Glue CD artwork)
always creeped me out :) You should help Phob and crew out,
as you'd be an invaluable resource with all your knowledge
and experience.

Your evangelistic views on this board kinda puzzle me - why
would someone who comes from helping code a forum software
like XMB be so against features (useful ones like an edit
button - I can see people's points about emoticons and other
non-essential forum extras)?

Which control panel? I love CPanel, and I'd like to see what
the one on yours is like... please post a link.

I wasn't trying to put you down, just make a point about
assuming something can be done without understanding how
such a process could or would work - I had no idea you were
a coder, but even that doesn't exactly mean that you're up
on CSS, semantic XHTML, etc. Some coders specialize in
certain areas of application design and tend to stay away
from the presentational aspect.

I don't get your last statement - who said I was pissing
about with anything? I never said Tune was either, quite the
opposite in fact.

You really shouldn't have come off so hostile and assumed
that I didn't know anything about how the backend of this
board works - because I wasn't saying I did in the first
place.

Nacmat: I can't ever recall Phob making a contsructive
comment or suggestion to me or my site ever in the years
I've been doing this - quite the opposite in fact. My
suggestions are just that - suggestions - you take them as
'digs' because of who I am - if I was anybody else, you
would have responded differently. I frankly don't know why I
waste my time making them, but it's obvious some people
around here would like features added, and I am just
agreeing or adding to their suggestions.

1. at least one thing joyrex said is true:

reactions to his posts are based on who is he, more than on
what he says

2. joyrex has over 1000 posts here, in which he has always
helped people with questions or doubts.
sure that sometimes hes been involved in some discussion,
but that is normal taking point 1 into consideration.

3. I ve seen joyrex´s posts praising phobs and tunes good
job (many times)

4. for points 2 and 3 I think joyrex is a very nice member
of this Mb even though he is the administrator of the
"oponent" MB.

5. in my opinon both joyrex and phob are in the same level
guilty on how both communities´ relationship is

Yep Richards OK (doesn't know a thing about PHP though), it
was better before he took it over, I left at the time Magic
Lantern was released.

My comment about the backend was meaning nobody other than
Tune and Phobia knows it, so how can you make statements
about what would be and wouldnt be easily possible. I based
my comment from looking at the source and the uniform
layout.

As for most forums packages they cater to a generic market
and try to encompass everything. The reason I like this
board so much is because it does as much as it needs to do.
OK certain things like the search function could be improved
upon and there are other little flaws which I am sure the
crew here will sort out in the future, but in general I find
the board a pleasure to use.

not to be mean, but what's it to you?

they're just these two guys who started up a site each and
they don't like eachother. just because they run sites which
a lot of people visit, doesn't mean they should behave in
some kind of more than neutral way.

in the end it's their thing, it has little to nothing to do
with you.

What was the point in getting involved at this stage of the
thread? You just seem to be Joyrexs personal fan club these
days.

Take a look at Joyrexs last 50 posts, other than about 5
posts they are either talking about why WATMM is/was down or
having a dig at this board (This topic / the SPD one / the
Gallery one)...hardly "joyrex has over 1000 posts here, in
which he has always helped people with questions or doubts."

i quite like kylies corset.

but to the point: don't change the board too much. keep it
simple. no-one would benefit from edit-functions on here, as
they most likely would be abused (you can't argue with that.
you know you will abuse it!). Giving everyone the
possibility to post images, though... that would be nice.

I've said before: the EDIT-button wouldn't work on

ok. never mind about the images, but align:justify on the

it. The board will still be nice and clean (maybe even
cleaner). Also: the "instant reply" box could be a little
bit wider or bigger. You have to scroll after only 6 lines.

a "check post length" button that, as opposite to "Preview"
doesn't bring you to an empty page, but only has an alert
which says "your post is too long" or "your post is ok." You
can see if your post is too long, and has to be split.

alternately, the Preview could not bring you to a new page
(which is bad because you may be replying to something, and
then you'll loose track in the middle, and you'll need to
look back to what you were replying to..), but just post the
preview under the instant reply-field...

Oh, yeah - I see what you mean - For some reason, I though I
had to click "reply" to go to a posting screen, then post a
message (ala my board before the Quick Reply feature was
implemented). Sorry, I get a bit scatter-brained at times
:)

So, really, the only thing you added was increased the size
of the post window and added the character counter. Either
way, it's a good improvement.
