You guys are making it sound like a bunch of old cock. I
thought it was a cracking martial arts spectacle. Nothing
more, nothing less. What is the matrix? £4.50 or £3.00
with concessions.

after reading more boards on theories about the matrix plot,
it asks more questions than it answers, fucking awsome if
you ask me

or we could be reading into it too much?
either way i dont think i've been so engrossed by a film
plot since akira or bladerunner

true,

and even if people hate it, rarely has an action film
prompted such an abundance of philosophical debates aside
from the first Matrix and Bladerunner. Of course there are
a few more (terminator series comes to mind) but
action/eyecandy films that present these kinds of issues
exceedingly rare.

it was more, you should watch it again.
just like The Big Lebowski, it is a movie that is
entertaining on many levels.

i think you could also read it as having to do with
humans. here's my walter benjamin/postmodern inspired
reading:

1. the matrix determines how we see/experience things .. and
so, I think it could be read as a metaphor to
unconscious/societal forces that determine the way we see
things. [eg. post-structuralism/post-modernism] ie. we are
always already in a matrix (as was hinted towards the end,
with Neo stopping those things or whatever).

2a. morpheus' speech in the cave (evoking images of early
christians) ... especially concerning the retroactive
statement: ie. that the answer lies in the past not
the future, suggests, that to counter the matrix is through
the past and not by replacing it with another

2b. ...whilst at the same time (though not contrary to this
point) evoking a messianic picture of the future ... ie. us
humans can not realise this ... only the "one" can. its not
about proving that there is a messiah, or realising the
messianism/reality that will deliver us -> it is about the
hope that we can.

3. ... thus at the same time, this belief acknowledges the
limitations - the fallen nature of human kind - and thus
there is the temptation to ignore this (eg. the kiss
scene?). hence the antagonism between morpheus, and the
general ... who in a sense was just fighting for
an-other matrix. (assuming the role of the "one" ...
ie. illegitimately).

4. this point is perhaps also highlighted by that speech
between neo, and that old guy on the bridge, about the
reciprocal nature between man and machine ...
(subject/society ??) ... so whilst the matrix seems quite
obviously concerned with robots and ai. it could also
function as a (loose) metaphor of the classic
proletariat/bourgeois distinction, where the human race this
time is the proletariat (however ... it would differ from
the marxist notion of revolution/liberation, b/c only the
"one" can cause the revolution, ie. a man made
revolution, just spawns another proletariat/bourgeoi

s dichotomy.

doesn't add up in a few places, but its quite a nice way of
looking at it methinks. (arguably, due to the whole anomaly
spiel - one can not have a "proper" understanding of it ..
ie. there will always be an anomaly in an interpretation
...) .. bla bla .. might get some shut eye now.

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-05-30 06:34 [#00720780]

though at the same time, i just thought there is quite a
cool more biologically based thought .. ie. the whole
symbiotic relationship between man and machine ... man and
resource (ecosystem/environment).

matrix is like a virus ... all about maintaining homeostasis
... something like that .. ie can't eliminate resources, as
we are dependent on them .. just as it is self defeating for
the resources to devoure us?? though the virus thing might
be a bit ofa red herring in this sketch ...

offline grinningcat from london (United Kingdom) on 2003-05-30 06:37 [#00720781]

my analysis:

1. matrix is a shit film of eye candy, anyone looking for
answers to the universe in it or making it out to be
something that it is not (i.e. a great philosophical
mindfuck) is stupid.

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-05-30 06:42 [#00720785]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

grinningcat: take that shit elsewhere.

yes it was cheesy/corny - but that was to be expected. don't
think anyone is debating that.

not looking for any answers ... at least not any conclusive
ones. nothing wrong with a bit of philosophical banter. and
no, we don't need the matrix to carry out
philosophical discussions, but that doesn't mean that we
shouldn't or can't!

I loved the movie, I must say. I don't really care about
the 7000000 critics who wouldn't have liked it no matter
what the movie did. Assholes.

But I do agree that it had a pure SHIT soundtrack.
Horrible.

I thought it was pretty crappy. I will probably buy the dvd
to see if I enjoy it in my favourite medium, but I don't
think it's a classic by any stretch (but then, name 5
sequels that are, not including the Godfather). Awful
opening, repetitive action sequences, terrible
dialogue/acting... need I go on? Or am I an asshole for
thinking it was a badly edited mess? Toss.

why does everyone get so up in arms about this movie?

We didnt have huge bashing threads for movies like Something
Monk (that one with chao yung fat) THAT looked like a shit
movie.

Why dont people go on about that?

I think some people are just so anti mainstream, that they
decided they hate the matrix because it got so popular. The
matrix isnt a miracle movie, but its good. Decent at LEAST.

So why all this hardcore hating?

Well I can only speak for myself, but I thought the first
one was great and the second one was poor. That's why I
bashed it, cause at the moment it seems like an unfortunate
and ill-advised follow up.

yes, I didnt mean to sound so broad with my remark.

Sure, people may just not like it... but I DO kind of feel
this vibe that people hate the matrix cause its so
mainstream now.

So, I wasnt refering to everyone.

And yes, I personally beleive the 3rd one will make it all
click.

:-\

thats too bad man...

thats what kinda ruined the new starwars for me (aside from
they dont compare to the originals)... the fact that I was
saturated with it. I mean, I somewhat enjoy them... but at
the time it was like, this is too much.

gary oldman is cool.

the matrix is not needed for philosophical
discussions. It is just fun to try and figure out what is
going on in the film. It's a puzzle that is fun to try and
solve. The Wachowski brothers (the directors) are extremely
well read and therefore have made many references to their
philosophical readings in the movies. So it follows that
making philisophical parallels is the best way to try and
solve this puzzle.

Also, keep in mind that this movie is really just the first
half of one large sequal. If it felt incomplete, that's
because it is. Fortunately, Warner Brothers is not making
us wait another 2 years to see the conclusion.

of course, I assume that all of you who say how much you
hated this movie won't be going to see the 3rd right? we
shall see...

I loved matrix:reloaded, even though there were some things
that bothered me. First of all, they used slo-mo on the
other characters and that kinda lessened the impact of Neo's
bullet-time which we saw just too little of. The slow-mo
looks cool, but a bit too closely looking like as if trinity
and morpheus now had bullet-time as well. I dreaded when I
saw Paul Oakenfold in the listing and that was confirmed by
the ultra-lame rave scene and the ending sucked big time,
especially when it showed "to be concluded" /:S
But since reloaded and revolutions are meant to be in fact
one big movie, and not two seperate parts it's a forgivable
feat. Other than that I came home very satisfied and ready
for more.

bullet time is just the name of the special effect. the 3d
slo-mo quick pan stuff.

hhmm, yeah I forgot about that, it does have lots of slo-mo
but still neo and the agents were the only bulletdodgers. I
guess I expected more where that came from in reloaded.
Still I'm far from disappointed, that 98 agent smith scene
was pretty lush.
Evolume, ok yeah I called it bullet-time because of max
payne, didn't know the proper word for it :P.

I think the opening scene was supposed to be edited messy as
it was a dream neo had. But I agree that it kinda had me
going like "wtf" too in the beginning. I liked what I seeing
but couldn't make 2 and 2 connect . But later it all made
sense.I loved that part when she lands in that cool stance
as her bike rips that building to shreds. Then I had a
deja-vu to star wars:the phantom menace, the long and boring
hassle and tassle with the council 'n stuff.

actually,
i think part of the reason that there is not too much
('course how much is too much right?) saturation of matrix
propaganda on tv and the like in the States is due to the
MPAA rules. Rated R movies cannot even be marketed in
places where underage kids will be exposed to it. i.e.
television before 9:00 p.m. ; during saturday morning
cartoons; on the backs of cereal boxes; leaflets in Sesame
Street Magazine; uh.. high school football games..?

the movie sucks like hell, just came back.

zion was horrible, not like i imagined it. the movie was
more star trek or star wars style (just look at the captains
outfits). morpheus speakin to the crowd was almost gandalf
style. the party in zion was so crap that i wanted to leave
the cinema. neo fuckin trinity ? what the fuck was that....

in the first part there where no parts, where human where
computer-animated. all slow motions where made with wires
etc. now the effects were all made on the pc. neo figthing a
hundred smith's, flying like superman etc. etc. etc. that
isn't very professional... no oscar for special effects
that's for sure.

and the buggering "to be continued" ... christ what did
they think of ?

(and something nice for the end: have you realised that
nobody, NOBODY lost his eyglasses during fight ? wicked :)

watching Reloaded, all those effects may be expensive, but
they're being used so fucking cheaply it just makes me want

I just saw it and really enjoyed it.

I always thought no1 was always better when they were inside
the Matrix, so it was a bit disappointing seeing so much
stuff in the future/the real world in Reloaded.

I also thought that the effects weren't up to scratch, but
as I said, I still enjoyed it.
