Can I do a 1 min piece too?

20 mins. long or something, that would be something

Yay!

2min!

How about, nothing longer then two mins.

People can be as creative as they want, 30 seconds, or
whatever.... I think it would be kinda boring if all of the
takes were each 2 mins long you know?

eh?

Someone should set up a page with a basic faq or something,
or some general info you know? or maybe not, I am allready
working on my little take

Yay!

okay, I'm in on this.. and if I could, I'd like to help
organize this chaos a bit. I also have a good amount of hd
space and the right programs to sequence this entire thing.

Here's how this should work:

As a way of securing a sense of continuity in this .. piece,
whoever's turn it is to complete the next part of the
sequence should hear the previous two parts in their
entirety. This will make the finished product seem more
cohesive, not a mess cosisting of one tangent after the
next. Also, hearing the work of one or two people ahead of
you gives you the chance to elaborate on something you feel
they tapped into but did not fully develop.

It might also be a good idea to have a constant element in
the mix that whoever sequences this can envelop in and out
of the mix at the very end.. then again, maybe not. I think
there needs to be something that strings this whole thing
together. If not something that unifies the entire piece,
(that may be a little too restricting) at least something
that gives each piece in a given series a little binding
similarity. One piece should flow/stem from the next, it
cant be a driving, textured melody for one minute, and
static w/ reversed speech for the next two.

Everyone, when called upon, should complete a piece that is
anywhere from 30-120 seconds in length that serves as a
segue as well as a step in a new direction, or a development
of an idea or theme recently introduced.

You should make two copies of this file.
One should be an mp3 with a 160 bps. the second should be a
small file of shitty quality for the next person to hear.

Once the sequence is completed , and before the mixdown,
anyone who wants to attempt to string everything together
should request to do so, so we can hear varying takes on
this magnum opus.
for example there could be mine, then say "Track Title
(neeta mix)" or (Dolleater mix).. then we can vote to decide
which one should be used, or we could put multiple mixes out
there.. I dont know...

let's set February 1st as the date

offline theo himself from +- on 2003-01-27 15:18 [#00530569]

[they shortened my message...]

let's set February 1st as the date after which the signup
list will be locked, and no more people will be allowed to
enter. this way we can have a finalized list of people
involved and begin to create an order of operations so to
speak. email me to get your name added to the list before
the 1st (include Xltronic Music Massacre or something like
that in the subject)

once whoever's going to set this thing off is chosen
(arbitrarily? ..I'm not sure how this should be done) s/he
will have 3days to a week to complete this overture. once
completed s/he should send 2 copies to me (or just the
160bps one, the lesser quality version should be sent either
to me to forward to the next person, or to that next person
directly. the next person in the sequence needs to hear the
previous two pieces, so it might be better to send them to
me.)

the next person in line should have the same amt. of time (
I think 3 days is good enough? .. it's only 2 mins long
so...) to complete the next part of the sequence.. the
sooner the better; we could have this thing knocked out by
the end of february.

alright, that's it.. let me know what you think of this ,..
my email address is scnj2082@hotmail.com.. I'll make a
continually updated list of all participants up until the
end of january..
let me know.

so so... i see that you're really intersted... but i have to
add some things...
this will never work in one month !! 3 days each mix in one
month lasts for 10 people !! 20 minutes ?? not much...

no voting for mixes !! everyone gets his unique part... even
when it's shitty it will be used...

making it one powerful piece ?? this will be hard. i think
that besides sending the next one his track, the two should
talk a bit about used programs, samples, for example two
users of floops won't have any problems...

constant element ?? this will be hard...

offline theo himself from +- on 2003-01-27 15:47 [#00530605]
Points: 3348 Status: Regular

not really, if one wants to continue or develop an idea they
liked from a previous part, they should...other than that
people can pretty much do what they want, as long as they
keep the bigger picture in mind. otherwise it'll be a
complete mess..

as far as the timeframe is concerned, there's no way of
telling how quickly this can be done, once everyone is
signed up we can tho..

what do u think of the 3 day limit?

offline sadist from the dark side of the moon on 2003-01-27 15:56 [#00530619]

of course the tracks must have something similar, this can't
be chaos, but you said something "a constant element in
the mix that whoever sequences this can envelop in and out
of the mix at the very end.."

this seems for me like you're speeking bout a repeated thing
through the whole mix... this will not work

three day limit is hard, but for someone who is interested
with the idea will make it...

i'm just afraid we won't get enough people for this. 20
would be cool, maybe we could ask phobs about some publicity
??

haha....you guys sound EXACTLY like the soulseek kids doing
this. i mean, dead on. every idea, post, everything. pretty
soon youll be having an xltronic records or something

its cool though, i had a fun time with the one minute
massacre. though i was way in the beginning (second track, i
believe), it was cool hearing progressions of how it was
done.

all in all, it was fun. i just bullshitted my mix during
supper though. still fun :)

the publicity thing is a good idea...

as far as that constant thing, I dont mean a certain melody
or rhythm or anything quite that restricting, but rather a
sound, an ambient sort of backing noise.. I don't really
know how good of an idea that is anyway

We've established the basic rules, I say we hand out some
numbers and get this thing going. We probably already have
enough for 30 minutes.

If not, people can still join while it's being worked on -
they'll just be given the next number in line.

one more thing.. your contribution should not be rigidly
limited by a 2 minute time limit.. if need be, u can extend
it a few seconds or so, ykno.. so an echo or something can
fade out completely... nothing nearing the 2.5-3 minute mark
tho...

Lets all just remember that this was dolleaters idea...

and I dont like some of the things being suggested...

"let's set February 1st as the date after which the signup
list will be locked"

and the whole voting idea.... thats just going to be too
much, and too much to deal with and keep track of

Everybody should be able to contribute whatever they want.
And it doesnt all have to flow, it can go however the next
person in line decides it should go

Lets just have one general rule that: anyone can make
anything under 2 mins. and when we have a list of which
people are following after who, with email adresses and
contact info and what not, so that the person who made
his/her snippit, can send it to the next guy/gal, and so
that they can send eachother a small snippit of the audio
via email (maybe 10-40 seconds worth?), and converse if need
be.

Thats all that really needs to be set in place as far as
rules go for this IMO, anything more then that is just going
to make this impossible and greatly hinder the progress.

Lets just work on a list of who is going to follow after
who, Dolleater, if your going to be the man in charge of all
this, get a list going

I mean, who exactly in charge? eh?

If Dolleater is not going to be, then I vote for Pomme De
Terre

I agree with everything Mickey Mouse said.

I think the rules should be as loosely structured as
possible. If you can come up with a creative way to segway
into your track from the last, then great.. if not, no big
deal. Everyone that participates will have thier 2 minutes
to shine.

listen, it would be much easier if there was an interlocutor
between the creator of part (x) and part (x+1) because
someone needs to compile this whole thing, and it would be
much easier if that person had the files as they are
completed, rather than just all at once.

I don't think there should be a vote deciding anything..
that was just a suggestion should there be more than one
mix, and only one planned to be "released"

finally, if u don't set a deadline for this, it could be an
ongoing thing that may not be completed within a reasonable
timeframe... we don't want a perpetual string of "me too!"s
hindering this lil project's completion...
believe me, I can make this a lot easier.. I'm not trying to
count anyone out here

You had some great ideas there Theo but I dont think you
understand the whole creation process that makes this fun.
Its going to be a progressive project. Its going to be
worked on from one person to the next. Changing the track
orders would defy the original idea. This isnt a dj set. Its
a progressive musical collaboration. most of the fun will
be in the transitioning from one track to the other.

I don't know how the soulseek one turned out.. was it pretty
good? I see what you're saying but isnt there a risk of
turning this project into an aimless, tangential thing?
anyway, enough playing executive producer; I wouldn't want
to stifle ur fun here, kids

I think the different mix idea should be done

Regardless if its tangent, Im going to have fun making this,
especially hearing how my peice incorporated itself. I think
you want to make a sort of dj set, am I right?

This is a Music Massacre! Its a progressive mutation of
xltronica.

no not really a dj set, but more of a collaborative effort
between many different artists where one person's
contribution can affect how another person's turns out etc
etc. like the butterfly's wing causing a monsoon. hah

I don't see how my ideas take the fun out of it though.. u
can still do whatever u want, but hearing earlier
contributions would kind of serve as a veritable "you are
here --->" marker so that your piece won't sound COMPLETELy
out of place

we should do what soulseek did too and release it , lets go
for ours.. once it's done we should see if they'll sell it
under the soulseek label .. eh?
