ok, so the church tells you NOT to use contraceptives under
punishment of enternal damnation...
you listen and follow..
now you have aids

(keep in mind that you are uneducated, illiterate (so u cant
read the bible for urself), and living in poverty)

how is that NOT the churches fault?!?!

aminal: i dont know why you're being so mean and spiteful,
it's really not cool

if anyone tells you to do anything it's up to you whether or
not you want to do it.

there are thousands who come out of povert and oppression
and just want some peace and quiet -- not revenge

but honestly -- those problems were all brought upon twisted
views of christianity - fit to the needs of a central
governing power that demanded 150% control over their people

i never said anything about revenge....

im just saying that a church has a HUGE responsibility when
it is the only source of education, and it tells a bunch of
illiterate, uneducated people what to think and do.....

...of course they'll listen, the church is the main
authority in their life!

the catholic church (or any orginization in that position of
power) betrayed taht responisbility when it tells them to
do something stupid..

sometimes the church itself IS that power

not in our society, where the church and state have been
seperated... and religion has little real power these days

but in other countries, and here in the past

well, surely humans had morals before religion, right? i
mean, what led to the establishment of religion in the 1st
place? (rhetorical qu.)

this discussion has progressed, not to a point where anyone
can claim an idea for reform, but maybe it would get there.

Actually, someone asked for the definition of religion.
Originiality is a bit hard to prove, but I would suggest
that this point of view has not been raised as such.

I prefer to be argued based on what I originially provided
as a thesis. Otherwise the discussion gets lost easily in
people's connotation of a judeo-christian dictionary

fine, lets talk about ur original thesis:

"religion should be about compassion and love, not hatred
and shit like that"
(pretty loose translation)

all i was saying is that thats what religion is to YOU
its something different to ancient mayans who sacrificed
people to gods.....

whos to say ur right?

i agree, ur way is much nicer and i would prefer it..
but dont think theres such a things as THE CORRECT belief..

Reading through this topic is putting me to sleep...
religion has always been a non factor in my mind, I'm my OWN
God... it always bores me to tears to hear people argue on
about it. It's such a hot topic, and yet I'm so
disinterested... :-)

It's up there with golf... as soon as I hear the words
''religion'' or ''golf'', anything like that, I just start
snoring.

with that - all "holy war" is - is just humans disagreeing
with eachother - and not because of religion

religion may have influenced them to do it but there isnt a
religion on the planet that says "go kill people"

I don't believe in the time I have been here that anyone has
raised the validity of religion compared to social trends.

More simply, I don't know of a thread started by a person of
faith that screams to know why religion has gone so far down
hill and isn't about the virtures on which it was founded.

Ophecks, no offense, but religion has been one of the most
important factors in shaping the world as it is today. I
guess history is boring, but even you must get sucked into
provacative stories of wars or conquests of the past? I
think also people can get into the ideaology of religion,
wonder why it isn't that way anymore, and possible seek to
reform it. I just find it hard to see it as such a drawl
topic as you do.

hahaha, marlowe, have you heard the George Carlin comedy bit
about that?

He basicaly suggests the same thing, turn golfcourses into
land for homes for the homeless. Great bit, hilarious, d/l
if you can.

I totally agree with you.

There's nothing bad about religion, or talking about it, and
I know it's important...

But like Sido said, I just wanted to talk about myself! :-/
ME ME ME!!! Or something...

I guess my religious upbringing has turned me against it.
Always being forced by my mom to go every Sunday... blarg.

yeah, forced fire and brimstone religion isn't healthy, way
to negative, i do believe that teaching in a positive and
honest manner is much more able to convey all the teachings
of all religions.

Maybe that's just me though.

mean that as a dig)
