do not move the xbox 360 when a cd/dvd is turning inside it,
there's a fabrication flaw and you would destroy your cd/dvd
!!!

I'm so happy for you glasseater, a recent survey suggests
that the common wank pleasure is increased by 3.07% when the
wankee is within a 3 meter radius of an Xbox 360.

My mum's buying me one for Xmas, yay!

how are the so called next generation graphics then?

only reviews I've seen about the 360 as of yet say that the
graphics just as easily could've been ps2.. of course, this
only goes for the first of the games which naturally don't
know how to use the engines or whatever properly, but.. how
does it look and play?

I lost interest in Game Consoles years ago, but I saw a game
on demonstration today through, which did look fantastic.
It was a first person shooter called Call of Duty 2, which
might encourage me to fork out in the new year. The trouble
is I'll rarely have the time or feel bothered enough to play
on it, except at weekends.

From all accounts, Kameo or Condemned or Call of Duty
running in big screen 1080i glory is a sight to behold. Most
def next gen.

Not that I'd know, Microsoft still hasn't shipped any 360s
to my island out here floating in the Atlantic. Any day now.
Just have to keep telling myself that. Any day now.

I'm more excited about playing Splinter Cell, Halo, Ninja
Gaiden, GTA etc in HD than I am about the new games!

the things I read just said that while most of the games
just looked like ps2 graphics, the rest of them looked like
everything was covered in goo... thinking back to the walls
and ground on halo (+2), that could very well be correct, as
everything there seemed to have some sort of goo-ish
reflection on it...

not my words.. trained 3d-graphics people (which is why they
got the invitation to test the machines for free), actually,
so I kind of think I'll trust them...

or rather the magazine you read... what was it, something
norwegian no doubt? norwegian gaming press is horrible.
actually, most gaming press in general is horrible. i got
call of duty 2 and condemned, and i'm positive none of these
games could be done on "current gen" hardware. they run at
stable, smooth framerates and utilize a ton of new hardware
features that look great. there's a bit of "plastic action
man" feel to the characters in cod2, but that's a graphical
bottleneck we'll continue to see for a little while in
character design. it'll pass, though. already gotten better
from far cry, where people really looked like dolls.

Oh they're most definitely wrong or have a dubious agenda.
Unless there's another system called the PS2 that is not
related at all to the Playstation 2.

eh.. most of them work in 3d-graphics with creating
different things (everything from visualisations of housing
projects through movie cg to games (those funcom people are
there somewhere)).. one of them was actually a writer
for something now that you mention it, but I don't know
what...

well, after playing games since 1990, i think i'm qualified
to speak about graphics as well, and this stuff could not
have been done on a ps2 at all. and this is just a scrawny
start on top of that, they're utilizing like 10-25% of the
hardware so far. and it already looks brilliant.

I'd probably trust you more on gameplay reviews than them,
though... most of them are really silly about stuff like
that, but they know graphics...

They can't possibly be talking from a technical perspective,
because that would make less than zero sense. It's just
objectively incorrect, full stop. But I do think there are
PS2 games that can compete with Xbox 360 games visually in
an ARTISTIC sense. Perfect Dark pushes billions of polygons
and runs in 1920 x 1080 widescreen resolution but still
looks cheesy compared to, say, Silent Hill 3 running in 640
x 480 with jaggies up the wazoo.

why wouldn't i be just as discerning about graphics? anyway,
ophecks knows what i'm talking about. shadow of the colossus
on the ps2 is MILES better artistically than PDZ.

Points: 35867 Status: Lurker | Followup to Ophecks: #01797894 | Show recordbag

well, that's just the thing. though the games may have a
higher resolution, they still just looked like ps2-games,
apparently.

so that would be the same as saying "oh, a television image
doesn't look as good as this game; it's got such a low
resolution."

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2005-12-10 16:54 [#01797903]

well, there is kind of a difference between just having
played games, and actually studying and making them... even
though I've listened to lots of music, would you trust me
over some studio-technician if I said "this album is
incredibly well mastered" and he said "fuck no!" ?

offline staz on 2005-12-10 16:56 [#01797906]
Points: 9844 Status: Regular | Followup to Drunken Mastah: #01797901

it's not just that, the polycount is way higher than what
the ps2 can handle, the mapping techniques are way more
advanced, the lighting is more advanced, the shadowing
techniques are more advanced... and this is just single
thread software. there's five more available. i think the
only game that looks current gen save for the resolution is
amped (some number). that game just looks vile.

if those guys really mean that the games look exactly like a
ps2 games, they have no idea what they're talking about.
technically, that's spouting ridiculous bullshit.

also, you're kinda arguing on the behalf of some other
people here, so i don't know how much sincerity and accuracy
you're portraying. which is why this whole part of the
discussion is pretty limited and just kinda retarded.

i've programmed for quite a while, i've built maps since
doom and i know several graphics engines pretty well. i know
i'm not game developer type of material, but i think i'm
pretty qualified to speak about it in more than a purely
superficial manner. i know a little more about the gears
that make the mechanism. also, it's just banal to compare it
to ps2 graphics. it's evidently idiotic by any dimwit's
standards.

If they don't like what the Xbox 360 games look like, it has
nothing to do with the Xbox 360 itself. Clearly it's capable
of spitting out truly NEXT-GEN visuals. Anybody who states
otherwise is not being reasonable or objective. What do they
think is ''good graphics''? F.E.A.R? That's about as high
end as it gets and the 360 could run that game with ease,
try doing that on a PS2.

But they're free to dislike the art-styles and
presentations. That's an issue that has nothing to do with
the 360's capabilities. Perfect Dark may have inept artistic
direction, but the game is most certainly ''next gen'' no
matter how you slice it. For better or worse.
