well, yes, I'm arguing on their behalf, but I've also seen
screenshots for myself, and they seemed to be correct.. that
game you talked about wasn't ps2 graphics, but it seemed to
have that gooey effect they mentioned.. I think it's just
the lighting engine on however, screenshots are usually
awfully small, hence my initial question, which now has
panned out into yet another one of these neverending
threads... I wonder why that always happens...

it's probably my fault anyway, but let's discuss stuff and
shit and stuff.

they mean that the games just don't look too different in
graphics from the ps2 games yet. the console will probably
come around (though one of them who's a bit tech-savvy noted
that the 360 isn't much more powerful than the computers of
today, so...)

anyway, I'll probably get to see it first hand soon...
however, I will most likely hold out for the ps3.. mgs 4...
mmmm... hopefully there will also be more silent hill and
final fantasy...

and I love it.

heh.. I played FEAR, and besides from the game actually not
being scary at all (too many fucking enemies: when will they
learn that the scary parts are the ones without
enemies?!?!), I didn't think much of the graphics.. and that
wasn't on my computer which is more geared towards music,
but on my roomates', and he's what one could call a "gamer"
or whatever, so his comp is up to specs (don't ask me what
specs are, though, as I have NO idea.. there would be too
much information if I asked him...)

hihi, map building is fun.. I remember me and a mate used to
create the most devious maps ever on wolfenstein 3d (DOORS!
DOORS!) and Duke Nukem 3d!

i'm getting the ps3 once it's a bit cheaper, cause i'm
fearing the launch price will be STEEP! i really want new
mgs, ff, dmc, god of war, ico blabla... also, it will play
bluray and i'm sort of a technophile idiot that buys really
expensive gear that will be outdated before i've managed to
plug it in the socket.

anyway, the 360 runs 3 cores at 3.2ghz, so it's well under a
lot of computers around today. thing is, it's far above 99%
of personal computers, and it will be for at least a year.
also, when writing software for consoles, you've got to
remember that the developer only has one spec in mind. this
way he can custom tailor the game's engine a LOT more,
enabling him to optimize performance by several hundreds of
percents vs something that has to work for thousands of
different configurations of hardware and software (PC). it's
a spectacular advantage.

Yeah, I can't wait for those games. PS3 have more games with
the ''artistic'' flair the first wave of Xbox 360 games are
lacking. Xbox tends to get a lot of boring looking/playing
Doom/Quake-ish games and FPS'.

Off topic a little, is anybody else concerned about what the
new Grand Theft Auto games are going to be like? If they're
too realistic looking, that would be weird... it would kind
of cross that uncanny valley... beating up hookers and
running over old women is fun when they look cartoony, but
might be sort of unsettling in a photorealistic city.

it will only be more awesome. i hope you can run over 2 year
olds, beat up kittens and cram shovels down the throats of
endangered animals after setting them on fire and pissing
all over them.

hmm.. I wish pc games too would utilize multiple cores..
then my computer would probably out-spec the other guys'...
he only has one core, and I got 2x 2,8 ghz... I wouldn't
know what to play, though...

how's the gameplay for that condemned game? does it actually
scare you, or is it another like FEAR or those damned
Resident Evil thingies where you just get swamped in enemies
and don't have time to be scared?

Condemned is supposed to be ten times scarier than FEAR.
It's my most wanted 360 game. I've read spoilers and there
are some truly terrifying sequences.

Staz- haha, maybe you're right. I hope they add a Rape
Button. I think I'd like driving car bombs into playgrounds,
too.

yeah, isn't mgs4 one of the first games? I kind of predict
it won't be surpassed neither in gameplay nor graphics
before the next MGS after that again.. or.. maybe at silent
hill 5? konami knows what the fuck they're doing... square
also has a shot at it, but they're also quite often more
into making amazing pre-rendered stuff (and when the normal
stuff looks pre-rendered, imagine what pre-rendered stuff
will look like!)

GTA will probably just carry on like it's always done... and
that realistic looking stuff... well, there was some
reasearch done on it, and people confronted with, like,
real-looking 3drenders of people thought they were looking
at pictures of dead people and were generally creeped out..
apparently, that stuff with "windows to the soul" or
whatever must have some sort of truth to it... so if
rockstar knows what's good for them, they'll just keep it a
bit cartoonish, and let silent hill use real-looking
graphics to creep people out...

And yeah Condemned is much slower paced. Psychos sneak up on
you in the dark and whisper ''now you're going to die'' in
your ear, and you only have a pipe to fend them off with.
Groovy.

mistake...

FEAR wasn't scary at all. i thought resident evil was pretty
scary to be honest, mostly because of the ambience. i've
only played the gamecube remake of RE1 though. brilliant
game.

condemned is... sickening. i'm totally off my rocker after
playing for 2-3 minutes. an hour of gameplay is like being
sent to a religious asylum and being subjected to regular
acid trips and flagellation. a friend of mine was howling
just watching me play for a while. i've got a 5.1 system
that enhances the scariness tenfold. the graphics are
amazing, the way the game utilizes darkness is just
brilliant. nothing like doom 3 where the world is just
soaked in INK. this is a true survival horror game without
cheap "sinister the ring-like girl" gimmicks, just crazy
fucking hobos, a totally absurd plot and combat that really
feels heavy and realistic. you rip signs off the wall to
defend yourself, find almost emptied-out .45s in thrashcans
that last you for one more crazy adversary and desperately
try to fend off the next attack with some shitty conduit you
just yanked off a power box. it's a triumph in survival
horror design, every aspect is damn near perfect. the only
thing i miss is more freedom, but that would probably work
against the fabric of the gameplay and ruin the
"tightness".

oh, and it's permanently locked to the first person view,
which is pretty fancy. especially when you fall down an
escalator.

Have you guys ever played Resident Evil 4? Sounds like you
haven't. I think it's arguably the best game ever made,
don't be turned off if you didn't like the older ones, RE4
is a reinvention. Great ambience and incredibly kinetic
action.

Man I can't wait to play Condemned. Shit.

RE1 was scary (remake undoubtedly more so). 10/10
RE2 was less scary and more action-packed. 9/10
RE3 was not scary at all, and focused on action. 8/10
RE4 I haven't played. :(

SH1 was WOW 10/10
SH2 was next-gen WOWWOW 10/10
SH3 was more of the same 8/10
SH4 I haven't played :(

(fear of fours?)

I haven't tried F.E.A.R. or Condemned, but as far as
disturbing games go (not necessarily jump-out-of-your-seat
scary), I'd include classics like the Doom trilogy, an old
point-and-click called Sanitarium, Gabriel Knight 2 and even
the not-so-scary Shadow of Memories for PS2.

Best scary games I've never played: F.E.A.R.,
Phantasmagoria, RE4, SH4, Clock Tower (1-3), Fatal Frame...

Would you rather have an xbox 360 with no games for 600$ or
whatever it's going for or a used xbox with maybe 10 games
for like 130$ (a system which had plenty of time to have
occasional gems made for it)? Do the mizath. Unless you're
rich, then who cares. There aren't any later generation
games better than super street fighter 2 on genesis anyway.
Super bomberman on genesis is a fun game I've been playing
lately too. I'd have to say genesis is a better system than
snes. Super mario was a let down; nothing compared to mario
3; too easy with annoying "helpful" text tips that pop up
meant for the complete newbie or child. Lame extra paths
that are annoying rather than fun to find. Stupid 'fill in
all the green blocks' switches. All games have to be team
efforts on these new systems since they're so complex.
Groups rarely produce interesting stuff. It just becomes
statistically less likely that all members are
interesting/creative as more are added. If you stuck aphex
in a band with 3 other electronic music makers, the result
would suck more than his unique stuff.

who the hell would buy a fucking 360 with no games? that's a
pretty absurd question. anyway, i know it's convenient to be
stuck with nostalgia, but very rarely are the games you
fondly remember playing when you were younger any good these
days. there are some notable exceptions, though. also,
"groups rarely produce interesting stuff" is probably the
biggest load of shite i've ever heard, as there's always a
group involved in creating games for a company. most of the
time it springs out from the idea of one man (shigeru
miyamoto, hideo kojima, cliffyb, whatever), but there's
always a team there to flesh things out. the entire team
doesn't design the game.

urgh, all they do is mimick OUR world. It's like someone
tediously figures out the technology/code to do something
spectacular in its own right, like making light reflect off
surfaces etc., but then this is memetically used over and
over again. The games are all cookie cutter clones of some
character wandering around in a 3d environment with slight
variation. 2d puts a natural limit on the complexity,
everything happens in a geometric plane. With current
generation, there's so much complex ai/ 3d etc that you can
almost always find some lame loophole to make the entire
game challengeless. I think most games need to be way more
digital, like checkers: everything is done confined to the
squares. Then again doom2 was pretty analogue. I bet I'd
rather have a copy of doom2 than the xbox 360 and every game
that will ever be made for it. I might as well post this
piece of utter crap to justify writing it.

groups produce interesting stuff. but art doesn't work in
groups generally. Not really unique art from the rare really
strange wack job like aphex. All final products have an aura
of "conventional" stamped on them, in varying degrees.

i've played plenty of new 2d games, and a lot of them are
quite good. especially kirby and meteos for the ds. it all
boils down to what you like (as usual, sigh). but i don't
think limiting your opportunities is a good approach to
making original and fresh games. also, there aren't many
games out there who are looks over substance. most of the
really good looking games also have great gameplay. also, i
haven't really been able to find any loopholes in 3d games
at all, unless they're obvious game glitches/bugs. and if
you do that, you're just cheating anyway, and that's never
fun, is it? i think you're being a bit conservative and
narrow minded about 3d gameplay and its possibilities here,
but whatever. it's pointless to try and "convince" you, i
just figured i'd say some shit on the internet.

well I don't think groups really produce art, and I think if
you look at how game studios operate, a compartmentalized
system relegates individual tasks to individual artists with
the specific knowledge that individual people will produce
unique results.

There's character design, monster design, event design, map
design, animation design, menu design, music design,
dialogue design --- all relegated to smaller segments,
headed by individuals, and ultimately even the power of
these micro-groups stems from the individual designers
themselves, given a specific framework for creativity.

And btw, i find your comments on mario misguided, but no
bother commenting further.

Oh, and you're right about 3d games having loopholes --
nearly every single 3rd person game I've played has glitches
which enable "easy kill" or "problem bypass". But 2d games
had these just as well: I'm thinking most notably some
ridiculous sprite bosses from sonic or streets of rage.

RE4 won game of the year at the Spike TV video game awards
last night. Spike TV! With that victory, Capcom has finally
reached the summit of video games.

Drunken- yeah the Xbox 360 is backwards compatible, though
not right out of the box... you need to download software to
get each game working. Easy to do and well worth it though
since every game is re-rendered in widescreen and high def.

PS3 will be backwards compatible, will probably provide the
same sort of benefits, but dunno if it'll work the same way.
