I don't know if the guy is dead yet, but can I say that i
admire him greatly. Not because of his football - i couldn't
give a shit about that. It's more his lifestyle. Shagged
fucking miss worlds by the dozen, taken loads of shit and
had a fucking great time. Good on ya besty!

it was a curse for him though.

Who else was it ... oh, i can't remember his name, in the
Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band... oooh, can't remember, big drinker,
he said if he had his money back from what he'd spent on
booze, he'd spend it all on booze. Can't blame him...
however he was...

George Best: The Final Days - Screenplay by Ceri JC aged 23
and 3/4.

"...So Georgie, here's another liver. Now this is
really the last one, we're getting into trouble with
the organ donor people now."

"'course doc, I'm a changed man. I'll treat this one good"

5 Mins later.

"Oh Geroge, you've gone and thrashed it already."

"Sorry doc, you know how it is!"

Canned laughter. Fade to black.

Lets look at it properly.

Plenty of people die each day because of alcoholism. Just
because this bloke kicked a bit of leather round a field a
few years ago we've got constant updates on his hospital
condition. Why should we care more about him than any other
person in the some condition who we've never met. It's a
shitter that people die but that's life. George Best just
sped up the process on himself.

As usual, Giginger is bang on the money.

I can't see Bestie dying for a few days yet, he'll want one
last 3 day bender and now the pubs are open, he can go out
with a pint of meths at the end of a constant 72 hour sesh
in a pub.

Let's be honest, if people are homeless or have a hard life,
you can feel a great deal of sympathy for them when they
succumb to alcoholism. When they're minted celebrities and
they just lack self control and over-indulge in the
pleasures of the flesh, it's not as if they didn't bring it
on themselves.

Well, seeing as I used to be a stage 2, bordering on 3
alcoholic in my late teenage years, it's not as though it's
something I've not got experience of. Even at that age, I
managed to overcome it, myself, without recourse to
counselling, support networks, etc. by making the simple
decision of going cold turkey for 3 months and then only
gradually returning to drinking and in greatly decreased
amounts (which, by and large, I've stuck to ever since). I
can see how someone whose life is already shitty might have
difficulty in deciding to and having the willpower to give
it up. However, someone like a pro footballer who has a lot
to live for and obviously a fair whack of willpower (no one
is a world class athlete without some degree of self
control), shouldn't be so weak. Yes, you can bang on about
it being a 'disease', but having "been there, done that" I
can honestly say, no it's not, it's a matter of willpower
and self control.

Nice to see you have no sympathy for me, as that makes you
worse, as aside from being without sympathy, you're also
criticising me for the same thing, making you a hypocrite
too.
