i started w/ Rest Proof Clockwork and the single Undoneson. try Undoneson cause its cheap. if you like that then go all out. as for Spokes, than may not be the best place to start. anywhere else is pretty good.
actually i started w/ The Black Dog: Spanners, but that counts in a different way.

i'd say double figure - it's what i started with - i think of double figure as their best, but that is really my opinion, its got about 19 tracks on it, so it should keep you busy for a couple of weeks. its got this kind of metallic warm synthy sound to it, its much more sythetic sounding than their other stuff - then move wherever you want.

I always recommend to start with the first release. That way you grow along with the artist and the way they envolved.
In this case it's difficult to draw a line because as you probably know Plaid started their career as The Black Dog.
If you fell in love with a track you heard by Plaid then you should start with their first releases, Undoneson/Not for Threes and so on.
Check this for their complete discography.
If you never heard much of them I recommend you to start with their first Black Dog release and follow the timeline.

spokes is an amazing release. trainer is for the story, some very good (if not classic) moments but really old school and dated.

Handley / Turner produced their best work when Downie was with them, and vice versa. Surely this is an indisputable fact?

i am afraid i don't really agree. the best elements of the the black dog went when handley and turner left. You only have to listen to spokes to realise that. Pure magic!

You're not completely wrong. Handley and Turner were obviously the technical and melodic force in the early BDP, but Downie provided the magic - the mystical, esoteric vibe, the Asian and African sounds, which were a perfect complement to Plaid's Ancient/Modern clash. That sense of "ritual", for want of a better word, has been completely missing from everything Plaid have done since, and it suffers for it.
That's why, despite its hi-tech production, Spokes is nothing compared to Bytes.
Downie hasn't had a great time of it since the split, but I much preferred "Music For Adverts" to "Not For Threes". I didn't bother listening to Plaid for years after that stinker came out.

"the mystical, esoteric vibe, the Asian and African sounds" - if you want such thing just go and listen to Enigma, dude ! or ComradeF.
saying that Spokes is shit because it's not similar to Black Dog music is the most stupid thing i've read here.
there is Black Dog and Plaid, fucking appreciate that !
----------------------------------------------------------- --
p.s. many people who make music and struggle to create something original [ i mean structures ] can appreciate Spokes.
p.s.2 if you like p-brane it's strange you don't like spokes.
