The rave experience

I must say that Warp/Rephlex/Planet-Mu etc. raves here in
London have been perfect. The people are always polite,
nobody cares how you dance (or if you attempt to dance but
look like an utter cock) and there's no feeling of needing
to be "cool" or "fashionable"...if you get me. It's simply
about enjoying the music.

In contrast, I've been to drum'n'bass events (and some other
festivals) and it's completely different-you feel more
pressured and less confident to simply enjoying yourself.
Infact, the last thing at fabric was full of chavs who gave
me and my friends weird looks.

Anyone know what I mean?

err yeah, although I can honestly say that I've never felt
self concious in a club, maybe it's the drugs.

the reason I don't enjoy drum n bass clubs as much as I
might are the bloody mcs and rewinds.

Yes, sadly DnB gigs seem to be less and less friendly. I
know DnB has always been seen as the more edgy, violent side
of electronic music, but I must admit a lot of recent nights
I've been at were full of filthy chavsters. It wasn't until
I went to a DnB night at a small venue up in Scotland and
everyone was so nice (it was just like a warp
night/atp/etc.) that I realised what asses a lot of the DnB
crowd are.

Don't get me wrong, I love DnB and IMO it's some of the best
club music. Just that a lot of people into it need to remove
the stick from their colons ;-)

i know perfectly well what you mean..i never go to any
techno, drumnbass, house, trance, ..raves because i don't
like those people..electronica scene is something completly
different though, people there are always awesome!

Yes, a hell of a lot of DnB MCs are gash. Even when they're
good it doesn't add a lot for me.

Once I was out on Boxing day and the mc wouldn't shut up
about "working off that Xmas turkey", to say it spoilt it
would be an understatement.

I wonder why DnB sometimes attracts a really unfriendly
crowd while electronica doesn't? I've yet to go to an
electronica gig where there's been any trouble or
unfriendlyness at all.

I wonder what a garage event is like! Anyone been to a So
Solid Crew gig or anything like that?

I have been to some electronica gigs that had a heavy
"industry" presence where the atmosphere could be construed
as a little snobbish though not exactly unfriendly.

squarepusher in dublin drew the aggressive types... moslty
cos he didn't come on for 40 minutes. i thought it was a
hoot.

but generally... electronica is always cool. Electro gigs i
think are THE friendliest... the cheeze seems to appease!

Neve experienced snobbery.

Although even that would be better then theatening looking
teens who look like they want to bash your lights out for
being remotely different.

I've been to both.. you never know what you are gonna get I
guess. I think it might depend on what types of drugs are
being supplied.

This was going back quite a few years, I think the "elitist"
element of electronica isn't as apparant as it once was.
And of course snobbery is always prefereable to the threat
of violence, which unfortunately seems to prevail in many
London venues, I try to avoid "normal" pubs and clubs
whenever I can to be honest.

I quit going to events a few years ago specifically for this
reason
everyone who is their is only looking for a fuck, and all I
want to do is listen to music and dance like a fool
people don't like that...
"it's just not like it was back in the day"

offline Dannn_ from United Kingdom on 2005-02-22 09:15 [#01507707]

Yeah electronica gigs are always fun cause the people are in
a better mindset. Where else would you trade a joint for a
turn with the head massager?

I don't really understand why people are so different at
drum & bass nights because you definetly have to dance like
a retard to drum & bass, but people still try to look cool.
If other people aren't going for it then I can't.

The difference is whether people come because they like the
music or because they need something to do. You wouldn't get
many people who come out of the pub and think 'maybe we
should check out that electronica gig'; people there are
mostly people who are big into the scene. And the people at
proper raves are even better, usually you have to make quite
an effort to get there so everyone just wants to have a good
time.

You're talking about normal pubs and clubs specifically
here, right? I'd agree with you there.

But the raves I enjoy (of electronica) are still about the
music and having fun, which is why I like them.

Yeah, My Girlfriend is German and whenever I go to a bar
over there I feel completely at ease (even in Dresden where
there is a bit of an anti-British Vibe), but when she visits
me it's a completely different story, I'd never take her to
my "local" put it that way, the beer sucks over here too:).

offline CS2x from London (United Kingdom) on 2005-02-22 09:21 [#01507724]

I totally agree.

It was shocking how much more friendly bars/clubs and stuff
were when I went to Hungary (btw, there's some wicked
Hungarian artists that need to be checked out!)

I'm looking forward to the next event at Electrowerkz.

I also took some foreign girl friends (1 German, 1 Israeli)
to Turnmills and they were less than impressed, spending
most of the time complaining about everything from the way
they were treated to the "wack" music.
And to be honest I was inclined to agree with them.

The Glade is the benchmark for everything everywhere

Anyone who went last year will know exactly what I mean, it
was such a happy place to be

To be honest these days I much prefer staying in and
listening to music with friends than going out, the sound is
normally better, you can smoke what and when you like, you
don't need to qeue for ages to take a piss and you can
listen to whatever you want.

Front Room clubs are the way forward.

guess I didn't buy a ticket until April last year anyway

i went to turnmills the weekend before last...

it was shithouse

the music was quite quiet for some reason, not to mentioned
boring and repetitive.

it was nice that the place had a few seats around, but the
actual dancing areas were tiny and err, stupid.

we arrived there at 3am, only went to turnmills because
there was still a fucking massive queue going around the
corner at fabric.

and regarding the treatment...yeah the staff there are
cuntish, i've seen that mentioned before and they were
fucking unfriendly when we got there too.

Yeah I mostly stick to the scheduled act nights. I like the
feeling of going to a snares gig or whatever and just
blending in and talkin to fans, this kind of stuff attracts
people really into music. And you're right about the not
caring thing... despite IDM being snobby as fuck, noone
gives a shit about what you're wearing. My favourite venue
always has the biggest range of punks, cyber goths, trendies
and those who can't be arsed, and its great.

Can't wait for autechre. That should be an interesting vibe.
I've got a feeling everyone will look the same though.

unconventional jackets. 20 something. Subtle but stylish
black rimmed glasses. Very white. Warp t shirts maybe?
