I use to download films all the time. I stopped for a
while, but now it sounds like this bit torrent thing can get
me going again. I am just looking for DivX's of the latest
in-theater movies.. no fakes.. I use to use KazaA but I am
remotely queued for days before something starts to d/l at
2.4k... THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY!

Can someone be so kind as to set aside a few minutes and
breifly tell me how to get started on bit torrent?

Install Azureus.

Try these sites for torrents:

torrentspy
torrentreactor
bi-torrent (surpnova mirror)

eMule is old, and quite shit.

I use a program called shareaza to D/L from the
torrentlinks I got from torrent sites. I works decently, fast
enuff 4 me, but I'm sure there are better ways!

I participate in the Digital Archive Project which uses edonky and I
can't have emule because of some settings wankery. Can't be
arsed to change settings back and fourth all the time as I'm
thoroughly up DAP's ass..

you need to put your upload speed a few kb under the max to
maximize the download (with edonkey too i believe)

yeah, get azureus, then you gotta find .torrent files
(usually through webpages such as the ones horsefactory
linked) to begin downloading.

you upload to other users as you dowload. the more people
are involved in dowloading a file, the faster it goes
(usually). it helps if there are lots of people who have
the complete file (seeders).

it's really not all that complicated once you get going.

offline epohs from )C: on 2005-01-24 19:30 [#01475379]
Points: 17620 Status: Lurker

a .torrent file is really just a small file that tells your
client (azureus in this case) what you're trying to get. it
is not the actual file or files, it's just like the address
to the files. you get peices of the files from other users
who've downloaded them already.

just a few days before the whole thing implodes because of a
combined MPAA/RIAA bust!

the hardest thing for me to get used to was that you don't
use the actual client to search for torrents.

it can also be the most annoying thing - where to find
torrents. each site seems to have it's own speciality.

a few more sites, besides the ones mentioned by Sam:

hypertorrent
lokitorrent

a special one is delirium-vault.com which specialises in hard to
find, cultlike stuff. they only take new people on
invitation though and normally I could invite you, but
they've completely closed for the time being because they
got warnings from the MPAA too (or at least something like
it). they only now take torrents that do not come up in some
form of MPAA-index. still a great site though.

Yeah, I'm actually pretty wary about using bit torrent a lot
for piracy type stuff right now. I pretty much only use it
for porn nowadays.

I think it's only a matter of time before the suits roll out
their massive lists of IPs that they've been collecting.

qrter, remember when you gave me an invite to delirum-vault
like 27 seconds before they shut down and my login/signup
failed, and now i can never ever get in?

that was cool.

really? that sucks. :(

I asked about the closure about a week ago on the forum -
they will be opening again in a while, they said.

I found both Far Side cartoons at delirium, whole series of
Dr. Who, whole series of Louis Theroux, they've got all
kinds of arthouse cinema there, lots of asian cinema.

they used to have a lot of comics for download, audiobooks,
etc.

that's the hard thing with downloading on the internet -
you'll have a hard time to find anything older than 6 to 12
months.

beyond that it's almost impossible.

which is another reason why something like delirium-vault is
a gem. I got the complete series of "Police Squad!" from
there.

still no openings. although there are new members - I guess
the mods can get people in.

before there was an automatic script that you could use to
invite people - they say that it will be back, but with more
restrictions.

I'll let you know when I can get you in again.
