I only ever understood intellectual property in a very
limited sense anyway

its so fucking stupid, if you use a sample and destroy it or
alter it much from its original form there should never be
an issue...when you sample underpressure by david bowie and
queen and try to pass it off as your own...thats just stupid
and wrong and you deserve to be analorded from your bank
account.

They usually start to after they get sued.

You might even get sued by Vanilla Ice for ripping off his
idea of sampling Under Pressure!

So.. legally, where do you think the line should be drawn
for sampling?

offline r40f from qrters tea party on 2005-01-20 14:34 [#01468792]

i think that sampling should be legal. it's the audio
equivalent of collage. i sample music all the time - it's
great.

on the other hand, i do see where taking the main riff from
a song outright and using it in a big pop hit succe$$ gets a
bit iffy. where do you draw the line? i don't really know.
it's a pretty ambiguous realm to begin with. but there is
a huge difference between what vanilla ice did and what
negativland, v/vm, and plu do. i don't like the way it's
set up now.

If you make money on anything that is another persons
interlectual property you stand a very good chance of
getting royaly shafted....

You have been warned....

if you keep to small runs the larger companies most probably
won't bother to do anything about it.

for example - both "criminal" 12"s on Planet Mu came out in
runs of 2000 copies each (if I'm not mistaken) and there
were no consequences. it would've probably cost more to sue
Paradinas than what he actually could've coughed up.

right as i was turning my tv off just now a commercial came
on and the voiceover said maybe it was expected that the
boy would learn about the meat business from his dad..
,
and i turned the tv off right then.

i kinda laughed to myself.

that's the end of my story.

It is pretty stupid. I forget the specifics, but when I
studied copyright law in the UK, I came across an
interesting fact: When it was originated, copyright was
actually to protect the consumer's interests and not
those of the publishers. Something to do with publishing
houses acting as cartels with popular works...

any copyright law on the planet."
