is great.

or he was (he died in 1999). his music still is great.

been listening to an anthology of his musics from the 70s to
the 90s and what impresses me most how he mixes all these
influences, always making it sound organic, never forced or
spliced together.

info at allmusic

the official moondog site

in the late nineties he developed a love for Viking
history.

his look is even more amazing if you take in account that he
was blind from the age of 16 (which he was in 1932).

I think you'd like this.

it doesn't sound that weird, that's the thing. the
uniqueness is more insidious. it kind of creeps up on you.

i see.. you think 'the music of moon dog' would be a nice
starting album?

I haven't heard enough to give any real recommendations
except the anthology I've been listening to, which is called
"The German Years - 1977-1999" and came out a few months ago
(on Roofmusic), I think.

it's one cd with a compilation and a cd with his last ever
concert in 1999.

I can share it for you, but I can't rip it at the moment, as
my cd-drive is (still) broken.

I wanted to put up a snippet of music as an example, but I
can't even do that.

I could rip it tomorrow, though.

actually the samples on the site are very accessible and
quite cute/endearing.

that would be really cool since there very little i can find
on slsk...maybe you could only rip couple of songs you like
the most or something..if it's that good im going to buy me
a copy (if i can find it that is).

my brother gave it to me for christmas and he works in a
pretty regular cd-store, so it shouldn't be that hard to
find, seeing as it's new.

this is the one

it's just some happy instrumental stuff, strong on beat, but
neither greatly innovative nor skillful in any way, so
that's why I wanted to hear the new stuff.. the snippets ARE
charming however, like I said.

a small update - I've ripped the cd's, I'll be sharing them
later on tonight. :)

also made a mistake in the viking-story - he moved to New
York in 1943 - it was then that gave himself the Viking
outfit.

he disappeared from the streets of Manhattan somewhere in
the sixties and also dumped the outfit..

i went to a record shop today to see if i could find it, but
in the middle of browsing i had to leave coz some people
can't do shit without me, but unless it's in the
jazz/audiophile section they don't have that record.

An email my girlfriend just forwarded me from her father
(she was inquiring about Moondog).

I would assume Jason has more musical and biographical
info about Moondog (Louis Thomas Hardin) than I do. He was
at one time taken pretty seriously by both jazz and
classical people. He was, without argument, a phenomenon
unto himself.
I saw Moondog one time. I was in New York hanging out
with the great drummer Roy Brooks. We went to hear Yusef
Lateef at the Blue Cornet in Brooklyn. Roy went crazy and
had to be restrained (not that unusual) so I rode back to
Manhattan with Yusef's bass player Herman Wright (also from
Detroit). Our goal was some church in the Bronx which had a
huge pipe organ and did Sunday morning concerts (which we
eventually reached). Enroute through Harlem we stopped to
see and hear Moondog, who was on the roof of an apartment
building in full Viking regalia doing his thing. It was an
unusual day musically.
Apart from our stop in Harlem, Herman was very proud
because we maintained a steady 33 mph and hit all the street
lights green the whole north-south length of Manhattan.

Yusef Lateef is also great. Nothing at all like Moondog
mind you - just good jazz with eastern influences.

some of the madrigals are truly beautiful. he had a
wonderful ear for quirky melodies.
