Moondog

Indeed. He's like a team of oompaloompas programming video
game music with radiohead on in the background.

well that was what I was thinking too, yes.

and there's no extra crap to muddle up the music - sure,
there's an extraordinary story behind the individual but the
music somehow seems very honest.

but I guess that's more or less in my head.

ordered "moondog 2" just now. :)

My final verdict: charming and refreshing, but not
brilliant, and not really even that great. thanks though!
I would have loved to have seen him in NYC (way way way back
when before I was present).

man, he's probably my favourite artist at the moment.
totally mindblowing stuff this. although this 'the viking of
6th avenue' is a bit different to other stuff i've heard
from him..much more up to my likings. it's incredibly good.
what a guy! i'll definitelly check him out properly, i hope
i can find some bigger text about him too, really interested
in this guy.

haha, part of reviw;

Sometimes it's almost jazz, mostly it's that rare thing in
music: unique. Moondog was a creature of an entirely lost
New York. Giuliani would no doubt have had him moved on.

He is one of my favorites too. The odes to Benny Goodman and
Charlie Parker are both awesome - Symphonique #6 (Good For
Goodie) and Bird's Lament.

His liner notes are cool too, he uses visual analogies for
song structure which is awesome, especially for a blind guy.
It's all fantastic stuff really.

awesome, though I feel it may be one of those things that is
funny for a while and then dies. I'll have to check more
complete samples to be sure, though.

yeah, I think I need more complete samples

would you say this is easy to come by? In that case, I'd be
able to download some stuff, and if I liked it, I would buy
it...

it kind of comes and goes.

there's quite a lot of stuff to be found, but then there's
also a considerable amount of albums that are OOP. those are
mostly the newer stuff, though.

OOP?

anyway, I will look for this, as it caught my initial
interest, but sampels aren't the best indicator of good
stuf... are you sharing anything, and could you if so
recommend "the best?"

hey is there a moondog track on the big lebowski
soundtrack?

specifically "stamping ground" ?

i do like that track.

offline evolume from seattle (United States) on 2005-11-17 18:29 [#01780959]
Points: 10965 Status: Regular

so i've been downloading a bit. the first track i got was
"stamping ground" which i recognized from the Big Lebowski
soundtrack (if it is the same moondog..?)

then the next track i got was "birds lament" which i
recognize from a Mr. Scruff track. a track i liked.

so i guess i liked moondog and didn't even know it.

"stamping ground" is certainly a moondog track, as is
"bird's lament".

Steven.

OOP = out of print.

I'm not sharing any moondog, no, but that new compilation
seems nice, the one Goran mentions - "the viking of 6th
avenue".

also nice is the 2-disc set that came out end of last year,
called "The German years 1977-1999", which focuses more on
later stuff. that one is also packaged rather nicely.

uh oh sorry. yeah, definitelly check out the viking of the
6th avenue. it's a compilation so you'll get a wider outlook
on his music. it's quite minimalistic though but i think you
like that sort of thing..i'll contact you one of these
days..i shall rip the album!

it's odd he was dressing like a viking since he was blind
for the bigger part of his life..

and this sounds.. well, I'll look for the album in the
shelves. this was recently released somehow, so it shouldn't
be too hard to track down?

it's kind of like a cross between some of tom waits' stuff
and that ry cooder album.. chavez ravine or something...
even though chavez ravine reminds me of tom waits.. this
sounds like it's somewhere in between in a place where
there's less sound all over...

sort of yeah..it's a bit more simple perhaps which is not
neccessarily a bad thing ofcourse :)

and yes, i think you shouldn't have trouble getting this as
it was released not long ago.

those first samples I heard sounded a bit more silly than
these, though.. it was from a different album, though...

well.. I was wrong (or rather, the samples were wrong. I am
never wrong). This is quite enjoyable, and I can tell
from the entire listening experience (the viking of sixth
avenue, btw) that it will stay and stick and all that.

haha!

yeah.. I bet you can imagine how many things I got stuck to
my walls after each time goran visits... I don't mind,
though...
