[UK] Bonfire Night Disasters

We went to a big display in town last night, at the beach,
it was great. We then went back to my house for some more
fireworks, we had loads. Things went fine until the last
rocket was lit. The rocket got stuck in its launch tube,
and it was a massive rocket. The rocket exploded in the
garden, we all turned and ran. It was so big, I felt the
heat of the explosion on my back, and felt burning bits
falling on me. The noise of the whooshing rocket that was
stuck was tremendous, and the explosion was deafing.

Luckily no one was hurt, and a fun time was had by all.

Anyone else got any fireworks stories to tell?

This is the last I saw of the rocket, before I turned and
ran! You can see it blasting on the floor as it was jammed!

You didn't touch them after they went out did you?

Remember they used to show those adverts on TV about people
being hurt on Fireworks Night? I haven't seen any for a
while. I remember when I was in school, wondering who in my
class would come in mamed, or fucked up hidiously. Luckily
nothing ever happened, fortunately!

not really, like i said mostly a campfire thing

but some universities, i guess, have these huge bonfires,
then they get out of control, someone gets killed by the
fire, then lawsuits and so on......

people will NEVER learn

offline elusive from detroit (United States) on 2004-11-06 17:57 [#01386167]

nah no tradition,

more like cleaning up the yard, trimming shit, have tons of
old timber and wood,so you put it in a big pile and burn
it.

but it usually makes sense to throw a party because campfire
parties are great and why waste all that burnin wood :)

keeps thedrinkers warm well into the night

In 1605, Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators attempted to
blow up the Houses of Parliament. But as the group worked on
the plot, it became clear that some innocent people would be
hurt or killed in the attack. Some of the plotters started
having second thoughts. One of the group members even sent
an anonymous letter warning his friend, Lord Monteagle, to
stay away from the Parliament on November 5th. Was the
letter real? The warning letter reached the King, and the
King's forces made plans to stop the conspirators. Guy
Fawkes, who was in the cellar of the parliament with the 36
barrels of gunpowder when the authorities stormed it in the
early hours of November 5th, was caught, tortured and
executed.

"Remember, remember the fifth of November.
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.
I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot."

This poetic little rhyme, still popular amoung children
today, continues to remind us why, on the night of November
5th, bonfires surmounted by cloth manikins or "Guys" are set
alight in every town and village in Britain amongst a blaze
of celebratory fireworks!

Redrum: Is that so? I did not know that. What is the
significance? Is it to do with buring witches as heretics?

It has soo many paralells with the great xltronic (imagined)
plot of 2004, with ecnadniarb as Fawkes and the other
characters pretty obvious.

If you were a normal user it would be sufficient behaviour
for this situation but as a moderator you are expected to
display a level of understanding that exceeds making replies
by cutting and pasting text from sites that are probably
aimed at children.

blowing up fireworks on the 5th of November.

My friend just told me about a bonfire night disaster that
he had that is quite similar to your own, Jedi Chris! A guy
he knew (let's call him Gareth) was visiting him for the
night, and he'd brought with him his huge rocket which my
friend planned to erect and set off later in the evening
when the conditions were just right. Things went awry,
however, just after my friend finally got to have a look at
Gareth's rocket. It was really big and thick with a red tip,
and he couldn't decide wether to pay attention to the base
or the crown. When he slid the rocket into the tube that he
had prepared shortly beforehand, it started shaking and he
too realised that it was stuck, even though it was ready to
go off! Gareth's massive rocket exploded and my friend tried
to retreat but it sprayed hot arcs from its tip all over his
friend's back. It was so big, he felt the heat of the
explosion on his back, and felt burning bits falling on him.
The explosion shocked Gareth and the noise he made was
deafing.

Luckily no one was hurt, and a fun time was had by all.

i like it when you erect your rocket yourself, fire it up
and it takes longer than you expect. the sparks are
shooting out but it's just not firing like you expected.
man, when it finally goes, the sense of satisfaction is
amazing.

it's especially cool when all your friends are around, and
you just know they're as excited as you are.
