The Orb

Anyone here fans? I've only just discovered the orb, had to
after seeing Jah Wobble live (he did bass on a few of their
tracks, he's amazing).
I bought a best of album, and I love it :D I'd heard the
track little fluffy clouds years and years before, and
finding out just recently what it was was great.
I'd advise anyone to listen to the track Perpetual Dawn
(Solar Youth mix), it's reggae that one, but it's fantastic.
Maybe you'd prefer a more ambient/dub track like Blue Room,
but everyone must've heard that.

Ah well I love the orb mainly because it's unashamedly happy
and uplifting! How ambient should be imo. I know you
probably call them ambient or whatever now, but I would say
their earlier stuff was! I really did prefer this material,
before they decided to replace lovely synths with something
resembling an electronic fingernails-down-blackboard
machine. Draft 7.30 was utter cock. I'm not saying I dont
also love a bit of dark now and again, but for that I look
to your squarepushers and your aphex twins...

download cos I'm cheap) adventures beyond the ultraworld,
its got a lot of praise here.

I agree with the lobster, orbus terrarum is a real classic.
Parts of pomme fritz are great too. Their sound is like the
perfect mixture of technology and nature. Utopia

I love the Orb! My favourites: 1. Orbus Terrarum, 2.
Orblivion, 3. U.F.Orb, 4. Live 93, 5. The Orb's Adventures
Beyond The Ultraworld
and a lot of the remixes they made. The sounds are so
organic and weird - espacially if you have taken LSD or some
mushrooms =)
I´ve seen them live on the Orbilivion Tour - this was the
best sound I have ever heard - really 3D soundscapes!!!

the arpeggio in "little fluffy clouds" is sampled from
"electric counterpoint" by steve reich (it's actually
arranged for guitar and played by pat metheny).

:D when I saw jah wobble play that live, he was playing
around with that bassline, adding different endings to it
and different rhythms, really cool stuff. And at the end
with the distorted part, he kept on putting the amp up till
he broke it!

We played out the whole Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld
yesterday on the way down to the city. i liked it even more
than usual and with a car full of girls i found out how
ignorable it was, but they liked it too. They were like fuck
Tori Amos - put something else in. i knew what i had to do.

i do think Orbus Terrarum is their genius moment. and then
of course The Dream just came out in the US on San Fran's
Six Degrees, which i haven't heard yet

designed, swirly, fluffy ambient album of all time.!! with
the sound of the crowd too...so nice.!! (its like the happy
still living cousin of lifeforms )

pomme fritz = is whackky mad sunny fluffy you dont know orb
till you hear it. it even smells of sunshine. :)

listening to live 93 from my discman at the very sunrise,
about 4am, on a jetty coming out to the baltic sea after a
music festival night several years ago - waiting for my
train home - one of most precious memories

and "vuja de" is my most played track from "the dream", i
lately heard it on a special radio broadcast show from
Underworld - seems like i'm not the only one who adores this
track.

Blue Room (the full version) is brilliant.

Orb's Adventures is the shit. The unreleased beta version of
Cydonia is my second favourite Orb album (some different
versions of tracks there). Pomme Fritz is insanely weird.
Orblivion, Orbus Terrarum and U.F.Orb (together with Blue
Room) are nice chill out material. The last couple of albums
have been OK but nothing mind blowing as far as I'm
concerned, although by no means have they gone to shit.

the rest is boring, IMHO

their most beautiful album is orbus terrarum, the
composition of the tracks is really amazing

of all time in my book. Their first three albums are beyond
supreme, even if they've stumbled a few times since.
