Warp = Useless???

offline virginpusher from County Clare on 2004-06-10 12:19 [#01233237]

As i mentioned in a previous thread i dont like warp
records. Personally because i am disappointed in the
direction that they are heading. It is almost as if the days
of old are gone and they are approaching artists that are
slightly more marketable perhaps?

It all started with the signing of !!!. I was at first
thinking "hey this is great, a new artist to the roster" but
that sadly disappeared. None of the new artists really have
the staying power of artists of old. Awhile back you have
aphex, autechre, etc etc.

As much as i like chris clark, his CD doesnt have a plathora
of playability. I find myself rarely listening to it.

Is this the downfall of what used to be the most prominant
electronic label in the UK?

I think it's a good move to "diversify" with the Arcola and
Lex sub-labels. Just a shame the newer Warp content isn't as
good as the old. I suppose it could be a case of rose tinted
spectacles with regard to their back catalogue, or perhaps
that all the truly great acts are already signed.

i guess they have been working in their direction for too
long. this IDM genre or braindance or whatever is a thing of
a few years, at a time it seemed as they could get 'round it
with straight ragga with the bug, but this thing was already
three years old when pressure came out.
the last important record was druqks, that is to say, of
course there is good music, it's just somewhere else.

I tend to agree. But is anybody releasing good music
anymore? It's a very different landscape now from the
halcyon days of the early-mid 90's. Lord alone knows when
things will pick up.

Don't be daft.

I agree that Warp's quality has decreased, but I'm sure that
has as much to do with the fact that most people here have
been listening to this type of music for a couple of years
now as the quality of the output itself.

To illustrate this better, nothing has ever given me
the same chills that Strawberry fields forever did when I
was first getting into music, and the Beatles.

Likewise, nothing on Warp is likely to give you the same
chills you experienced when hearing SAWv1 or Incanubula Hard
Normal Daddy or whatever for the first time.

Why, warp, why? You're just not that interesting anymore.

that, regardless what people say in the first place. they
have done it before and it worked. years ago.

in a recent interview, RDJ said he was getting exhausted by
novelty, that he'd be perfectly happy if he didn't hear
anything "new" for quite some time. i think i agree. there
are times for innovation, and times for just enjoying people
doing what they do. i mean, the most recent releases by
three warp mainstays...AFX, AE, and squarepusher...are among
the best work each has made. that's fine with me for now.

"Well I haven't heard anything released in the last 5 years

I must agree, I think this is the case for the most
electronic music... Ampoule has released some great stuff,
afx & ae have released some ok tracks - but over all it´s
most dull and boring stuff nowadays...
(heard it all before)

(maybe I´m just getting old... :D)

Now playing: Sonic youth - sonic nurse (retired rock music
for retired people! :D)

I agree, the overall quality of the music just doesnt seem
to be the same. Its been ages since i heard something truly
ground breaking.

I really wanted to believe that "ultra visitor" was going to
meet my expectations but it did not. "26 mixes" was just
rehashing what was flying around the internet forever.

Ol tommy boy would have been better off releasing that
amazing breezeblock set he just did. That is still top
quality!

I love Warp records but I do think that their best artists
are generally poached from other labels,
BOC,Brothomstates,Aphex,R.Devine,Squarepusher et al all
started life elsewhere as did many of their acts.

I think that's it, there's not much "enjoyment" in music
lately. It sounds like people trying studiously to outdo
each other in terms of programming, complexity (ack!),
abrasiveness and sheer knob twisting tom foolery. And who is
left behind in this race towards making the most
unlistenable pile of shite imaginable, the listener.

I think there is lot's of joy in ISAN's music who ironically
were going to have some stuff out on Warp though it never
happened (there's a track on the remix compilation though).

check the "Lucky Cat" album and "Salle de ISAN" e.p. on
Morr, some of the most expressive anolog twiddling I've
heard and melodies that would make even the most stoniest of
hearts smile.

artists or net labels like TavCOM and retropublik, or on

They have released music with some very interesting and good
"talents" like Brothomstates, ChrisC and Jimmy Edgar. They
also continue to give us releases by some of the "Old
Daddys" of electronica like BoC, Sqp and Ae. Warp are still
the best electronica-label there is...

Yes i have heard some great tunes come out of the EKT forum!
:D

I once again agree with dog_belch. I wish that there was
more feeling behind the music. It made me think. It really
does feel as though perhaps the music could be a bit too
technical and doesnt leave room for emotion.

warp's direction as of late has been radically different in
some aspects, but i'm still going to approach it with open
ears because these people put out music in the past that i
liked, so there's a good chance i might like what they put
out in the future. afterall, isn't the point of a record
label that you release the music you like? ultimately it's
up to them.

their new rock direction seems a lot different. yeah,
broadcast have been there a few years, but !!!, new TLS,
gravenhurst (i think this is somewhat rockish? not sure),
and even home video somewhat all seem to typify a possible
new outlook on music for the label. but i don't think this
is solely what they are concentrating on from now on: maybe
i'm alone (i don't think so), but i absolutely loved
ultravisitor. it's one of the best albums i've heard in
awhile. i really like the new Team shadetek, too. i didn't
mind jimmy edgar - sure, it wasn't groundbreaking or
exceptionally great, but it was good nonetheless. i like
chris clark's music a lot. yoseph was a very enjoyable
album.

personally i don't think warp have lost it at all.

they changed musical direction, or at least to what you had
hoped/expected - this does not necessarily mean they
contract bad artists.

they're doing what they always have been doing - exactly
what THEY want. obviously they're not going for the easy
money - seeing how impopular they have become.

i havent heard anything new that grabbed me by the balls
apart from clouddead (big dadda). to me it was the freshest
sounding thig id heard in ages. its to be expected though
with so many aphex wannabes its going to start sounding
samey. everyone looks to say 4 main guys for inspiration and
the musical gene pool shrinks. the most ground breaking
stuff ive been hearing lately is from artists who arent even
signed. listening to slsk records releases (not including my
own as its nothing special). but people like ears akimbo,
kernal32, dof, diagoro some of the stuff coming out is
amazing. keep your ear to the small labels for the real
talent. fuck warp they release good stuff again eventually
just dont forget theres much wider resources for music. not
everyone with talent is sigend
