No honestly, I know someone who can read hex (nearly) as quickly as he can read plain text... it's mad to watch. I know someone else who can read ROT-13 encrypted text so fast that it's almost indistinguishable from him reading normal English. |

The hex guy is a computer lecturer, his area of special interest is looking at things at disk level. Subsequently, he spends a lot time looking at hex stuff. Over time he has come to recognise the hex equivalents for ascii characters (even I was recognising the common things like .exe, .com very quickly when I did some work on the subject). The rot13 guy has just been using the net since the early days and again, learnt the plaintext equivalents. He recognises common words in rot13 almost as fast as he would english ones. Of course, if he encounters a new word (say, an unusual name) it'll take him a second to look at it letter by letter, but it doesn't slow him down much. |
