Mel Gibson's ''The Passion of the Christ''

I'm watching an interview with Mad Max himself on ABC,
speaking with Diane Sawyer. Looks really fascinating. If
nothing else, it's a beautifully and brutally filmed movie.
The hype and controversy is going to guarantee it's going to
some kind of twisted smash.

But aside from that, who knows? What's your take on this
one? I can't decide... even if it's a masterpiece, it's
going to be ripped to shreds. At least Jim Caviezel was a
good choice for Geez.

I think I'll go see it. I'm curious what kinda spin old
Gibby puts on the story. I don't get the impression that
this is any kind of fundamentalist evangelism tool at all,
which would be very refreshing if that's truly the case.

I think it will be interesting to really see what happened
instead of listening to the tabloid media's view of Jesus.

The choreographed ''falls'' when he's carrying the cross are
dang near ballet. But I like it a lot.

"The Passion Fruit of Jebus" would have been better. A
story of a passion fruit who was eaten to get rid of the
sins of the world.

There's some rumours going around that the film is overly
anti-semitic... but William Wallace denies it. And
apparently the film lacks context, and Riggs himself admits
it. As in, it doesn't do a good job at depicting just WHY
Jesus was being punished. So I'm wary about the actual
historical accuracy... but anyone can argue about the
history 'till the cows come home no matter WHAT you put on
screen.

This movie looks numbingly boring and literal-minded. They
should have set it in WWII with Germans instead of Romans,
and Bill Murray as Jesus.

william wallace? i wonder if you mean randall wallace?

oh wait, you're being funny, huh? you're talking about
gibson.. yeah, sorry, anyway...

i've been interested in this since i first heard about it
back in the day. from a purely cinematic standpoint. the
original plan was to have no dubbing and no subtitles, i
hope they stick to that.

also i like that cavaziel guy, so..

The reviews for this (IMDB) by the people that saw the
advanced screenings have been uniformly glowing, blindingly
so. Except for one guy who thought it was just an exercise
in shock and violence. Probably just a nancie-boy anyway.

50 Cent should have been Jesus and he could go around
bragging how the Romans speared him in the face 9 times (not
in the gay way). Then instead of being cucified he could
have entered a battle rap tornament and lost out to the evil
white boy, played by Eminem.

whether you believe or not (and i personally don't) its a
powerful story if told right.
im interested to see this version - looks a little less
straightlaced+cleancut than previous attempts.
theres no point dressing it up nicely, the passion of christ
was a pretty gruesome chain of events.
im glad gibson has finally found a distributor for it. he
finished it ages ago, but no one would touch it (primarily
because its all spoken in old aramaeic)..
saw the trailer at the cinema the other day, they seem to be
trying to sell it in an overemotive, glossy way.. which i
personally dont think they need to. but i guess after
shelving the film for this long, gibson's not going to rock
the boat. he'd probably let them market it any way they
want, so long as it gets released.

i liked his argument about how this movie promotes
anti-semitism.

"if you were to censor any movie that depicts one peer group
against another, then why would we even air any of it?"

i watched the interview last night as well.

i gotta say that melford came off as a bit of a zealot to
me. a skosh self righteous.

and, as ophecks mentioned, even mel admited that it was
lacking context.

just seems to me that the why is excedingly important
to the story. jesus had a very powerful message, that was
threatening to the estabilshed powers, and he was
(apperantly) really good at spreading that message.

that is why he was so powerful, and why he was
killed. it kinda sounds like mel left that almost
completely out of his telling of the story.

of course, i haven't seen the movie. it may rock my
lederhosen off, and cause me to stop worshiping the
darklords.

meh... i'm not too excited about it. i'm kinda thinking
instead of attempting to be an accurate retelling of
historical events; it's going to be one zealot's
self-indulgent attempt at making himself feel more
important. and, it'll end up being a huge jesus pity party,
and a pep rally for religious right-wingers.

but, if folks have interesting things to say about it after
they've seen it i might go.

It's a disgusting, cynical, gratuitous piece of shit.
Mel Gibson's a cunt. It's called the Passion of the Christ,
yet it shows none of the passion. As far as I can see it's
all about Mel Gibson getting off on how Jesus was tortured
and trying to win an award for playing a pained,
misunderstood victim.

Incidentally, I hate religion too, so it's not because I
love God or Jesus or anything. I respect Jesus about two
hundred times more than I respect Mel Gibson though.

In conclusion: Suck my whanger.

"It's called the Passion of the Christ, yet it shows none
of the passion."

..?

that's what this particular story is called.
passion of christ: "The sufferings of Jesus in the period
following the Last Supper and including the Crucifixion, as
related in the New Testament.".

it has little to do with the literal meaning of the word
'passion'.

that said, I'll be damned if I'm going to see this. sounds
completely awful + boring.

and it's based on the New Testament, which is seen by some
more as propaganda than a real telling of events.
