Mel Gibson's ''The Passion of the Christ''

I'm never gonna see this film, but I think it would be cool
if there was a film in which Jesus was an action hero;
flying through the air, resurrecting clubbed seals, and
implementing the ingredient of Kung Fu in his whoop-ass cans
he opens upon the bad guys.

Yeah. Jesus would be very effective as an action star.

it has little to do with the literal meaning of the word

'passion'.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. If it was called the
Flogging of the Christ or the Beatings of the Christ or the
Nailing of the Christ to a Big Fuck-Off Edifice, I'd admire
Gibson's honesty even if I still thought he was a cynical,
morbid bum-rapist.

Horsefactory: I was merely coming back at Elusive with my
own argument. He seemed a bit out of line, saying stuff like
"you must lead a boring life" if he doesn't know who he's
really talking to. A bit presumptuous and self-important.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by "please elaborate"?

What part are you finding hard to grasp.

I'm assuming we're bitching about the word 'passion' still.
The Passion of the Christ would suggest it was a film about
how much he cared. But it's not. It's a film about how much
he got fucked on. Which is distressing and pointless,
because it features none of the positive aspects of his
life.

"Passion" has a slightly different meaning in religious
terms to the sense of "overwhelming love" it means in common
parlance.

What does it mean in religious terms?

Passion
The sufferings of Jesus in the period following the Last
Supper and including the Crucifixion, as related in the New
Testament.

Answered my own question there through the wonders of
dictionary.com
Appologies.
I still think the film reeks though.

JESUS was tortured repeatedly... i dont know how some of you
think that this movie should be passionate about things that
DIDNT happen, he did get the shit licked outta him numerous
times before he was hung on a cross

as the whole christianity thing is a lie and complete crap
.. this movie sucked, cause its a fairytale besides the fact
that they just put some dude on a cross...

and yes nacmat is right.. its boring as hell.

I disagree on so many levels. Yes he was tortured but the
Bible only makes a passing reference to him being whipped
and it looked to me like an unusually large onus was placed
on the whipping part. Also, and I can't explain this, but it
just felt to me like they were getting a bizarre kick out of
filming a helpless man. As if they were seeing how guesome
they could make it so that people would sit up and think
"Fuck, he did all that for ME?!!?" Also, I think it's just
plain wrong to say that Christianity is a lie and complete
crap. There are small truths and goodness in almost
everything.

But I do agree that the western traditions born of
Christianity, where there is a definite distinction between
good and evil, and the fact that God is ephemeral and that
sex is put down due to it being earthly and base is all a
load of toss.

Totally. You don't have to believe in it or anything, but
dismissing an entire culture takes a pretty narrow mind.
It's just too broad and sweeping.

But I like Fleetmouse's completely inappropriate and totally
stupid interjection. Reminds one that life isn't actually as
serious as many would have you believe.

I think God would resent the implication that The

the collective minds and souls of everyone in the world
combined as a unique power, intrinsically linked through the
oneness of the universe.

whatever... to whoever said that I used particularly bad
words to say that.. so what??? christianity is a crock of
SHIT!

If YOU need a myth to tell you to be good to people then
your WEAK, i dont need anyone or anything to tell me that I
should be good to others or that I should accept things in
life. thats crap!!! the bible is a fairytale book, a bedtime
story.

jesus DID exist, but not as this movie says... he wasnt the
son of god.... he wasnt divine... blah blah blah. he was a
dude who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, a martyr.
read a fuckin book or two on the subject.

christianity is conjured up.... much like the stories of the
greek gods, no different. NO DIFFERENT. I mean christianity
can be traced before the time of "christ" to king making
ceremonies thousands of years BC. so make what you will of
this whole christianty thing, but I know its a scam.

christianity is a crutch.

the passion of christ is boring.

What you say in that above post is completely true as far as
I'm concerned, but Christianity did give rise to some of the
best art, music and literature the world has seen. Its
cultural and socio importance is huge and I think it would
be wrong to dismiss a whole belief system (no matter how
ridiculous it seems to you) as being a crock of shit.

I know religious people who are intelligent, open minded and
a good laugh, as well as being fucking hardcore tokers,
ravers, drinkers and just generally up for it. They are not
weak. I don't choose to believe and live by what they choose
to, but that doesn't mean they are wrong. It's when religion
gets out of hand and issues are blown out of all proportion
with regard to their original context that things start to
get spooky and wrong.

I think you need to lighten up on the Christianity bashing a
bit. As I keep saying (maybe it's the whiskey) I fucking
hate Church and those religious zealots but leave the poor
fuckers alone and assault some other religion with your
presence for a bit. Balance the hatred out a bit, you know?

rocketjohnny: what a weak ass fucking answer.... or comeback
whatever you want to call that. you bring NOTHING to the
table, you are horribly uneducated on the subject of
christianity I can plainly see that.

what you dont get , and im sure of it - is that you dont
need a set of rules, or guidelines to keep you in place, you
can do it yourself and if not then that is weak and stupid
and lame and just overall crappy. and if thats you, then..
well you suck.

JAPES:ah! your a good man to talk to on this subject!
someone worthy of talking to about this! I can easily agree
that its not good or nice to call badly upon others and
their religion, if people need to follow something to make
them sleep better at night, then go for it! i wont stop
anyone! but im just pointing out that these people are
relying on it too much, learn... reach out towards other
things besides thinking that if your bad your going to hell
and if your good your going to heaven... and that the bible
is true... or that... well lets just say it could go on for
a long time.

there is a lot more to spirituality than 'keeping in place'.
and these goals are not exclusive to christianity, they are
common through all faiths.

you resort to name calling, and riding on the assumption
that im 'uneducated'. you couldnt be more wrong.

Here are some ctrl-v's that are bound to piss you right off,
but I feel compelled to paste them all the samee...

John 15
17This is my command: Love each other.
18"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me
first. 19If you belonged to the world, it would love you as
its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I
have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world
hates you.

John 3
18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does
not believe stands condemned already because he has not
believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19This is
the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved
darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.
20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come
into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

Anyway...
my perspective on this movie...

Really well done, from a cinematic, artistic and theological
perspective. While it does lack context, it follows in the
tradition of the passion plays which purpose was to get
people psyched to find out the rest of the story. I don't
think it is any more anti-semetic than a story about the
American Revolution would be anti-British. Certainly people
throughout history have done horrible things to the Jews in
the name of christianity but I don't think that is the
correct biblical approach.

Saw this last night. It was a good film but a bit over the

it would have been gore enough if it had followed the bible,
but they add more things... thats stupid, it was not
neccessary and they only get to make the movie boring as
hell.

example:

I dont need to see how he falls like 15 times carrying the
cross, I would have gotten the idea with 3 or 4 times. and
probably that would have impressed me more

the moments of the begining, previous to being caught could
have been a lot better...there is no tension.
the fight between soldiers and apostols looks like a xena
episode...crap.

as a film, it lacks rythm, tension, progression (of
argument)

and it lacks acting:
jewish and romans only shout and laugh
women just cry
jesus just bleeds

but nobody acts... or very little, and when they do those
few times...its just normal tv acting...not a good movie in
any possible way
