Moving to England?

Since my life has taken so many turns lately and I've
solidly decided to pursue electronic music, I'm heavily
considering moving to England within the next 9 months.

I know I'll need a job, find a place to stay and hopefully
make some good contacts before I make the move. I'm really
serious about this.

Wondering if you guys have any tips, local information,
anything like that... job hunting (I'm a soon to be
graduating system administrator) or where the best places to
stay are, anything that might help

I appreciate this tremendously, I feel the energy moving
faster, like something needs to happen with my life

Go to a decent sized city that isn't London.

Tip: If someone in England offers you a fag, they are not
inviting you to have anal intercourse with a person of the
homosexual persuasion but, in fact, are offering you a
cigarette.

London is not shrowded in a permanent fog.

No one speaks like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

The Queen does not exist. She is an animatronic puppet used
to entice American tourists to these shores.

Most importantly of all; never, ever publicy admit that
you're an American. Say you're Canadian or something.

This I've heard, the question is 'why?'

I'm from California, when I went to Europe people liked
that... they just don't like the rest of Americans, and
quite frankly, neither do I for the most part... I think
we'll get along fine

How're you graduating as a sys admin? Are you getting a
vocational qualification or an academic one? I only ask
because (and I'm not being nasty, just telling you the
truth) American qualifications aren't taken terribly
seriously here... it might be best to wait till you have a
year or two's experience from working in america before
trying to move here- you'll find it a lot easier to get a
sys admin job that way. That is of course, assuming you want
a sys admin job here? (Might be a wise choice- easy position
to get music apps on your work pc and "get paid to make
music"! :)

...and don't expect to be able to buy your own place till
you're 30, even if it's a really modest 1 bedroom flat.

I have a year of experience and will have a 4 year degree in
computer engineering with a solid knowledge of FreeBSD,
hopefully that will be enough to land me a QA job or
something. I'd rather start small so I have more time for
other things. That info is VERY helpful though, thanks

Where would a good place to look for a job be and what
cities would you recommend? I have a friend who works at
Sun, but they're laying off everyone, he might go to Ireland
on their company program, but it's unsure right now

Staying where I am isn't an option right now, I need to
move, I need a huge change in my life

Ah, if you've got a years experience you should be fine.

As to a city, Liverpool or Manchester are good bets... a lot
of companies are moving their administrative centres up
there as they're a lot cheaper than london, but have the
infrastructure to handle big business. I'd normally advise
you to steer clear of Ireland for jobs... but Ireland are
massive in the IT sector.

What are the benefits, besides lower rent, of Liverpool or
Manchester over London?

if you have money move to london :)

if you're after music that is surely the best place to
be...

if i had money i'd go there for 5-7 years or as long as im
going to enjoy visiting parties :)

For music, London and Manchester are the best places.

But like that guy said, Manchester is ALOT cheaper than
London for everything.

Liverpools good aswell, but you might not be able to
understand a single word they say to you.

I've also been entertaining the idea of spending a few years
in the greater london area.

i can fake a few different versions of the english accent as
well as scottish, irish, and even austrailian, so i don't
think i'll have too much trouble blending in. accept i
still like to use words like "french fries" and phrases like
"blow up them damn iraqi's."

that could blow my cover i guess.

Lower cost of living too- might sound like the same thing,
but I really do think people in london generally lead a
"poorer" life- an extra £3,000 a year on your wages doesn't
come close to compensating for the increased cost of loads
of things (aside from housing)- food, alcohol, night club
entry, clothes, etc. all cost less in the north.

Fuck it, go for it and move to London. It might be hard work
at first, money doesn't go far here, but if thats what you
want, do it. Sounds like you have the enthusiasm to make it
work.

As for getting a job... check workthing.com totaljobs.com
getajob.com ( ithink) look for "jobs in london" (or
manchester or wherever) on google and see whats there

to get employed over there right now?

I know some of you englishers are coming online soon, any
help would be quite welcome

No, no. We hate Americans for all sorts of reasons. Foreign
policy is just one. That is top of the list for those
countries around the world who you've shat on. Its more
cultural for us Brits.

Just the general cultural differences between Americans and
Brits, or even Europeans. Americans tend to be loud, brash
and uncouth while us Brits, and many of our European
comrades, are more sophisticated, subtle and refined.

These differences count for a lot.

I thought the defenition of an economic migrant was one
wishing to improve their (material) quality of life by
moving to another country?

To live, not necessarily to work... although sadly I think
it'll end up being hand in hand

Checked out jobs, looks better there then it does here right
now
