Who makes the best beats?
I'm not talking best tunes, I'm talking skills when programming the drums in. Both make some quality stuff and really work those drums sounds.
Who do you think is best?
BAM! vs AGGGH!

Aphex without a doubt...there is a huge difference to their styles of "drill". Aphex is crafted drum patterns, Snares is fast retriggers from limited sample breaks.

i feel hot steam in my neck so i guess i better start elaborating;
imo snares is best since he breaks out of 4/4 schedules while still managing to keep things coherent, the beats are loud and hard yes, but still comprehendable and detailed.
i'm not an expert by any means so i don't know much of the technical side, still i feel that snares is a skilled beat-programmer
when looking overall i prefer afx for obvious reasons (melody, diversity originality)

He takes a short ass break samples and retriggers them at different points, and at different speeds etc. I'm not knocking him for it, but it is different to say Squarepusher or Aphex who sound as though they construct the breaks they use...which is why there is often more musical variation in the latters tracks than in Snares.
I'm not knocking Snares but it is a different way of working.

no, but he is more sample based...as I said I'm not knocking him.
od_step seems to be from the Aphex/Squarepusher school.
Dirqual from the Snares school.
I still fucking love the stuff that both of them do.

nacmat: I'll e-mail you when I get home mate :)
ecnaddniarb: I didn't know he just triggered samples. I thought he took samples and reconstructed them piece by piece. Having read that though, it gave my an idea of something to do in Reason for triggering beats. It works as well :)
I can't choose who I like best as a beatmaster. I love Aphex's work and really enjoy it but it's the same for Snares. But it's for different reasons that their beats are so good. Oh man!
From a technical point of view though Aphex is the winner.

spoke to vsnares today. He programs his beats. Says he used to use an old Amiga 500 with a two colour monitor. I asked if his eyes go goggly from looking at the screen all day puttin dots in cubase and he says he is used to it.
So there you have it! :D

He is wasting a lot of time then, because they just sound like sample retriggers. I wouldn't argue though that he may make his source breaks...
Also about Snares using strange time signatures...I don't think he even uses time signatures...there is no point working to time signatures in drill, you just play it by ear.

the only reason "the twin wins" is because half of the people here posted aphex because they have only listened to maybe 1 or 2 of snares' albums.
its bugs me quite a bit - but whatever - i respect nacmat a lot for deciding not to vote when he isnt at a position to do so.

kid 606 and hrvatski are in a completely differant sound spectrum then snares is - although the kid has some excellent drum sequencing - his stuff isnt nearly as consistently good as aaron's is, nor does it even compare structurally to aaron's works.
in their own categories you could compare them as equal in their fields - but i would never directly compare them to one another. (buts thats just my opinion)
