I know it's been discussed before (and still is), but make
sure to protect your Windows box before this Saturday.

news article

"The 'time bomb' in the worm's code, discovered by
anti-virus and security researchers, will turn every
infected system into a DoS agent on August 16, this
Saturday. The systems will begin sending random strings of
data to the windowsupdate.com Web site in an attempt to
knock it offline."

processor you prolly have the 32-bit version.

Okay, patch worked,
but after a search for msblast, the
'msblast' application
is still there in
c:\windows\system
and there's a
'MSBLAST.EXE-09FF84F2.pf' file in
c:\windows\prefetch.

Can I just delete these two to get rid of it?
Or is there some sort of virus scan thing
I should do?

offline deepspace9mm from filth on 2003-08-12 18:40 [#00819035]
Points: 6846 Status: Addict

If you delete those two they reappear next time you use the
net, i think there's a worm dialer thing as well to get rid
of, might be called access.exe but my memory isn't too hot.
I'd recommend virus scanning, the newest update of AVG
worked for me.

is WinME known to just completely disacknowledge the
existence of certain hardware? Seriously? Cause if so, WinME
will be gone THIS WEEK.

offline Oddioblender from Fort Worth, TX (United States) on 2003-08-12 18:50 [#00819037]

The only reason it won't be gone tonight is because I'm out
of CDR's.

if the patch isn't working use a firewall like zonealarm,
then it will stop the worm fucking with your download of the
patch: then i used www.B0P.me.co.uk/FixBlast.exe to sort it
THEN it links you to the patch, cos the straight windows
patch cant cut the mustard on its own...

Came home from a three day trip to Amsterdam, and
immediately both my laptop and my desktop pc at home got
this fucking virus. I was up till about 2.30am this morning,
dealing with the shit.

Thanks pOgO, for all the information here...I've downloaded
the Symantec Removal tool, and things seem to be OK on my
laptop, from which I am posting from now. I had reinstalled
Windows last night (I know I know...I didn't need to do
that, but I won't take shit off my PC), and when I did, it
still kept coming up with the same error. My Desktop PC is
having Windows XP reinstalled as I type this message, now I
know how to deal with the matter properly.

People that write viruses should be fucking killed!!

I managed to get this fixed, I fucking hope, last night
after 4 hours. Not a happy fucking bunny.

Actually pOgO it was the other thread I read, but thanks to
every one here who posted info.....I had bookmarked these
pages, and was frantically writing down on paper the
instructions listed here
....beofre the system would auto shutdown. I must have
rebooted about 7 times :(

Thanks also to my mate eXXailon, whom I was chatting to when
this problem first cropped up, and for posting me the links
here and saying "Someone else has your problem!" ....'cos at
that time, I didn't have a fucking clue what was going on.

So chris...

did you bring a virus back with you? Hope you used a strong
firewall out there son!

Points: 12687 Status: Lurker | Followup to Jedi Chris: #00819263

you need to make sure that you have your firewall enabled at
all times as it's attacking open ports

even with the virus still on your pc, if you have no
connection to the internet the pc will not restart.

I find that quite bizarre =o\

I'm reinstalling Windows right now, yeah? (I have two
drives, all my data on Drive D:) So my drive C: is blank.
So what I'm doing is reinstalling Windows XP, then I will
run the fix tool without being connected to the net, then
install the Microsoft Fix, then install Norton Anti-virus,
then connect to the internet and run Live-Update. Should be
OK shouldn't it?

as long as you don't connect withough a firewall

are you using USB or ethernet ?

Points: 11496 Status: Lurker | Followup to pOgO: #00819280

I connect using Ethernet. The Windows Firewall doesn't
allow me to use file transfer in messenger, and I'm not that
impressed with Zone Alarm Pro (?!?!?). I thought the
Microsoft patch dealt with this matter

the thing is, it'll fix it but if you connect without a
firewall, you'll have an open connection which will be
attacked

I'd advised you suffer without file transfer untill this
whole thing has blown over =os

I seem to be about the only person who's applied this patch
before ever seeing the problem. No early shutdowns for me.
