I know what you're all thinking. "I wish I could make awesome fractal beats like my hero, w M w".
Well....
Now you can! Just download "fractal beats.zip" from me, unzip the file, unzip your pants, open the text file and follow the instructions!
I will be on soulseek as "smouse" sharing this in exchange for cheese. But first I have to install soulseek. I know I know, you're understandably really impatient. You must have it now because it is SO awesome. But just hold on and soon enough you too will possess my super powers.

Damn, it's 10, 000 kb zipped... and hotmail (my email) won't allow more than 1000. I'm ignorant in matters involving sharing files over the internet though. Is there another way? this celsius fair enough mix is nice, nice beats and arrangement. Don't totally get where the fractals come into play tho... This fractal beats tool, how did you make it? What development environment did you use? I've built tools that use fractals to generate different types of data in max.msp, can be really fun, although I find I spend a lot more time doing software development when I'd prefer to be making music, sort of cooled off on it lately.

I've been making fractal melodies with a program called Oblivion. It's freeware, and no I don't remember exactly where i got it, but it makes fractal midi files -- you can choose up to six instruments, and you can make fractal melody songs up to about 5 minutes in length within seconds. All you do is type in numbers as variables, (or if you want repetition of a sort) and choose octaves, scales, polyphonic options, etc etc.
Good stuff, but it's sort of muzak-ish. Half of making good stuff is luck.

Ok, I made an account in this little doohicky called "AOL instant messanger". There's an option to "send file to buddy"... but I don't know if this will work. I have the alias "norfzorf" in that if it would successfully send a 10 mb zipped folder... My "fractal beats" might not be the same sort of fractals that other software can make (I remember a site called lars music num or something about fractal melody music), but they are fractals technically because they involve scaling symmetry.

Since I'm too inept to overcome the small technological hurdles of sharing this crap, I'll just post the gay text file here:
In the "fractal beats" folder you downloaded, I've included the following items:
1) this text file 2) modplug tracker (the music software I used, but you can do the same technique with other programs too)
3) telefon shremix(tutorial).it (the data file of one of my tracks that uses "fractal beats")
4) 0f-telefon Shremixfinal1audfinal2.mp3 (the mp3 of the above track data for handier listening)
You'll have to unzip this stuff (right click the zipped folder and click "extract all")
The purpose of this text is to explain a simple but interesting technique I found to make
"fractal beats" using free software called "modplug tracker". I'll explain the general idea first,
then walk you through a simple tutorial type thingy with modplug tracker so you can easily see how
to do it yourself.
----------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------
The general idea:
The technique is basically to take a wav file of a beat and play it in three consecutive octaves simultaneously
(such as the notes c-4, c-5, and c-6). Raising the pitch of a beat one octave results in a new beat that is
exactly twice as fast as the original (and an octave higher in pitch), and raising it another octave
results in a new beat that is exactly 4 times as fast as the original beat (and 2 octaves higher in pitch). Playing all
three octaves of the beat results in a new beat that is intricate, difficult to predict and "fractal-y".
Since a higher octave is *TWICE* as fast as it's note (not, say, three or five times faster), it is a good idea
to make the total number of rows in your original beat be a power of *TWO*. For example make your original beat (which
you havn't combined with other octaves of itself yet) have 256, 512, 1024, or 2048 rows etc. The reason for this is
that you want them all phase well with eachot

The reason for this is that you want them all phase well with eachother (when the fastest octave completes exactly one cycle, the slowest octave
will be exactly 1/4 through it's cycle). The longer the original beat (2048 rows instead 256 for example) the more
interesting the final triple-octave-beat will be because of the extra combinations possible.
I've found that high irregularity in the symmetry of the original beat has the best results. For example, if your
original beat was simply a repeating drum "bum bum bum bum", then the combination of 3 octaves of this beat will
be annoying, rigid and boring like this:
original beat: buuuuuuuuuum buuuuuuuuuum buuuuuuuuuum buuuuuuuuuum
1 higher octave: buuuum buuuum buuuum buuuum buuuum buuuum buuuum buuuum
2 higher octaves: bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum
----------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------
A walkthrough to make "fractal beats" in modplug tracker:
Open modplug tracker by clicking on it. In modplug, click "file", then "open" and find
"telefon shremix(tutorial).it" Almost all the information is entered in the menu called "patterns", so go to that
menu (click on "patterns" at the top).
I'll just show you some basic stuff. There's a list of numbers near the top (5,5,5,5,6,7,8,9...). Try clicking on 5,
and then on 6 and then on 7. As you saw, the data in the main white bars changed each time. Each of those numbers you
just clicked on is a different "pattern". If you press F6, it will play every pattern listed up there from left to
right. (Press F8 to stop playing.) You probably intuitively know all this stuff anyway but all well... ok click on
pattern 5. The numbers on the left of the screen (0 through 255) are the rows of the pattern. (you can change the number
of rows by clicking on the top left c

(you can change the number of rows by clicking on the top left corner where it says "#5"- but I chose to use 256 rows because it's a power of two)
Move the mouse and click on row 0. now press F7. F7 will repeatedly play this individual pattern only. (press F8 to
stop playing). As you heard, it's just a simple beat. Any beat will do. Ok, in "channel 2" of pattern 5, it
says:
c-4 04 -- 001 c-4 04 -- 002 etc...
This means it is the note "c-4" of sample "04" with effect "o01/o02"... (right click where it says "channel 2"
and select "solo" to mute all the channels besides this one... right click again and select "unmute all" to
unmute them again) now in the menus at the top, click on "samples" and go to sample 4. This is the sample you
just heard in channel 2. (the oO1, o02 data instruct it to start playing that sample somewhere in the middle of
the sample, this causes it to sound stretched out. Using these effects aren't necessary but I just did it.)
Basically, to start making a track, go to this "sample" menu and import wav files, then go to the "patterns" menu
and arrange the samples in patterns.
ok, now go to pattern 6,7,8 and 9. Each of these is the same as pattern 5, only with irregularities and mutations,
because as I said, fractal beats sound better when it's more intricate and less rigid. The next step would be to
delete every pattern except for 6,7,8,9 and 31 (don't bother doing it though) and save it as a wav (by selecting
"file", "save as wav") If I remember right, though, I changed the speed to 4 before doing this (go to the menu
"general" and change the speed to 4 if you want to do this (don't though). Doing so would make the patterns play
twice as slow (the lower the number the faster the speed). There is an important reason to include pattern 31...
when you save a wav file, modplug annoyingly adds some extra time on the end of it. The purpose of pattern 31 is
to have a loud divider that visually announces where the end of the wav is su

The purpose of pattern 31 is to have a loud divider that visually announces where the end of the wav is supposed to be (so you can loop it at
this exact point). I already did all of this though. Just go to sample 16 in the samples menu. See, when I imported
this, there were 4 lound percussion sounds that I put on the end (pattern 31) so I cut them off at their exact
starting mark so the wav would be the exact size I meant it to be. After doing this, double click the whole thing,
right click and "set as loop" (this will make it loop forever when played in the pattern editor). I copied sample
16 into sample 17, but then reversed sample 17 using the two backwards-red-arrows-icon at the top. Also, I made them
both lower octaves than they were imported in as by changing the data in "transpose" from g#5 to g#3.
Ok, it's interesting that I'm still writing when nobody will bother reading this far. Go to "patterns". For now just
delete the first 9 patterns: 5,5,5,5,6,7,8,9,31 (click on the first 5 and press delete 9 times) Now the first
pattern should be 23. (pressing f6 will play starting from pattern 23 now). Ok look at row 0 in pattern 23. This
is where I made the original beat into the "fractal beat". In channels 1 through 6 I made a fractal beat out of sample
16. As you see, there's 3 c-5's, two c-6's and one c-7. This is because it sounds better if you amplify the volume
of the lower octaves. In channel 8 through 13 I made a fractal beat of sample 17 (the reversed one). It's 3 octaves
lower than sample 16 as you see. (channels 14-19 are just amplification). I also made this reversed fractal beat in
stereo (go to the "general" menu and you see "surround" checkmarked for these channels.)
That's about it. Channels 20-25 are just a simple beat to "tie the complexity together". and later a melody comes in.

Yep it is pretty similar to that method...I am thinking, because I am actually getting more and more interested in the ideas behind generative music that I might actually write my own program to do it...that way I will get to know everything from the ground up...

Can't any of you 'feel' music? I know Ae say they write their own programs but this is just nerdy! Copying peoples styles of making music is a wasted oppurtunity to be creative. You've all got 10 years left to do something interesting....... experiment yourselves, don't try and replicate other peoples results, how plastic!!

Nah, that cannot make fractal music.
Jivver I didn't know anything about Ae saying they write their own programs. And I don't think you grasp the concept of generative music if you think it is copying someone elses music...if anything the idea behind it is NOT to sound like anyone else...
