IDM & musicality

which IDM artists do you think possess the most musicality?
please only respond if you know what that means. personally
i think RDJ and jega probably have the most musicality, but
i can think of a lot of others who use a lot of conventional
music theory (whether they admit it or not *coughrdj*).
please no one say venetian snares just cos you like his time
signatures...

fuck it i'm listening to bad company's new record at the
moment - that's a whole lot more exciting and fresh than
moat electronica (won't use the word idm me)

For the uneducated morons, like me... musicality is defined
by dictionary.com as musical sensitivity or talent. It seems
to be a pretty vague word, but I choose autechre, crunch and
otto von schirach.

if you're saying what i think you're saying, isn't
"musicality" what defines IDM over other electronic music?

supposedly, but i'm being more specific here by emphasizing
traditional music theory (for those of us who've studied
it).

I still like imaginary fantasy's melody music a lot more
than all classical music except maybe chopin. I bought his
DAM cd from mp3.com for 5 bucks! It's called music for
singing hippos and is a masterpiece. *thinks about penguin

no - it's nerdy fanboys who need some complicated
programming to cling on t for superiority that defines
i..d.m last time i was listening britney, michael jackson
anf destiny's child were winning on the melody front and
quite often on tne quality music front.

my point exactly.. but yet there are some IDM musicians who
really do come up with some of the best melodies ever.
sometimes they're simple, sometimes they're deceptive in
that they use a lot of complicated music theory which isn't
important to the listener cos it just sounds good.

Great topic my friend!

I agree I think RDJ knows his Music Theory, I think
Squarepusher knows a bit about it as well.

What about Takemura isnt he a pianist?

So you study theory titsworth?
Are you a music major or do you study it as a hobby?

takemura seems pretty well versed in music theory from what
i've heard. a lot of idm musicians have been classically
trained, but most of them aren't brilliant at music theory.
if you want to count them (they blur the line between
"post-rock" and "idm".. 2 bullshit terms for ya) i'd
definitely count tortoise among some of the most
theoretically advanced idm artists around.

squarepusher... he's definitely a great musician but i'm
undecided on whether or not he really knows a lot about
music theory. he could've made MIRON and the ep's just being
influenced by weather report and fusion era miles davis, not
necessarily knowing the intricacies of what went into the
music.

in a way this is a pretty poor and pointless topic since so
far, myself included, it's a lot of insubstantiated claims..
i guess i wasn't really prepared to explain exactly how
so-and-so use advanced music theory in their tracks. maybe
later.

Jenkinson knows the jazz route, RDJ knows his pentatonic
scale and plaid know they're 'progressive, 70's scales'.
There are no wrong notes really. things like 'demonicus de
musica' which was banned for hundreds of years, where the
half tone above was played simultaneously was demonic!!!
sounds are sounds, like kraftwerk said...'you can hear
symphoneys on the motorway, rising and descending pitches of
engines combining is a musical experience!' but......there
is nothing like a 'doh..reh..me..' song!

I am sure plaid know a lot of music (classic theory) as they
can get so beautifull melodies

uziq is surely one of those too

i'll say squarepusher for his sense of timing and rhythm and
his overall knowledge of jazz.

rdj for the obvious and already stated reasons.

u-ziq for a playful sense of melody.

i find the best sense of musicality in SAW vol 2 though.
some of the melodies on there are sublime, and the usage of
different time signatures and repeating melodies seems to
create a sense of timelessness (take curtains for example).

i might have completely gotten this musicality thing wrong,
but thats my two cents.

Have you heard 'apollo' buy brian eno? SAW 2 is a 10 years
later representative of this album, It's all wallpaper
music, that has its place in the background... but... it's
not a mile stone in music concoiusnous(splg!!!!). check some
ealy eno/stockhausen for some real ambient focus.

'Stimmung' is a brilliant album although repetative by
stockhausen but this is pure western tonality that
influences people from bjork to AE to squarepusher...

needless to say i completely disagree with you that SAW2 is
just wallpaper music and frankly i'm surprised you think
that.

jivver, i've heard nearly all early eno and some

Pfft, fuck if I know. I've never been one to care too much
for how ''complex'' something is, picking out all the clever
scales and unique chord changes and progressions. Some
people got the gift of game melodically, some don't. I guess
AFX tends to have the melodies that stick with me the most,
but it's not like any of them required a certificate of
graduation from ''The School of Super Complex Composition''
to come up with. Jenkinson seems to have SOME kind of
virtuousity, but I can't put my finger on it. It's not in
his melodies.
