Just started reading this book after wanting to read it for
years

OH MY FUCKING GOD

this book is SO great! WAY ahead of its time. If you haven't
read it, I STRONGLY recommend it

I haven't finished reading it yet, I'm at the part where
Winston is in the Ministry of Love, but it's still an
amazing book, even if I haven't finished it yet!

I think 1984 is a book that evolves as you get older. I read
it when i was 12 and then again when I was about 22 and then
again when I was about 27. The book meant totally different
things to me each time I read it. It is a magical piece of
work.

One of the little books who got into me for a period of
time. A true classic.
And while we're on the book subject. I'm thinking about
checking out some William S Burroughs. Any good starting
point?

The Place of Dead Roads is a good Burroughs book, and Junky
too.

I thought I had "borrowed" this book from work but it turned
out to be Catch 22. I suppose I should buy a legitimate copy
when I finish my Ellroy trilogy. Or maybe hunt down an ebook
of it.

This book is a fine book. I like the unapologetic bleakness
of it. It gets better and better as you go through it.

Anybody ever seen the film with william hurt and richard
burton? It's quite a faithful retelling of the book and the
acting is top notch, especially when winston get's "broken".
2+2=5. I'm sure that's one of radiohead's new songs.

Very good book. Orwell's other stuff (apart from animal
farm) isn't as good, but they're still worth reading.

i liked animal farm back when i read it in 8th grade
(everyone else seemed to hate it). i picked up a nice copy
on 1984 at borders for $4.99, it has all these great
illustrations and design elements, beautiful book. started
reading, then i stopped, now i need to read it over again.

No book has had a stronger impact on my life than 1984, I
don't think Though Milan Kundera, who I've been reading a
few books of recently, is coming close. And yeah, the film
of 1984 was unbelievably good, compared to what I was
expecting. One of the best book-to-film transitions I've
ever seen. John Hurt was amazing.

AMAZING book.......when you think of when it was written
it's even more mind boggling =0)

when you're finished you should check out 1984 (the film)
with john hurt, there is a scene in that movie that will
make your SKIN crawl, i still see it clearly in my mind,
i'll never forget it.

There's a book written by a russian author called "We" and
it predates, both 1984 and Brave new world by several
decades.

1984 was actually released in 1984. I haven't seen it yet,
but the DVD was just released earlier this month so I'll be
picking it up soon. And, yes, the book was amazing.

On a related note, a while back I turned on the SciFi
channel and I watched a few minutes of a modern 'Brave New
World' movie which absolutely blew. I think it was actually
made by the SciFi channel. It was horrible. Anyone else see
this monstrosity?

damn meho you stole what i was gonna say. orwell ripped a
lot of stuff from "We" and even said so himself in an
interview--> he also reviewed the book and then began to
write 1984. theres many similarities between We, 1984 and
Brave New World but each book is a different beast--all
great books by the way.

good, but it doesn't come close 1984.

i think that anthem by ayn rand is another piece of work to
throw in the mix when talking about 1984 and brave new
world. it's succinct, though effective.

1984: Brilliant, brilliant. I found the end very
distressing, though.

Naked Lunch: Truly revolting. And completely, utterly
nonsensical. I couldn't get past the first third. Insanity.

1984 was excellent, especially with pretty hate machine in
the background.

Naked Lunch was the next level of revolting--the parts where
he talks about the dildo and the turd sliding out the boy's
ass
