1984 has one of the saddest endings to a book ever. I'm
trying to think of some other books with a super sad ending.
Coming up blank, though Cormac McCarthy's books usually end
on a dreary note. And that dog dies in old yeller doesn't
he?

but still so good.

yeah, it's pretty good, though it's extremely heavy on her
objectivism, so if you're not into it, it's kind of
grating.

i didn't read the fountainhead. it's good, right?

maybe we're talking about different ones, because i don't
think the one i saw is as old as the one you're talking
about. unless you were a sophmore in highschool a couple of
years ago. i'll have to check into that.

this is the one i saw. made in 1998. leonard nimoy
is in it.

according to imdb, there was another made for tv adaptation
made in 1980.

i have anthem, fountainhead and atlas shrugged which I will
get to but her whole notion of capitalism being the best and
whatnot makes me not want to read her books as much.

i got the shits and the flu for a week after. i think its
cursed.

though the "you are the dead" bit frightened the shit right
outta me.

one of my all-time favorites as well, big brother reminds me
of the direction our current government is going with the
cowboy-in-chief's deparment of homeland security and
whatnot... fuckers are always watching

The book is great but I found it very depressing.

If anyone wants to hear a song that sampled heavily the film
version of 1984, check out "Carry" by Skinny Puppy.

I wrote a mini essay about the similarities between Nine
Inch Nails' Broken EP and 1984. There are so many
correlations, it seems like Trent was thinking of the book
as he wrote the music.

Pinion -> Winston
Wish -> Winston starts by wishing he could make a change, be
"something real"
Last -> Winston meets Julia and even though he knows "this
isn't meant to last, this is for right now," he strives to
have some kind of relationship with her.
Help Me I Am In Hell -> Winston gets captured.
Happiness In Slavery -> Winston learns to love Big Bother.
Gave Up -> Winston stops trying to change the system and
accepts the way the world is.

----

perfect little dream the kind that hurts the most
forgot how it feels well almost
no one to blame always the same
open my eyes wake up in flames
it took you to make me realize
it took you to make me realize
it took you to make me realize
it took you to make me see the light
smashed up my sanity
smashed up my integrity
smashed up what i believed in
smashed up what's left of me
smashed up my everything
smashed up all that was true
gonna smash myself to pieces
i don't know what else to do
covered in hope and vaseline
still cannot fix this broken machine
watching the hole it used to be mine
just watching it burn in my steady systematic decline
of the trust i will betray
give it to me i throw it away
after everything i've done i hate myself for what i've
become
i tried
i gave up
throw it away

Wow, as I reread the lyrics, more stuff jumped out at me

covered in hope and vaseline
still cannot fix this broken machine
watching the hole it used to be mine

It's when Winston's banging Julia (the vaseline reference)
that he feels most hopeful, but despite all their fucking,
the Big Brother machine cannot be stopped. And "watching the
hole that used to be mine" could be a somewhat crude
reference to Julia.

1984: i loved it when i was about 14 years old. tried to
read it again a few months ago... total bullshit. especially
regarding the fact that orwell´s anti-utopia is proved
wrong - huxley described what´s going on today instead.
