WOW! im just starting to get into them... i had heard that they're very influential and very important as far as the development of rock music goes, but i never really listened to them till just now...
...and holy shit, i can see why theyre so influential!
their self-titled album Velvet Underground is A M A Z I N G !!!!!
...its like EVERY SINGLE SONG is a favourite, they're all perfectly sing-along-able, the lyrics are great, the guitar is beautiful, its powerful and deep and all that, and i can recognise a lot of what other bands have immitated since them.....
wow, im glad i found these guys, its like finding squarepusher or BoC
...and i haven't even heard their first couple of albums, which are supposed to be amazing too, and more 'avant garde'
check out:
Rock & Roll Candy Says Pale Blue Eyes Jesus Beginning to see the Light What Goes On I'm Set Free Sweet Jane Cool it Down I Found a Reason [..and especially:] Oh! Sweet Nuthin'
......anyways, i HIGHLY recommend this band to everyone, knowing that lots of ppl hear appreciate good music no matter what genre, and this is fucking timeless brilliant music
.....um..... what do you think?

You actually picked up one of their "worst" albums. You should get "The Velvet Underground & Nico", and "White Light/White Heat" to hear the real influential stuff.

Yeah, Loaded, Velvet Underground, Vu and Nico, all amazing stuff.
But my personal favorite is White Light White Heat, but it's very, very experimental and demented, quite unlike the rest of their stuff. Doesn't look like heard it looking at your post... it's not for everyone, you'll either love it or hate it. I lub it!
And I agree about Oh! Sweet Nuthin'... I've been listening to that nonstop lately. Awesome band, definitely one of the best ever.
''VU'' is another semi-album (odds and ends) that's worth checking out, more nice rock in the NON-White Light vein, you'd like it.

yeah, from what I gathered warhol kinda financed the whole shabang, like he wanted an aural art to express himself along with the visual. or something like that.
Most of Lou Reed's solo stuff is pretty awesome too. I think I might actually like his solo albums better that most of VUs stuff.

bizzarely enough i just started getting into them a few months back, The Velvet Underground was the first album i heard, and it simply blew me away. I played it for weeks, then eventually i allowed myself to take it off the platter and jam in White Light, that was still excellent, Lady Godiva's operation being a favourite. Then cam the first album and Loaded, sweet nothing is indeed an incredible track. The cd my mate made me up also had extra stuff on Hey Mr Rain and Ocean being amazing as well. SOngs For Drella, the Cale and Reed tribute to warhol is godd, has its moments, I had Dream being good, but a bit sentimental.
On the whole a wonderful band!!

Lady Godivas operation makes me nauseus to listen to (in a good way) i don't have a thhing about hospitals or anything but all the talk about machines that pump air, incisions, and those breathing noises, really trips me out. Love 'The Gift' to bits too, but the end makes me cringe.
I still gotta find me a legit copy of 'metal machine music' sometime though.

loaded is so mediocre, not too good aside from rock and roll, sweet jane and maybe 2 other tracks. i prefer the other stuff but i havent heard any other full albums outside of loaded but many individual tracks i have. the gift is a great one.

Don't bother with the 'VU' album..you can get better version's of "Im sticking with you" and "Ocean" elsewhere.
I recommend the 3 cd live bootleg album 'The Quine Tapes'. The highlights are on the second disc, with a song called Follow The Leader and a 38 minute version of Sister Ray.

Velvet Underground & Nico didn't really change anything about my taste in music but its good. my music taste was pretty much set in stone by the time i heard it though. Nico's voice is bad, but at least she's only on a couple of the songs.
Venus in Furs is the one on there for me.
to get perspective of what The Velvet Underground & Nico album (AKA the banana album, AKA Andy Warhol) is, it is their first album, but the record itself was more of an Andy Warhol art project (or so he thought) than a bands debut. Andy is not in the band and though it says he was the album producer, he did not "produce" this album the way we think of a record producer. he got a ghost producer to do all the audio stuff. Warhol was more what a producer or executive producer is to a movie, to this record than anything else. on one particular photo he seems to have played tambourine or at least held one up for a picture. i think this album is influential because its different, but its also a huge exercise in hype. it works the same way all of Warhols popart does, even though it is more than that.
