Sorry but too hard to just choose one, well maybe Masta Ace inc.'s slaughta house because this album has the most complicated and diverse beats and the lyrics are sublime and intelligent, very much anti-gunclapping talk and I like that but anyway here's my list :P :
old school: Big Daddy Kane - Long live the kane EpMd - Strictly Business EpMd - business as usual Eric B & Rakim - Paid in Full Run DMC - Raising Hell
new school: Masta Ace Inc. - Slaughtahouse Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Mecca and the soulbrother Mobb Deep - The Infamous Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu Tang Killarmy - Silent Weapons for quiet wars Black Moon- Enta da stage Talib Kweli & Hitek - Reflection Eternal

and monoid, yeah I was also thinking of putting that illmatic album in the list but it was getting a bit too xtra large so I had to leave it out. No question about his lyrical skills though, and of course the beats on that album couldn't go wrong when u have masters like dj premier large professor and pete rock on the board.
Might I add 2 more new school albums: I almost forgot Gangstarr! Gangstarr - step in the arena Gangstarr - moment of truth

Its a hard question thats like asking me of my favourite electronic album....hmmm I think I like..no let me see I think I never enjoyed album like I enjoyed GZAs - Liquid Swords back then when it was released 95, I think hip hop peeked from 92-96. But I dunno theres too many to mention but Liquid is easily one of my favourites, ah fuck it its the best hip hop album ever. ;)

best all-around hip-hop album? that's easy: outkast aquemini. that album has it all. every 'kast album is a classic but so far this is their best work. pick it up even if you HATE hip-hop. that's how mindblowing it is.

there can't be a truth of a best hiphop album cuz it's a case of perception being reality...
i do agree with..
beastie boys - prolly the anthology cuz there are good songs on lots of the albums
public enemy - it takes a nation of millions...
outkast - there last 3 albums have been magnificent
wu tang - 36 chambers
...all being pretty good.
my personal faves are...
those above ^^^ cannibal ox - the cold vein dr octagon - octagonecologyst digable planets - reachin' so called artists - paint by number songs el-p - fantastic damage fugees - the score cypress hill - self titled
i'd have to say theres way too much politics in hiphop (as theres is in most music), i dont appriciate all that bling bling shit but in the end it's the music that counts, n if someone makes good sounds that would have to overrule any silly image they have when considering spending my money on their lp.

i find this very remarkable..
i don't like hip-hop myself at all, and honestly i never would expect people who like IDM or other electronic music to also like hip-hop.. is there any link or similarity between those types of music? (apart from envane's first track..)
i'm not saying it's bad music or something.. i just don't like it.. and it surprised me that so many here do like it

for those that dismiss:
i don't think whole genre's can be dismissed, there are so many blurred lines now and theres SO much music out there, it's impossible to not experience n hear as much as possible, the most common way people get into music is by hearing something that is similar to what they already like so it's easily acceptable, a metal song might be techno influenced, or a dance group might inspired by george clinton, the lines blur... and on genre's, i'm not sure whether they stop musical growth or aid it?
theres too many good sounds to stick to just one...
it's about experimenting n being open minded. aren't the words IDM and experimental linked very closely anyway?

just thought i'd bring up a quote of mine: "and about tastes, thats just how it is: people have different tastes, and no one listens to "the right" music. there's no such thing. different people like different stuff and thats just how it is. you can't label some one wrong for liking something you don't. "
i like atmosphere too, i've been digging god loves ugly lately, and my friend gave me some dialated peoples. pretty nifty.
