"honestly i never would expect people who like IDM or
other electronic music to also like hip-hop.."

Wow.

As for myself... I do like hip hop, but I haven't got many
albums. Two, to be exact -- 36 Chambers and The No Music by
Themselves. One of my friends has a bit more though, and I
really liked Blazing Arrow. Blew me away actually.

So yeah... I'm looking over some of the posts in this thread
for ideas on what to check out next.

i specifically remember listening to the dead prez album and
thinking about certain lyics that "they're even talking
about the corruptors, their just talking white." that was a
while back though so i could very well be mistaken. i'll
just wait to hear it again sometime before i judge them
further. damn fine artists.

i can understand not feeling the anticon stuff, but there
are quite a few releases from them and to label it all as
pretentious seems a bit pretentious to me. is it actually
that you just don't like them (i.e. "not your thing" vs.
"pretentious crap")? have you REALLY listened to their
music and the intent behind it? each artist on anticon is
quite unique and some may be prentious (sole?) but hearing
you write them all off as pretentious is to me a bit like
your defensive reactions to stupid comments about bjork from
people who don't know much about her. i especially cringe
at calling doseone pretentious. aritsts can't be serious
these days? they can't deal with personal issues in their
lyrics rather than mass cultural issues?

"they certainly don't address all the problems that i see in
the world."

you have to admit that addressing all the problems is not a
requierment to be a good rapper. nobodyndoes that. and
just because one doesn't address problems in their lyrics
doesn't mean that they don't confront and face problems in
the "real world," day to day. i'd hope you might someday
consider that some of the anticon crew might be legitimate
good artists (a few are great imo) whether you like them or
not.

i'm just getting into anticon, it appears sole has a bit of
a reputation for being arrogant n pretentious - i havn't
heard him enough to know...

i really like def jux though, el-p, aesop rock, rjd2 n
cannibal ox are all very good, think mr lif is next up on
the list.

offline jupitah from Minneapolis (United States) on 2003-01-07 12:28 [#00505364]
Points: 3489 Status: Lurker

sole is a bit pretentious, depending on which song you're
in, though most of that rep is based in his battles with
el-p i think. a lot of his music is just goodhearted love
for hip hop, and the occasional statement that stands out as
quite mature in hip hop, always a breath of fresh air.

anticon may never interest you, but i recomend deep puddle
dynamics to all hip hop fans. it's classic.

yea i'm not (and i don't think i was before) calling the
whole clicque pretentious, i'm just telling you the vibe i
get off them when i hear their songs. i mean i feel like
they're the type of people i've been around for years.
truthfully i've never heard a full album by anyone on
anticon. is buck 65 with anticon? i was gonna download
square to check him out.

you have to admit that addressing all the problems is not
a requierment to be a good rapper.

of course not... and i don't mean to make it seem like
that's all i listen to either. i mean, one of my fav groups,
outkast, have a perfect balance between the serious and the
amusing. and del is pretty comical most of the time.
pharoahe monch has plenty of fun with his songs, as does mos
def, etc. but some people on here would prefer to think of
hip-hop lyrics as trite and predictable which they're not
(necessarily).

and nigel how do you afford drugs but not cd's? and aren't
you just a couple years younger than i am? how can you have
no money d00d?

old school:
ATCQ- Midnight Marauders (and yes, i realize it isn't THAT
old school... it's more golden age or something.... but it's
probably my favourite older hip hop album)

new(er) school:
Quasimoto- the Unseen

I have hardly bought any hiphop since the scene died but
there's still the odd worthwhile release.

A lot of my favourites have been mentioned but everybody who
isn't a cunt should buy Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical
Beatdown to prove it. It's classic!

Another vote for Enter the Wu-tang here.

honourable mentions: NWA:Straight outta Compton, De la
Soul:3 feet high and rising, Jay-Z:The Black Album.

I'm going by the traditional definition of hip-hop, so
excluding people like Shadow and cLOUDDEAD. Otherwise the
list would be a lot longer

i have only recently got into hiphop.

i have been listening to the clouddead 10" things and ten,
and book of human language by aceyalone, apc, plus some
magnificent finnish hiphop. it's amazing when you start
really concentrating on how these mc's use their voice as an
instrument. but i don't like music with a 'laid-back' or
pretentious sound so i guess there will never be too many
hiphop artists for me to like

i have to say that i lolled on earthleakages comment on the
top of this thread. el-p will always make me think of
emerson, lake and palmer.

Dead Eight -
I used to listen to almost nothing but hiphop until about a
few years ago when I realised that I couldn't possibly care
less about any of the new releases. Nas was clearly on a
downhill slope after Stillmatic, Wu-Tang were going nowhere,
Redman the same... Rawkus fell apart and Talib Kweli put out
a very bland album, Mobb Deep went soft, Eminem signed 50
Cent. All the underground hiphop is too pretentious, or
talentlessness masquerading as innovation, and everything
nearing mainstream is idiot fodder in some capacity. There
hasn't been a new artist worth the time of day for years,
the only really good albums have been old folks like Beastie
Boys, Ghostface, Masta Ace.

Thats what I think anyway.

For me race doesn't matter. Its all about content and skill.
Just because you're Chineese doesn't mean your kung-fu is
strongest. I do think cultural identity influences the
subject matter of rappers which is great cause you get a
variety of different perspectives when they 'keep it real'.
I do find I relate a bit more to the introspective lyrics of
white rappers like Sage Francis and Alias and Aesop Rock.
But then there's Vast Aire, MF Doom, Gift of Gap, Lyrics
Born, Anti-Pop, and my all time favorite, Illogic. That
guy's the top dog in my book.

eh, way too much hiphop to narrow it down to one.

mos def and talib kweli - black star
common - resurrection
the roots - things fall apart
de la soul - stakes is high
souls of mischief - 93 til infinite
dr. octagon - dr. octagynocologyst
beastie boys - pauls botique

i'm really into early 90's hiphop, so i'm a bit biased as
i'm sure you can tell from above...
