best hip hop album of all times?

well i'm being facetious when i bash white rappers... i
mean, i'm one, and i think some of the best rappers out
there right now are white. but there's truth in jokes. i
think a lot of educated white hip-hop listeners aren't being
exposed to some of the most gifted BLACK emcees. it's not
that one race is inherently superior or inferior to the
other (though it's obviously a genre invented by blacks,
like every other genre outside of classical music), it's
just that whites have such a natural advantage in getting
exposure because of their skin color (it's a white man's
world) and i feel compelled to try to equalize some of that
by recommending mostly black emcees who are just as
intelligent, funny, thoughtful, and creative as the white
heroes (i almost made a "white power!!" joke when
anticulture recommended def jux and anticon a moment ago).

since most of you are liberals and obviously you like fierce
beats, BUY (if you download it first, buy it later) dead
prez's 2000 debut let's get free. (more info:
www.deadprez.net)

the new common album (electric circus) would also be
huge with you guys if you gave it a listen.

i dunno man, i don't like common that much. all though all
i've heard is that song on the mtv where he loves a deaf
girl...

but i did like that song where he talks about hip hop as a
girl.

i'd have to say the problem with intelligent/clever black
mc's, well, ANY intelligent mc is that america doesn't want
that. they want violence and shit about ho's and what not.

BLUNTZ AND FOTIEZ IS FO SHIZZY
etc.

creating thug america an such, where no one respects women.
it's pretty disgusting.

i've never been really keen on hip hop, but i'm definately
more into it lately, since i've been exposed to more
intelligent hip hop.

you judge an artist on one song? and do you judge the song
on the music and lyrics or the video? you know better than
this nigel....

you're right tho. most white hip-hop fans want some "nigger"

yea, but, like, didn't you read when i said the new
common album (electric circus) would also be huge with you
guys if you gave it a listen
? i know you have access to
mp3 downloading and online and in-person stores... it's a
highly varied album, don't judge by one song. people need to
hear that album, preferrably in its entirety.

fantastic damage is a damn fantastic album for the
ages.. great gritty techno style production and some
interesting lyrics ("deep space 9mm", "stepfather factory").
but the production on common's new album by jay dee,
?uestlove, and james poyser is JUST as futuristic and
mindfucking.

i said what i said with the dread n-word because i feel--and
there's ample psychological theory and literary evidence to
support this--subconsciously, whites don't want to see
blacks on the same (or higher) level of intelligence as
whites, and they certainly don't want to acknowledge
their problems (see "police state" on let's get
free
). that's why ja rule (come on, MURDER INC.?!) and
nelly are so popular, and why us middle class whites listen
to so many white rappers and trick ourselves into thinking
they are the cream of the crop, and marginalize most hip-hop
by what beats are the most slammin ("the dumb are mostly
intrigued by the drum." -gza). no offense nigel. i do it
too. we all do. and i'm not suggesting everyone get solemn
and listen to radical hip-hop, but i think it's time some of
us stop ignoring pertinent lyricists..

heh, my thing about the good/bad niggaz was a quote from
some mtv show, his dad was an older white guy who was trying
to be a white rapper, his kid said that to him and told him
it was wrong or something.

didn't the neptunes do some work on the new common album
too? my friend had the little booklet in the bathroom (for
some reason) and i was looking through it.

no offense taken, travis. i definately listen to tracks for
the production for the most part, but like i said, i'm
trying to be more open to hip-hop.

"Public enema"

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2003-01-06 11:37 [#00503744]
Points: 14550 Status: Lurker

yea the neptunes did 2 tracks: "come close" (the one you
heard) and "i got a right ta". everything else was done by
the soulquarians (?uestlove [the drummer of the roots],
james poyser, and jay dee). when i say this album is
mindblowing i'm not referring to the neptunes' production,
as much as i love them. they turned in two great retro
tracks: "come close" is an homage to classic a tribe called
quest (especially "bonita applebum") and "i got a right ta"
is basically hip-hop's version of the biker film easy rider,
with common utilizing the old school flow of his friend
sadat-x of brand nubian. everything the soulquarians did is
futuristic psychedelic rock meets new age meets cutting edge
hip-hop, with homages to classic rock on "jimi was a
rockstar" (where common makes his singing debut with his
wife/girlfriend erykah badu), 20s jazz on "i am music"
(where common raps under the guise of music itself), and
soul music on the final track. i'm not going to say "check
out so-and-so" cos i think people should listen to the album
straight through.

and i know you were kidding about that nigga thing but i
just wanted to make a point to everyone here who listens to
hip-hop.. i'm glad you're giving it a chance

all this mention of the wu, and no note at all of Raeqwon -
only built 4 cuban lynx? I thought that was one of their
tightest releases. of course 36 chambers stands out the
most because it was so very different from anything comming
out at the time.

and, I just skimmed lightly over the thread but, could I be
mistaken in that there is no mention of A Tribe Called
Quest?! both Midnight Marauders and Low End Theory are
classic hip-hop albums.

titsworth, i understand, there are plenty of black rappers
who don't get the exposure they deserve. it's not that i
don't listen to black hip hoppers, it's just that my
favorite albums happen to be white rappers. it might be
cultural. i relate more to slug (it helps that he raps
about my hometown in nearly ever song, no doubt) and doseone
than i do to talib kweli and p diddy (only a joke, i know
puff doesn't represent real hip hop:). even still, i think
talib kweli is one of the more gifted emcees around.

dead prez can border on racist in some of their lyrcis, but
that's a serious funkin album.

digable planets

i'll have to second those classic tribe albums (what would
be my penal cord if it wasn't brown?!).

roygbivecore, i'm too fond of god loves ugly... have you
heard the previous two? overcast is what got me back into
hip hop after having lost it. it's a classic. lucy ford is
imo slugs best work. it had to grow on me. i actually
thought it was mediocre and inferior to overcast when i
first heard but i was delusional.

cuban lynx is THE best WU solo album no doubt. Glaciers of
ice being my personal fave on that one.
Lyrically, Killarmy always holds my attention with every
rhyme they drop, each having a voice and choice of words
combined with perfect timing wether on or off-beat they are
the dopest mc's out there. It's not hard to visualize what
they have in mind when they are on da mic.
I personally think it's a bit strange to claim white rappers
get more exposure then black rappers. Until eminem came
around it was pretty much unthinkable for a white male rap
artist to break thru, and that was not all that long ago.
Still, when I put on MTV or sumthin, most rappers I see are
black, and logically so because that's where the source the
scene lies.
It's logical that Nelly or Ja-rule or whatever gets more
attention then let's say Mobb Deep, because the lyrical
content of Mobb Deep is just not meant for any general
audience.
I got so much props for their infamous album and the hell on
earth album, but seriously, I would also be shocked to turn
on the radio and hear G.O.D. ptIII playing with full intro
in the afternoon.
I can go as far as to even think that naming ur label Murder
inc. is going too far, as this is subconsciously influencing
the teenieboppers who are bouncing merrily on some soft R&B
track with some thug(wtf?) edge to it. Some woman singing
about love this and that in her video, and in the background
theirs this huge board that has murder inc. emblem. How
fitting (NOT!).

i think cuban linx is a little overrated myself, but it did
set the trend for all the mob imagery in hip-hop today, and
rae certainly has mad skills. i'm just more into gza's
imagery and wordplay, ghost's and rza's flows, and odb's,
well... odbness.

N.E.R.D. do have a 2nd album in the works.. perhaps coming
out this year. i have 1/2 to 2/3 of a demo version of
"locked away" which they
performed on tour. i have no idea how the mp3 ripping group
(tAS) got it. i prefer the live version of it for now.

i don't think DP are any more racist than the life
(experiences, situations, conditions) they're writing
about... it goes with the territory. i don't think they've
ever said "whites are the enemy". they've said in interviews
they're down with whoever's down with the cause. it's just
that the people who make the decisions that affect us all
(in so many negative ways) happen to be whites in positions
of authority (the government, the police, record label
execs, club owners, employers, etc.).

i know it's important for people to listen to rappers that
seem to reflect their situations. perhaps i get so much more
out of black rappers cos i grew up in a black neighborhood
and have black friends (not to suggest that you don't). as
for the high intellect and esoteric subject matter i've
benefitted from schooling these last several years, to me
it's hard to disassociate that with some of the pompous
pricks (mostly rich kids who are full of themselves) and
that's how i perceive anticon and a lot of other white
rappers: showoffs and snobs. so it's not like i don't get
it, they just have negative associations with me, and they
certainly don't address all the problems that i see in the
world.

i totally forgot about De La, seems typical but i love 3ft
high n rising the mostest of their stuff.

on the subject of race etc, for me it's about the sounds
coming out of my headphones, i can't really relate to much
music about being down n out etc because i'm relatively
lucky when looking at a wide perspective, n i don't
naturally swing either way but thas prolly cuz i'm mixed
race...

i didn't know anticon were all white doods, well i sorta
knew but not really.. from what i've heard, their stuff is
much better when they group up rather than the solo
albums... but thats only from what i've listened too, which
isn't a huge amount...

did anyone hear that the fugees might be getting back

i didn't hear that about the fugees, that'd be cool. anyway,
i'm middle class myself, but i don't have a lot of
possessions. i'm lucky when it comes to education (best $
can buy), food, and shelter, but as for entertainment stuff,
as the "i-tals" put it: fuhgettaboutit. and cos that stuff's
never been lavished on me i've grown to not care about the
latest clothes, game consoles, cars, etc.

so regarding "down and out" lyrics, i can't listen and be
like "wow that's just like me" (except i can't get a job)
but i can still relate to it cos it's what i see and it's
what i feel is an important issue in this country and around
the world.

but it's important to stress that not all blacks are "down
in out" (it drives me up the wall when my white peers make
jokes about blacks living in "da ghetto") and likewise, not
all black rappers write about being down and out. i listen
to an album like mos def's black on both sides and i
hear songs about how blacks invented rock music (no shit),
how important african roots are or should be to the black
american, party songs, songs with shocking but true
political statistics ("mathematics"), tales of racism, love
songs, lyrical showing off, and alarming trends that will
affect us all severely years from now ("new world water") --
and that's just ONE album.
