It's up to the artists, I don't want to publish exact sales figures if they'd rather keep it secret.
But on average this year (last 12 months) cd albums have sold 800 copies. Our best seller in last 12 months was The Cosmic Forces Of Mu which sold 2217 copies worldwide. just over 12 months ago the Slag Boom remixes cd did very well at almost 3000 copies.
The average earnings of a Planet Mu artist (from sales royalties, not their real jobs obviously) is £800 per album ($1190) which is the royalties on 1000 sales. But I usually give them an advance of more than that.

well, as long as the music stays the same pretty much. there's a lot of mainstream artists who have completely changed an image or the sound and i know that it wasn't an evolution of music, but an appeasement for culture to make a buck.

£800 per 1000....that 80p per CD...
Now, I know that's a pretty standard rate but surely there's a different way to play the game so that artists get more than >10% per CD...
Shops, I guess, buy from Mu at 50% of retail price so I'm suprised Mike P doesn't make Mu just a Mail Order business....at least they'd be able to keep more of the cash for the artist even if they didn't sell as many....probably a lot less headaches anyway...
Or bite the bullet and start releasing MP3 albums that can be downloaded on a track basis...maybe some sort of subscription model or micro-payments would work...
Physical media is a dead horse nowadays and moaning about it isn't gonna sort this problem out...

My Grandmother could find mp3's. I think that you will have to make a value judgement on the ethics of downloading them. I only use them for demoing purposes as I like to have the original.

If I had more money (which I don't), I might buy electronic albums.
In the future, I may... and if not for MP3s, there would be NO chance that I'd ever buy an electronic album... well, not MUCH of a chance. I would like to have the CDs, but I'm not going to spend money on THEM when I've got more important things to think about, and when I can hear them on MP3 anyway.
If it wasn't for this site, I wouldn't have blown 50 bucks on Drukqs... they wouldn't have got not one red cent from me.
