Is WARP still dominant?

is it still THE big label in idm-ish music? or has another
label taken over the role warp once had? if so, which label
would you consider being dominant at the moment?

i think warp is still on top, but they seem to be falling a
little...

Oh yeah. The new ATP? ROCKS. I didn't like their ep at
all... but this new cd rocks my world...

"That is my cd. I sampled statid from my Victrola and
processed the sounds. It is called Tronman Stigmata."

Warp are dominant, mainly because of their established
acts.

Acts AFX, []pusher and of course Autechre, but other than
those three I listen to nothing on Warp.

The other artists that have come after BoC, Prefuse73 etc.
etc. do nothing for me. So I look elsewhere.

I've noticed that the majority of fans of certain Warp
artists seem really disappointed with the latest offers:

Aphex Twin - Drukqs (50/50)
Squarepusher - Go Plastic (almost everyone thinks it's crap,
apart from Track 1 of course)
Autechre - Confield (too weird say the fans)
Two Lone Swordsmen - Tiny Reminders (ok, I only know one
person, one of my mates, but he's got almost all of TLS's
output and he hates Tiny Reminders, Stay Down is his
favourite)

It seems only BOC have met the expectations of most of their
fans with Geogaddi.

And when the fuck is this coming out???

02.02.01 (Nightmares On Wax)

IN THE STUDIO

After putting a funky mix together for the DJ kicks series
last year, George is now working on tracks for a new LP
which will be out this year.

i think mille plateaux imperia is no1 at the moment..

go plastic - i love it and a lot of people here and that i
know love it
Confield - Takes a bit of listening really. But very
rewarding after a while.

haven't heard any artists on rephlex besides the obvious so
i would think they are pretty fucking importante.

offline joakim from Norway on 2002-05-01 19:28 [#00202743]

i still think that warp is the daddy when it comes to "idm"
music. i mean, they've got the most important artists in
this genre under their wing (aphex, autechre, squarepusher),
and their latest signings (chris clark, prefuse73,
brothomstates) are really ace. especially clark and prefuse
are brilliant.

i also feel that planet-mu and rephlex are closing the "gap"
though. planet-mu with some awesome output lately (also
brilliant stuff around the corner) from nautilis, venetian
snares, hellfish etc. rephlex is also closing in on warp. i
mean, with artists like ovuca, bogdan raczynski, global goon
and the like in their rooster, it would be wrong if they
weren't way up there.

i think these three are the biggest, leading labels in
current electronica.

really interesting smaller labels are appearing though, with
neo ouija, m3rck, sonig are doing great stuff, as is mego.
city centre offices and defocus are also producing quality
electronica.

it's exciting times for the electronica fetishist :)

i dont know . i'll wait till aftr the magic bus tour 2 make
up my mind . thay're comming my way on the 31st of may.
plaid are head lining.
deffinatly BoC have put out the best albums in while for
them. if nothing elce thats strong enough for me. they are
by for the best , and most interesting band arround now.

BoC hmm i got that music has the ... album and it good but i
hav to listen more really to hav an actual opinion!
As for drukqs,i liked it twas v.emotional which i like, from
eerie to sweet and thought provoking to mental.Go Plastic
rules imho u need to listen to it alot v.inovative ideas
i.e. using clicks for beats and making u consentrate on low
volume sounds then frightening the shite out of u with
explosion type thingys etc
Autechre i hav yet 2 discover along with v.snares who i got
a foo mp3s and is quite gud.
Im most looking forward to some afx, ceephax and []pusher
albums offa rephlex which shud rule the roost im guessing

Wow, that's not right. No one mentioned Plaid. Tis a shame
they get overshadowed by afx, [], and ae. And TLS are very
good.

Warp IMO is the dominiant one.

Also, there's other labels out their with quality, Worm
Interface is one of them.

warp is still a heavy-weight but it ain't the champ: planet
mu seems to have more consistantly good signings/ releases
than warp which is hit+miss lately. rephlex is being
rephlex, bubbling under all the time being popular but
rarely influential. certificate 18 is meant to be good
(pilote is on his way up) but i think individual artists now
forge the way forward cos the scene has too many labels that
release 90% dross. in london i think shops are becoming more
powerful than labels cos they seem to pull in low-profile
gems you'd never here of anywhere else (ambient soho R.I.P.
and rough trade)

well planet-mu releases a whole lot more material than warp
lately, that's for sure. warp seems to be playing it safe.
i think they will release something completely new and
refreshing by the end of the year. they really should.

all very good.

A few years back Warp was easily the best electronic label,
but the last few things I have bought on Warp records have
been really very average: Brothomstates' 'Claro' is very
wishy-washy; 'Drukqs' is good, but a hard album to listen
through; and Richard Devine's album, whatever it was called,
was a heap of shit. BoC's new release is great, but I think
that Warp is probably nearing the limit of its uselfulness
to music; all that is needed to destroy it is a decent,
credible rival.

I actually think Warp are more dominant than they were 5
years ago, they are breaking (slowly) into more mass market
appeal, getting into adverts etc. Their music is IMO more
accessible and they are tapping into this resource. Whether
I like this or not is a different matter. I mean, be
serious, there is NO WAY planet-mu or rephlex are in the
same league as Warp, even if they are getting bigger. These
labels don't release mainstream music, I think Warp has far
more commercial appeal and can only see bigger things.
Certificate 18 is bound to do well, Pilote has very
commercially appealing music, a bit like Zero 7 or
someone...you've heard it lots in ads, you'll hear it
EVERYWHERE! =)

i think youre right. warp does have a more commercial
appeal. but i cant compare the today warp to the 5 years
ago warp, because i wasnt into warp-ish music back then.

but is that a good thing?

hehe, notice the *think* =) I wasn't into Warp 5 years ago,
but for a label to get far more listeners, to a certain
extent I reckon its just as much commerical appeal as
quality material

Warp is still really good, they´re just getting a bit old I
guess. They´re playing a bit safe. Planet-Mu has been
really exiting lately, bringing back the ravespirit into
electronica. A good cure for all the Ae-clones.. Otherwise
I´d say that the whole Force Inc/Mille Plateaux-empire has
got a really strong hold of things when it comes to the more
serious, chin-stroking electronica.

there's still plenty of life left in ole Warp..I mean in the
past two yware they put out..kinda new acts like Richard

decent in my book..and whoever is putting down Tiny

album..glitch techno anyone?...

but yeah the competition is catching up..about half my IDM

the real question is... is so-called "IDM" getting mature,
its not like the early 90s anymore? people complain about
old skool stuff being unoriginal, but then complain about
other stuff being "too arty"... so what do people want?
alot of Reflex is based on classic house stuff (which people
complain is lame, RDJ is laughing at you guys), and then
there is some scholarly stuff which hasnt seem to make much
of an impact... i dunno, its a lot easier said than done to
say to Warp to just go out and get the next Aphex and
Squarepusher... its not the same virgin musical territory of
a decade ago... most people are going to complain anyway
because people tend to be assholes, and Warp is an large
target... at least for the past year, Warp has released some
very interesting records, but their artist base is aging...
and "IDM" has largely moved far away from most
dancefloors...
