[structure] question to musicians

how do you know how to structure a track ? it's some pain
in the ass sometimes.

you're developing this lush loop and you've been with it for
an hour and now it's time to add a bridge....or move on to
the next part of the track....or not ? how do you know when
and how to do it ?

we're not talking about idm super hit songs here cause they
just...happen - and/or are based on psycho-acoustic tricks,
innit ? just kiddin' [???]

how do you deal with it ?

apart from the times when "the sound just guides you
and you just know it" - thx, smart ass: I've made a dozen of
worldwide acclaimed idm hits myself. they just haven't been
aired yet.

tell me. teach me. help me. thanks.

The age old 'is this track finished?' thing. It's subjective
and to each his own way of dealing with it.

As for structure you shouldn't bother too much. Just make
something you wanna hear.

dont be precious about your loop. see if you can make better
loops. then string them together randomly. record automation
in live. then go back and edit what you've done.

that's how i approach things

I would have never guessed it was random!

I'm only saying this because kids might have a look in here
by accident.

Squark is bitter music and not fun! Not many people liked
squarks music because he wasn't very nice.

i was going to post that, but i decided to be nice. just
goes to show, there's no need to bother with that on xlt

p.s. it doesn't sound bitter to me, simply lazy.... like it
smoked too much weed, and consequently can't be arsed to do
anything but act like a roomba trapped in a corner. moving
back and forth a few inches at a time; never really getting
anywhere. vacuuming the same slice of carpet repeatedly,
until the battery dies. don't worry goon, i know the feeling

intro verse bridge verse chorus bridge short verse chorus x2
solo chorus outro .. pluck more at the verse and turn on
distortion and play power chords at the chorus. ask the
audience questions and make air guitar gestures during the
solo.

Anyway, this is a good starting point for
STRUCTURE (actually, it all I know).

hei robbie, i dont have an answer to your question (more
than the smartass one) but i sometimes after having a nice
loop i try to develop variations of it (mainly melodic)
until i find something different enough to construct a
second part of the tune. Then the structure builds itself,
from part 1 transforming to part 2 and etc...

it may also be helpfull thinking narrative, like pretending
to tell a story with the music, a travel or whatever. i once
did a tune that pretended to be the cycle of the water.
starting into a domestic house-toilet, then tune turning
into a more flowing opened style pretending into river, then
turning into more dark when arriving and diving into the
sea...

i dont really know if that is what you was asking, i guess
your were expecting a more musical approach... you can think
about themes ABC etc and structure in different ways. you
can make 4 themes B, E, I, and O, then structure them frist
O, then B, then B again, then I an finally E... ;)

i have an answer: just unroll the loop. copy and paste that
fucker a few dozen times. then delete stuff until there's an
intro. by the time you've done that, you should have some
clues what to do next, and doing those things will give you
more clues. if this doesn't help, give up and go to the pub.
