I'm interested in learning how to analyze music (Preferably electronic music) to understand how it was produced/mastered. Anyone have their own techniques they'd like to share? The mastering in AFX - PWSteal.Ldpinch's drums are interesting. |

i'd recommend getting familiar with the general principles (books, wiki, a class, whatever) and then just follow your ears. in general, it's a bad sign if you have to ask this sort of question. HOW DO I ANALYZE MUSIC? CAN YOU TEACH ME TO USE SYNTHESIZERS. you clod, it's not some magic password. no one told me how this shit works. i just sat there fucking it with while everyone was out chasing skirt and eventually i started to kind of get a clue, though not at all laid. the people that want a step-by-step guide are pretty much there to buy steve albini's books and blog posts, and use them to get laid. maybe if you take a lot of dissociative anesthetics you'll cut a good EP and burn out in six months (you can get laid off that for years probably), but there's not much a long-term career in there im afraid |

Well, I am just boggled with professional grade mastering. I understand that it takes a certain amount of skill behind an actual track, that sounds, "good". I know how to develop sounds very well. AFX - PWSteal.Ldpinch is quite simple when it comes down to the actual synths in it. I am not saying I can exactly replicate it, but I can directly hear what shapes were used and type of effects on top of it. When it comes to raw samples (drums) there is a large difference between mastered and not mastered. I think I am being a little to loose on what I am trying to ask. it's like asking somebody "How do I fuck your mother?" and you reply with "with your dick, bro" I appreciate the criticism, I really do. I feel like too many people have aspirations in BECUMZING A PREWDOOCER. And with the way things are going, many people are giving it a shot because of DEADMAU5, SKRIllEX,AFX...etc. It's all new and exciting. |

A variable sample rate, zero order hold DAC) and it isn't the same as in a VST, DAW or sampler (fixed sample rate with some form of interpolation). And It uses analog envelopes on the compressed samples, so the decay time isn't scaled along with the pitch. That is why samples suck for lm 1 sounds." |

Basically- to have the best musical/mixing/mastering ears- you have to have a huge arsenal, and by that, I mean you need huge experience with tons of software/hardware/analog/digital/ live instruments, etc. For example, there is no fucking way that a commoner could walk into a museum full of paintings and be able to tell how any of them were done, even the most simple. To be able to analyze the shit out of them, a person would need mad amounts of first-hand experience with basically every medium and surface, as well as conceptual understanding and solid grasp of composition, etc. So, you just need experience in the things you want to analyze. |
