Andrei Zvyagintsev's The Return
Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia
Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey

That people have actually heard of?

'Happiness', Todd Solondz film.

Blues Harp by Takashi Miike is very good, too.

And of course American Beauty.

just a few off the top of my head i think are outstanding
films:

Solaris - Tarkovsky
Onibaba - Shindo
Baraka - Ron Fricke (the only film i've seen so far that i'd
give 10/10)
Chungking Express - Wong Kar Wai
Ashes of Time - Wong Kar Wai
In the Mood for Love - Wong Kar Wai
Unforgiven - Clint Eastwood

AI is underrated I think, nowhere near as bad as people make
out

I used to love Lord of the Rings and I still think the first
one is pretty decent, the next 2 aren't very good though. If
I had to sum up its faults very briefly I would say its 'too
loud'.

cuntychuck wants to be tried, huh?

Well, The Idiots is good. I don't know if anyone has head of
Blue's Harp, my favourite Miike film. I am sure people have
seen Audition, DOA and/or Ichi The Killer by Miike. It's
just that they are obscure films, not cos I am a film
buff... 'cos I'm not.

Storytelling and Welcome To The Doll's House, both by
Solondz are good shit, too.

Heard of any of these, CC?

If you know of some of obscure ones, please tell me. I love
that shit.

I'm surprised to see someone pick up Blues Harp, because
that movie is pretty great. It's not my favourite Miike
movie, but damn good. IZO and Happiness of the Katakuris are
in my top-20 films of all time.

So here's some kind of list, based on instant flash memory
and people's suggestions on the board thus far:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Lord of the Rings pt. 1 & 3
Solyaris
Happiness
Dr. Strangelove
Mulholland Drive
Braindead (Dead Alive)
Shaolin Soccer
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Strange Circus
Election (Hak se wui)

Do we count animations? in that case, I would add Akira,
Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poco Raccoon War and Nausicäa
to the list.

No, choosing one or three is impossible.

Apart of the big film in cinema history, one of the most
complete films and closer to me and my tastes ive ever seen
is Adaptation. I also love the feeling it leaves on
me when its finished after the big dense story with the
flowers and everything faster and faster and the happy
together tune... aaaah-mazing! highest punctuation in the
best movie/favourite movie ratio to me

yes, i've seen them all except blue's harp, im a big fan of
takeshi miike tho, audition is just... i mean, im not afraid
of needles or anything, but this movie just fucks me up. i
cant really be a big fan of takeshi miike, its not something
i generally like to watch - check out visitor q.

challenging (what? lol?) me on my homefield wouldn't be the
best of strategy, thats why im wondering why you mentioned
the idiots. its not one of triers best films, and are
considered a bit of a joke here in denmark - if you want
trier, you should go see epidemic, europe, breaking the
waves or the series riget (both 1 & 2).

i enjoyed happiness, haven't really been around his other
things too much. todd solondz is very big these days, being
a promising independent director with an already impressive
catalogue. looking very forward to his new film as well, i
heard it is going to star paris hilton.

Oh fuck! I forgot about Bubble Boy! that film is so casually
racist, it rocks ass!

I will try to find obscure stuff tomorrow, it's too late to
trudge through DVDs at this time.

I am pleased by the Miike and Solondz love going aroun,
though! =)

What are people's favourite parts of Happiness? I like the
Hoffman sex pest the most. The bit where he shouts at that
fat bird after she has been the first one to show him any
affection is so fucking excellent on so many levels.
Actually pretty much everything between those two is
awesome.

the three fucking utter wankest films i've seen on this list
so far:

Magnolia
Happiness
Adaptation

all completely terrible wastes of time, that pretty much all
suffer from the same problem. they are over hyped,
self-righteous, completely off-the-mark, art crap attempts
at exploiting controversy and making an audience feel
uncomfortable, and then trying to pull some bullshit
morality out at the end hoping you will think its genius.
what a bunch of fails. never understood how people bought
into this lame trend.
