are you pro-capital punishment or anti-capital punishment?
why?

it depends really.

i think its used way too much, and with out enough
evidence. like people who get charged of crimes, but the
trial isnt like an obvious conviction, but more because the
person is poor, and cant get a good lawyer etc.

but in some cases, like if we find the sniper in DC, and we
are 100% sure its him, then i say kill him.

anti.

simply said, it comes down to this:

you cannot say to someone who has killed a person: "you
cannot kill a person, it is bad" and then do that exact same
thing.

also (I've said this before in the sniper-thread), you can
only implement a capital punishment-system if you have a
judicial system which is 100% fool-proof. I mean, if there's
a mistake made you can't bring someone back from the grave.

I'm against, because I feel that someone who is fit to be
tried as an adult and sentenced to death is old enough to
have a huge amount of society's time and effort (education
etc.) invested in her/him.

I'd prefer to see some form of rehabilitation that would
allow us to reclaim that investment, like personality
wiping, or organ harvest.

Children, on the other hand, have very little invested in
them... it ought to be legal to terminate a child up until
the age of say three or four.

thought of another one:

how would capital punishment help? if I remember rightly,
murder figures haven't dropped in the US because of the
existance of capital punishment, so as a deterrant it
doesn't work..

what rests is, revenge. not good.

I agree that too many people get sentenced without absolute
proof of the charge, but I think more important, or at least
equally is exactly how qter puts it.

Whenever i read something about people who get the death
penalty it gives me a strange feeling. I feel like mankind
(as a species altogether) steps onto very dark terrain when
we decide to end other peoples lives.

Only a very sick individual would ever do something like
that --> a murderer. But if we then proceed to murder him...
are we really any better?

i say life imprisonment instead so they can live with what
they've done, it makes no sense to kill em, cuz what qrter
said, and cuz then they can't think about it if they're
gone.

there is no justice reached when a criminal is murdered by
the government. only, like qter points out, a sick
indulgence in revenge. the crime still occured and another
person is murdered.

it's amazing how many people respond to this avatar :-p
George Costanza must have really reached people on a very
deep emotional level! Someone should write an essay on him
or something... what is it about George? Do people recognise
a little piece of him in themselves?

And it's working out GREAT for me ;-) I'm starting to feel
more like george every day.

if the punishment is supposed to be seen as a deterrant
(which i presume it is), exactly what sort of deterrant is
death? what a cop out! intoduce 40 years hard labour, make
prisoners work for us, put them on a big wheel and make the
generate electricity or something.

I certainly recognise parts of myself in George. I was just
thinking about this (strange coincidence): I actually like
all of the 4 main characters on Seinfeld. normally you have
a favourite, but on this show it kind of switches all the
time. well.. maybe, Seinfeld himself is the least appealing
of them all..

Murder is illegal so murdering criminals who are allready in
prison should be too.

I can understand if the victim takes revenge as an emotional
response but this shouldn't apply in a justice system.

i tend to block out nasty things like this. that makes me a

jerry himself is by far the least-interesting character for
me. But that's cool. One of the characters needs to be a
little more neutral. If all the characters would have been
equally funny, it would have been too much. Often jerry's
reaction to something george are kramer does is what makes
george and kramer so funny :-)

And indeed i did choose george as my avatar because i
recognised certain aspects of him in myself ;-)
His life has never been easy, and yet he keeps trying to
make something of it... you've just got to admire that :-p

anti 100%, you cant kill anyone just because they killed
too. basically what most of you said already. people who
say they dont have an opinion should get an opinion on this.
if more people were against it we wouldnt have it anymore.
usa is the only country that has capital punishment(right?).
united states has to be the most corrupt country in
history.

usa is absolutely not the only country that sentences people
to death! Infact, other countries kill criminals much
faster, and for smaller crimes.
