fingers crossed!

it could be a great day for broadcasting - with both the
pope and terri gone, we might be able to get back to some
news worthy of our attention.

"Pope John Paul II has been given the last rites of the
Roman Catholic Church as his health deteriorates, a Vatican
source tells CNN."

Pope John Paul Given 'Last Rites' -Media Reports

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul, whose health
deteriorated suddenly on Thursday, has received the Roman
Catholic sacrament reserved for the sick and dying, Italian
media reported.

A Vatican spokesman said he could not confirm the reports
but Church sources said it was likely the Pontiff had
received the sacrament, given the precarious state of his
health.

The sacrament, which involves anointing the sick person with
special oils, was once called "Last Rites" or "Extreme
Unction." It is now known as the Sacrament of the Infirm.

The last time the Pope was known to have received the
sacrament was on May 13, 1981, the day he was shot and
nearly killed in an assassination attempt in St Peter's
Square.

That time the sacrament was administered by his long-time
Polish priest-secretary, Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz.

AGI news agency quoted an unnamed cardinal as saying the
Pope was administered the sacrament earlier in the day and
that he was in a "very serious" condition.

The Vatican said in a statement that Pope John Paul was
suffering from a very high fever caused by a urinary
infection

it just struck me -

we'll have to deal with weeks of coverage of the funeral,
mourning and inauguration of a new pope on the news now when
he dies.

shitehawk.

admire his courage and believes.

Yes he dedicated his life to living in luxurious opulance
whilst dictating how people should live their lives. He
deserves better than to have a bunch of low life message
board scum taking pot shots at him.

courage has nothing to do with it -

the only reason he is still pope is that the the catholic
church makes no provision for what to do when a pope falls
into his state, because the advent of modern science and
medicine is so recent. he may as well be in a coma. he's a
mere figurehead.

he's just being forced to remain pope, in this condition,
until he dies. courage has nothing to do with it.

neither do his "believes"....

wrong on both accounts. clearly a dying man must have
courage to carry on his life long beliefs despite ilness.
and the catholic church have strict rules as to what happens
if a pope falls ill - they carry on until death. why to do
think he's doing what he is?

exactly why i stated - because he's forced to.

also, why would a dying POPE - it's different to any old
dying joe - renounce his faith before he dies? what are you
on about?

how does it take courage for a pope to carry on his
LIFE-LONG beliefs despite illness?

you make no sense.

also, don't tell nacmat to shut the fuck up, as far as i
know, he's italian, and i think his contribution is
therefore very interesting

I think i'm with dobbin on this one to be honest. I'm so far
from traditional catholic beliefs it's untrue, but it is a
bit cruel to laugh at a dude in his 80s dying of a urinary
infection. I mean, the whole doctrine has some fucking weird
ideas (african AIDS epidemic, cough cough), but yeah, i
dunno. I think it's pretty shit to laugh at someone in that
condition. I feel quite sorry for him.

On one hand, i'd be saying "imagine if that was your
granddad", but with the influence the shit he spouts has...
so yeah, i dunno.

i'm certainly not laughing. i just want it to be over, for
the same reasons as the terri thing: because being forced to
leave the earth in such an undignified way ( in this case
being paraded in front of the public, unable to talk or
move) is very sad.

Yeah, pretty much... the whole thing is a bit harsh really.
If i knew i was a gonner, i don't think i'd want to spend my
time staggering out onto balconies and waving shakily to a
load of pilgrims. Give that man some pies and whisky, let
him die happy.

no-one is forcing anything, i don't think. so far as the
whole concept of religion in partucular catholicism (in
particular northerm ireland) continues to colapse, we will
all learn from these ridiculous hangovers from the past and
hopefully create a better future.

religion is a dying breed (no pun intended). intelligence,
self awareness and knowledge of history is the only way
forward. there is no point in mocking other peoples beliefs
but re-education, even in a small scale such as this, is a
small but important step forward.

everything hapens for a reason. read some satre, read the
bible, read the daily mail. see whats happeningm see why its
happening, and let great britain lead the world.

wow, im awesome :) michael howard, kill yourself now.

As the head representative of a system espousing some of the
most ridiculous (and fucking lethal, african AIDS epidemic,
cough cough) beliefs possible, i'd say it's fair enough to
say he was shit. Although i don't think there's much point
blaming one extremely ill guy for the failings of an entire
belief system.

I can't really see where ignorance comes into the equation.

i always thought this pope was fairly decent... i mean
obviously he's gonna have some ridiculous views, but he's
made a number of acknowledgements in the last few years (ie:
bible=maybe a metaphor, evolution not such a bad idea) that
are pretty important steps forward for the catholic belief
system... it's entirely possible that the next one could be
much worse...
