It is an amazing, sexy, fabulous little game. But, Mr. Murphy Law is clearly spitting pus shards at my face; I have a lot of university work, suddenly, just as this arrives in the post. Before, when this fabulous game was not in my hands (or any fabulous game for that matter), I had little work.
I want to drink Baileys and play this all day, damnit.

I always defended Nintendo's decision to stick with old school midi-based music in their recent Mario/Zelda/Metroid games, but the orchestrated soundtrack in SMG delivahs the goods.

it's like the game is constantly saying 'hey guys, remember when games were fun? no? well here's a reminder.' it has more magic and mystery and beauty and charm and pure fun in one little asteroid than can be found in the last ten years of videogame history. it's just so, so . . .

It is helping me fail my course.
It is beautiful, crazy, polished, abstract and hyper-imaginative. I haven't been blown away by a game like this in years. I'm only like seven stars in, but in those seven stars I've seen more imaginative gameplay twists and turns than most games have in their entirety.
It's like the more bizarre elements of the 2D marios mixed with Mario 64, but better. This makes a Wii worth buying.

Maybe I've become crap at games, but I don't find it all that easy. It's not that hard, either; it's perfectly balanced. I did find the last two Gamecube/Wii games piss easy, and that was to their detriment. This luckily doesn't suffer from the same fate, though of course it's not nearly as tough as the older NES/SNES Mario titles. But I can't complete them any more, so that doesn't bother.

The second Bowser Jr level is a right fucking annoyance: the one where you got to make your way to a flying ship and then fire shells at his one whilst he's firing cannons and those shark-bullets at you. I'm sorry, I can't remember the technical names any more). Took me about fifteen minutes to complete that level, and about 5 lives.
Also, some of the comet levels are a right pain in the neck. Still, I love the old-school elements--especially when it becomes almost pure S.M.B. platforming with fucked-up gravity. Genius.

Yeah, you're right about the old-school elements. I often suddenly feeling like I'm playing one of the old 2D Mario games during a "level" in this, and it is a fine moment.
The only disappointing thing about this game is how well it's selling. I've heard that it has underperformed quite badly in Japan and in North America. What is wrong with these people? Maybe if Mario shot lead instead of cute crystals into marine troopers instead of strange abstract creatures, and if the soundtrack was rock, and if Princess Peach was a HOT XXX Chick, it'd do a bit better in the West. Don't know why the Japanese aren't buying it, though; they're probably too busy on their portables.

411mania » Games » News Advertisment [Wii] Super Mario Galaxy Becomes #1 Ranked Game of All-Time Posted by Ramon Aranda on 11.19.2007
Someone actually beat Link.
For years and years, "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" (N64) stood alone as the #1 ranked game of all- time according to Gamerankings.com. It was thought as an impossible feat for someone to come along and knock it off it's perch. To the surprise of many, "Super Mario Galaxy" has now become the highest ranked game of all-time.
Galaxy which now sits pretty at an average rating of 97.8% tops Ocarina of Time by only .2% which is now #2 at 97.6%. Of course it can still change as reviews for Galaxy continue to arise but for the time being, we have a new champion. Congratulations Mario!
Stay tuned for 411mania's review of Galaxy in the upcoming week.

i never rated mario 64 that highly, and sunshine was a tad shit. i wonder if i'll like this... i'm a huge 2d mario fan, but 3d marios never really gripped me. well, mario 64 did at first, but that game got sort of annoying in the later levels. they weren't so much fun as fucking annoying pieces of shit, really.
i'm probably picking this up though, if only to actually make the wii purchase worth it, cause twilight priness certainly wasn't (and that makes me very, very sad as a zelda fan).
