(Wii) Super Mario Galaxy

Can anyone explain to me why the pointer shoots star bits
from above rather than from Mario himself? That's bothering
me for some reason. As is the size of pointer itself. I'd
rather have had a very small one rather than that big star
thing.

Apart from that, it's a perfect game if I ever saw one.

i have no qualms with the pointer jazz. i'm looking forward
to trying out the limited two-player mode sometime.

2-player is pretty cool--it means the other person can
collect all the star-bits (and also fire them at enemies),
which helps things a lot in crazy situations!

bad about it.

i have about 50 stars now, and i just dont see this game
getting any better. There are some frighteningly bad
controls (swimming, flying) not to mention the limited
camera possibilities, overly childish elements and boss
fights that are way too easy.

mario64 owns this game in so many ways. it's sad but true:

mario64 is the geogaddi of games, and mario galaxy is the
campfire headphase. In other words: not good enough, but
what can you expect after a number of brilliant releases?

The things about mario galaxy i enjoy the most seem to be
references to the old games. I think Nintendo is well aware
that Mario's prime days are over.

it's pretty obvious that, for whatever reason, you're
deliberately playing the game with the mindset that you're
supposed to hate it. i don't know why that is, but i guess
i'm sorry you're one of the five people who don't like it.

sincerely,
nintendo

what? read my previous posts and tell me how you came to
that conclusion.

on the other hand, it's pretty obvious that you are playing
the game with the mindset that it is supposed to be (and
according to the rest of the world it certainly MUST be) the
best game in the world.

i am enjoying the game. enjoying it a lot at certain moments
too, but i dont have my head up mario's ass like some
people, so yes i do see flaws in the game, and to be
completely frank: i am fucking fed up with people overhyping
stuff out of sheer boredom/desperation/feelings of nostalgia
and i dont know what else it is that makes it happen.

i've played it enough to say it isn't as good as mario64.
that doesnt mean i hate this game. sorry if you find that
offensive anyway.

You seem really upset towards the fact people are really
loving a game that includes bits with frighteningly bad
controls etc..

"i am fucking fed up with people overhyping
stuff out of sheer boredom/desperation/feelings of
nostalgia
and i dont know what else it is that makes it happen."

haha! Let people love whatever it is they love. Even if you
seem to have the master say on things, it's relative. Sorry
for getting involved, it's just that you come across as
rather bitter.

hmm, really, 10+ years is a long time, that's since Mario 64
was released, so I'd be careful with head-on comparisons...
I am hoping I'll love Galaxy as much as I did 64 (in my
opinion perhaps the greatest game of all time), but I also
expect it to do things differently and in some ways better.
The fact is, after Sunshine, and after the deterioration of
the Sonic genre (not to mention all the other half-assed
platformers), the world needed a perfect 10 platformer. I
don't think hype has much to do with it; observe the
lukewarm reaction to Sunshine.

I think the perspective will be saner in, say, 12 months, so
it'd be interesting to see what people are saying then.

but that's as much as I can honestly say before playing
actually the game!

Super Mario 64 has more than its fair share of childish
elements and easy bosses. I'd say there are bosses in Galaxy
which are harder than any in Super Mario 64.

Both games: 10/10

I'm onto 50 stars now--10 from being able to access my
'Loved One'. Been working the past two days so haven't had
too much time to play: played & completed the toy galaxy
(inc. secret star), that galaxy is awesome! I am not
looking forward to the 100-coin stars, which I'm guessing
are in this game?

Toy Galaxy is indeed great. This game brings me back to
childhood.

One thing: Why does your star pointer not shoot stars from
Mario? Who's shooting? And why is so big?

wow...this game has far exceeded my expectations completely.
I cant compare it to Mario64 since its 2 diff platforms, but
this is killer to say the least. I have a question though.
I am playing on an HDTV, and i was wondering if anyone out
there has the component cables could tell me if it makes a
big difference or not. I have read reviews that go in both
directions.

I'm using compnent cables and running it in 480p and it
looks very pretty. Older Gamcube games that don't support
this - even the ones that are usually very pretty- look like
ropey piles of shit on my HD.

Why do the stars not shoot out of Mario and instead from the
star pointer? Sorry, I'm obsessed with finding out...

offline optimus prime on 2007-11-21 11:22 [#02146476]
Points: 6447 Status: Lurker

the answer is actually in your question: it's because they
shoot out of the star pointer and not from mario. you can
think of it as you yourself assisting mario, which is what
you're doing, but if that breaks the fourth wall too much
for you and ruins the escapism aspect of the game then you
can keep looking for a more contextual and colourful answer.
just note that the two-player mode is your friend using a
star pointer to further assist you/mario.

"Well, that's it! Bowser will be defeated and you get to
view the ending to
the game. Enjoy it, since I'm not spoiling it for you. Just
try to burn
Mario's last line out of your mind. Or just mute your
television. You don't
want to hear it.

For beating the game, Purple Comets will now appear in
certain galaxies.
You won't like them."

Uh-oh.

I keep dying at the same bit.. you gotta hop along a slimy
section of sinking grates and moving platforms over lava,
dodging fireballs, then run along ice, then dodge twirling
arms of fireballs... I do that, and EVERYTIME I fall into
the lava and sink immediately. I'm getting so irate... I've
gone to jump onto the safe platform so many times and it's
just walked me over the edge and I've died. Urngh!

How much do you have to jerk your entire body around with
the motion sensing controller to play this? Or can you opt
to use the controller in a normal fashion if you choose on
most games?

its all pretty normal fashion... very sensitive
controller.... you dont have to go half way across the room
for the senser to understand what you're doing. hehe

No game really requires you to make silly movements... it's
optional fun. On Wii Sports, in the tennis it's fun to make
the exaggerated movements and to 'accidentally' whack your
opponent with your forearm, but it can be played sitting
down and just flicking your wrist at the appropriate time..
hmm, that gives me an idea... Wii Commit Suicide: Wrist
Slitting Edition
; the on-screen knife hovers along your
arm and you have to shoogle/the wiimote to slash at just the
right time... oh man, someone code that bitch
already!

Yes, I'll have to try the second option. It's utterly
ridiculous; it's such a perfect game and the star pointer is
hardly a flaw, but once I get annoyed at something like that
I can't forget it. I just play with the Wiimote pointing
fairly vertically so that the star pointer dissappears now
and only use it when it's essential (which it often in some
levels.)

That has to be played in real life because you have the
challenge of trying to overcome your annoying innate urge to
live and fear of dying, whereas the game is pointlessly easy
with no risk.

I don't understand people saying this is too easy. At the
beginning, it is easy but still very fun and satisfying
(because, for some reason, the easiness doesn't feel flawed
in the same way that it did in the last two Zelda games).
I'm up to around 45 stars and there's been some nicely
challenging sections towards the 35-45 mark. I've died
plenty of times in this, but never to the point of
frustration.
