The demo is up on Xbox Live and it's astonishing. But it's
not like there was ever any doubt. Playing it just over a
week before its release is a bit like beating off 10 minutes
before fucking Julie-Delpy-circa-1992, but I couldn't
resist.

It's so similar to System Shock 2, even down to the hypos
and the potato chips, but much more streamlined, with less
flipping back and forth into menus and different interfaces.
I'm not sure how I feel about that... it flows better, but a
demo doesn't scratch the surface of games of this depth, I
can only wonder just how deep it's going to be.
Micromanagement in games like this gets annoying and
unintuitive after a certain point anyway, storing all kinds
of miscellaneous shit on your person. Keep it simple stupid,
that seems to be the basis for this game's interface.

I'm also not sure about the enemies. They're a bit
over-the-top, I think I would have preferred a more subdued
opponent. But I suppose it's a nice contrast, their
screeching psychosis with the beautiful art-deco utopia. Or
DYStopia, as it were lolololol.

Anyway, yeah, what am I doing point out all the flaws and
question marks, this is a lock for game of the year, and I
only wish more game designers had the ambition (and budget)
to create worlds like this. I love it when designers craft
places like Rapture. You know, Shadow Moses, Black Mesa,
Citadel Station, et al.

this game is what finally sold me on the 360. other games
had sparked intrest, but nothing worth $400. but now ill
have to get one, which means ill have to get dead rising and
condemned and PD:Z and gears of war and FEAR. damn, ive got
more games to play than i thought

360 was a travesty and disgrace to the history of
videogames.

If I ever publish a game which i won't and have no skill to
even make the initial title screen of, I'll make it a kids
game with the title being an acronym of a curse word.

I just spent £800 on new computer parts which will be
arriving tomorrow. Needless to say, Bioshock should prove to
be an excellent stress test for it. I think the PC demo is
coming next week, so hopefully I will have built + installed
all my shit by then. Sorted! Can't wait to play it.

there's really something to be said for this game's
atmosphere and style... they took it to another level, it's
so intense.

Does this have anything to do with the mid-late 90s PC
sci-fi 3rd person puzzle/survival game (a bit like alone in
the dark) 'Bioshock'?

IE, is this game that you are talking about: a follow up,
sequel, or remake of an old 3rd person PC game in which you
play a cyborg who was exeprimented on against his will (or
is it merely a game with the same name). I don't remember
much about the game other than the hilarity of beating an
insane man to death with his own arm.

i remember that game.. wasn't there some dreadful voice
acting in it? i don't believe it was called bioshock,
though?

anyway, this is a "spiritual successor" to the system shock
game and has nothing to do with the game you're mentioning.

Is bioshock the new oink? I looked at the google video
review... yeahhh... what they don't show much of is the
heaps of irritating menu navigating, intruding cut scenes,
wandering around for the fuck ever with nothing to do
because you (way too easily probably) killed all the
monsters in this linear vicinity and can't find that one
stupid hidden area to go or thing you're supposed to do to
trigger the next linear scene, having a shit controller
right in the center of your consciousness at all times, some
shit puzzle elements and other time consuming non fun
challengeless crap, etc, all of which I expect to be there.
Glowing videogame reviews have as much credibility as the
media these days. The reviewer probably works for microsoft
in some elaborate tactical scheme they use to rig the deck
to make sure they get good reviews kind of like the tuss
albums. If I had this game and an xbox 360 right in front of
me, I'd play hell revealed for doom 2 instead.

The demo is pretty inviting, It makes me think of the french
movie "city of the lost children" with an horror twist to
it, wich is an incredible mix imo. I'm not a fan of FPS but
this one tend to be much more than that.

Speaking of film parallels, the lighting in this game often
reminds me of an Argento film. Such imaginative
relationships between color and light.

Artistically it's the best I've seen, no contest. And the
gameplay is great, I'll be fucking around with plasmids for
hours. The only question marks for me is the story, and
whether or not they can sustain the intensity for the entire
20something hours. They couldn't do that in System Shock 2,
which grinded to a slow halt. Hopefully lessons were
learned.

The nuanced storytelling style is excellent, the sound-clip
format with no cut-scenes is proven and immersive. And the
premise is great, but it wouldn't be hard to drop the ball
when you're doing something so ambitious.

I also hope the game is harder than the demo lets on. Normal
seems WAY too easy for a ''normal mode'' in this kind of
game. Of course Hard Mode wasn't selectable, and I'm only
going by what I saw in the demo, so there might be nothing
to this complaint.

Here's a little update for whom it may concern: Bioshock is
now available for pre-order and pre-load on Steam.

I just purchased my copy and currently have 23.2% of
Bioshock. I've got a fairly beefy computer, but my ram is
fairly slow as well so I'm expecting poor performance. I
don't mind playing the game at 640x480 if I have to, though.
I'm just glad the wait is nearly over.

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ at 2.4ghz, athlon 8800gts 640mb, 2gb pc
3200 ddr ram, soundblaster audigy 4 pro, 180gb SATA hdd. I
listed my hdd b/c SATA transfer data the fastest (aside from
RAID configuration) so it help with games. It's really not
too beefy anymore, now that I think about it :( Still runs
the games I play well though. (Half life2, GRAW 2, etc)

I suppose if one had always been a console gamer, and had
never experienced the joys of PC FPS gaming, then one might
feel that halo was nothing short of revolutionary. I think
perhaps it comes down to the individual's gaming history.

I'm not a big Halo fan, mostly because of its bland
presentation. But I do have to defend it, because gameplay
wise, it was definitely fresh and influential in a positive
way. There was no game before it that utilzed the
recharging-shields/health system so expertly, and it's no
coincidence that it's now a staple feature in the genre. The
flow of battle in Legendary difficulty, due to the VERY
strong AI and the dynamics of its shield system, had no real
precedent. The two-weapon system forces you to think on
the-fly about what you should carry and when, very unlike
almost every FPS at that time. The game was nothing like
Unreal/Quake/Counterstrike/Goldeneye/etc.

Console-specific, I think it was one of the first
dual-analog games, and certainly the best at the time,
pretty much every console FPS after it it just a variation
of Halo's control layout. The grenade system was especially
revelatory. Lastly, the Goldeneye effect, 4 or more dudes in
very close proximity, sweating and yelling and stuff.

The thing that sucks about Halo's gameplay is the level
design, again a lot of that is a result of its style, or
lack thereof. Great combat mechanics, but some of the levels
are so repetitious to go through.

''utilized''

Anyway, there's a reason why modern FPS games are compared
to Halo before anything else. And it's not because of its
sales. That doesn't mean it's the best though, even on
consoles, Resistance is like a weird hybrid of Halo and Call
of Duty, but better than both.
