Grinning Ape // An open letter to...

I came up with a really good name for this yesterday in the
car. But I didn't write it down and so I forgot. But it was
good, if pithy. However, this new title, "An open letter
to...· is interactive, so important these days, in that
you can choose your own recipient of the "open letter
to...". Here are some of my choices;

Donna Summer
Ambient Techno
The Funkmaster
Sesame's Treat
The One World Government
J.R.Hartley
The Cast & Crew of "Poseidon" (2006)
Time itself
The Pink Panther
Bill Drummond
Trust House Forte
Ed "Stewpot" Stewart

Seriously.

Pretty good. I know how much you love SAW 1, and it shines
through in the good way. The hi that comes in at 1:32 is
pretty unbearable. I can feel what you want to do with it,
but it kind of needs a filter to remove some of that ear
damaging high frequencies (at least it sounds fucked up on
my headphones).

I can imagine this as backround music to a documentary about
street kids. Like, the music fades down and a voice goes
"Jimmy has been doing crack for 4 years now, and sells his
body to older men for money" while theres a montage of
street lights and cars going by behind this sad looking lad
in rags.

Good variation in it as well. Doesn't become boring.

4/6 if you change the hi i'd say. Good work.

Dirty_P: I know what you mean, I like the filthy
snare / Hi hat (I don't even know what it is in the mix) but
it's a thin line between "hardcore" and "fucking annoying".

Cygnus: Of course, dear

Gwely: Under slightly different circumstances I'd
marry you.

I was trying to think of what this music reminded me of and
then I realized it was essentially Johannes' image of the
drugged out teens. I'm picturing a kid with the common 80's
John Connor haircut and distressed stonewashed jeans
shooting up in a back alley.. only all in dramatic slo mo.

Very dramatic, but not in a stupid way.. evocative. Good
work, as usual!

P.s. the hihat is definitely your dirtiest yet :)

I'm listening on low volumes here because people are
sleeping, but it sounds like most of the other sound goes
missing when the hihats get too intense. Maybe bring them
back just a little bit?

Other than that it's a nice track, but I'd prefer it with a
bit more of a change somewhere. Agree on the documentary on
drugs theme.

You are listening too quietly, Volume really is a KEY FACTOR
here, and I make no apologies for that, none whatsoever, and
I'm sorry if that upsets anyone. But I appreciate you
listening to the (top half) of my music track that should
conjur images of a dystopian future, ideally, or even
Derrick May's sock drawer, not so much anything to with
Drugssss.

I thought this track was excellent, apart from that annoying
hi-hat (which wasn't that bad; it just ruined my
enjoyment of all the other lovely sounds and intricate
gurgles a bit.) I especially enjoyed the opening section and
would have loved it to go on a while longer. Thank you for
the tune, sir Grinning Ape.

mixdown abit on the loud side, but god do i love this track
man. I feel you should go for "Sesame's Treat". Don't know
exactly why, but it makes both the least and the most sense

After all these tracks and mixed feedback.. I think if he
wanted the distortion.. the abrasive, cringe-inspiring
bursts we all know.. removed- that is, if they were
unintentional- he would have found a way to remove them by
now. Perhaps their continued presence should spark more
exploration of his motives.

Or, maybe he just can't be arsed to clean the damn things up

yeah, to be honest, i'm surprised at those comments.. i
thought this was the stuff we had come to expect from
Grinning Ape, ie "not a nice ride"?

The stuff I've heard by grinning ape is, for the most part,
very rough and jarring. i thought that was the point?

"Jimmy has been doing crack for 4 years now, and sells his
body to older men for money" - Brilliant

Good - The start of the track after the beat comes in, nice,
solid, listenable.

Bad - Distracting snare at 1.5 mins. Opening few seconds.

Ugly - Monoid

I take all your points very seriously, and to that end, I
have reworked it, rethinking my approach to JUVENILE
HARSHNESS, and instead expressing my sense of of personal
failure in other ways. I think it sounds a lot better now
and that everyone was right and I was wrong. Though I may
get complaints from the RSPB that some of the higher
frequencies are putting migratory birds off of their
course.

To the poor souls bereft of anything better to do I present

An Open Letter To... (Lilac Ink Mix)

And for those of you apparently living under regiemes where
access to the Grinning Ape website is judiciously barred,
why there's YouSendIt, or rather, I did.

What, you wrote a song for me? Ummm...

All joking aside, I'm actually listening to this song now,
and it doesn't really do anything for me. It's decent, but
the quality just isn't there in my opinion. I'm sure you'll
take that as me taking any opportunity to insult you, but
it's actually honest criticism, so take it as you want.

damn, your production and style is really evolving. this is
fucking superb, like a more refined but still soulful and
evocative grinning ape. wiser, more controlled. like a good
pot of coffee and some dark chocolate. fucking
lovely, especially those high pitched blips and the
"dropouts".

that new mix will be absorbed soon.

Big, can you do all your future posts spread out over 3 or
even 4 individual postings, and then it looks like my spam
is more popular than it actually is? And I even get to do
"bonus posts" like this one.

For those that don't "speak Big", pfs is Paul F Savage, who
sometimes records under the name pfs and his
music is very good and he asked me to put some on my site
and that's what I did. I hoped it was clear that the "pfs
music" wasn't actually by me as the last thing I'd want is
to be e-chastened by the Council of IDM for false
representation, something I think Timbaland is currently
embroiled in.

Oh Staz, don't beat your bandwidth, I swopped the "original"
