to this day i think his best track is swap, trigger off of
lipswitch. latest thing i liked from him was that one off of
cautella called arc-acid. and ofcourse asect;dsect was full
of good ones... asect:dsect was his fist 'diverse' album,
wasn't it?

i like his music because (to me at least) it is so
ridiculously hyperactive, and i like where he goes with his
beats & timing in certain tracks. when i got lipswitch when
i was like 17 i was all over it. id try to dance to it and
sort of almost die

i am not into his new 9.1 Surround Sound / HD-Audio /
Psycho-High-Production Value stuff. i think for his stuff it
doesnt really work. in my opinion at least. i like the sound
of lipswitch over all that because it's so fucking
bum-raunchy, gross/crunchy.. it has this under-the-gutter
personality to it

Generally, I find about 95% of his music to be quite boring.
Yes, it is technically great and can be a mindfuck to listen
to, but it doesn't necessarily make for enjoyable music.

What I really do like from Devine is his "proper" tracks
such as vecpr, floccus, itsuko, etc... though the autechre
references have been done to death, these are about as close
as anyone else has got to the magic of albums like
confield/lp5 for me. Still, I do think his music lacks the
character of ae's output, but that may simply be because
autechre have been around longer and covered more ground
musically.

I loved his remix for Enduser though.

Devine has a remix on Otto Von Schirach's "Armpit Buffet"
that should not be missed. It might be my favorite track of
his. That or Kepter off Lipswitch.

i mean he mentioned making a dvd about one year ago - i am
desperately waiting for this one.

i would also love to hear that stuff he made in a cinema in
16:1 surround - must have been blasting.

my absolute favourite track of his is still corina chirac -
i just love how there is this certain pad melody in the back
that just goes on and never comes to the foreground.

but i have to admit that i like this "ambientish" tracks a
lot more. they really make you feel like it was some movie
soundtrack and i love to hear other peoples thoughts or
visuals on them. my friend still has nightmares after
listening to them :D

i really love the person richard devine himself like his is
just devoting all his lifetime into not even music, but
sound. i mean he makes sounds for internet sites (halo 2) in
the morning, afterwards he tweaks some presets for
synthesizers for ni or ableton, the helps with producing
albums and still finds time to jam and make his own tracks.
wonderful person.

oh besides - for all those richard devine lovers - check out
EINOMA. they sometimes sound so similar i cannot believe
it's not another alias of richy.

i wonder if that 3lp "sculpt" thing is so rare or is it just
me who cannot find it? it's impossible to dig this up on p2p
for me.

oh and please don't search for his "polymorphic ep" i can
imagine that he kills every man who asks him about that ep

i'm just quite curious if he actually makes all that sounds
out of synths or if there are any recordings involved - i
mean some of the sounds just seem too organic for me to be
created digital.

the same goes for shapeshifter from the schematic label.
worth checking out too.

haha, i quite like the polymorphic ep actually. it is so out
of place compared to the rest of his material, but I still
give it a blast every now and then.

"
he uses both samples and synthesis, probably more often than
not granular sampling manipulation. On cautella one of the
tracks is a preset on the Kyma abused for literally one
minute unaltered, thats synthesis. The DVD has been on the
back burner for ages, i have no idea why hes taking so long
with it, lets hope once its done its a little more surgical
5.1 than his live show (which was just him masturbating with
a circular surround sound panner on nuendo with no rhyme or
reason)

haha, probably sarcastic but yeah the lighting the keyboard
on fire was the most anti climactic ambient attempt at being
a rock star ive ever seen.

autechre. i need afx copies, not ae's ones...

R.devine does not even come close to sounding like autechre,
man. thats just my opinion

autechre's much more precise, much more progressive. it
intensifies over time, richard devine hits peak intensity as
soon as you hit the play button. its like he does not care,
he's all like, "fuck you!" it comes closer to nokturnal
mortum, the gates of blasphemous fire or something like
that, its like speed metal

like, most of his songs are just based off of the kick drum.
its always the loudest thing throughout most of his songs,
and its what leads all the rest of the elements. and its
always like,
THdHHdRRUuduDUDUDUD-duDUDU-DOM-DOM-DOM-DOM
it's definitely much less time-oriented than autechre but i
think if your mood is, "man, i dont really fucking care. i
just want to hear some funky ass noise" then it does the job
so well. the man knows how to make good ass beats

sadist: corina chirac is a good one man, thats probably one
of my second favorites off of asect;dsect. i like it better
than itsuko.

the surround sound stuff i'm talking about has only been in
live occaisions lately and they haven't been anything worth
going to from what i've heard. hes been saying hhe was going
to do that dvd for years now.

brisk: i think it is like almost impossible to compare
richard devine and autechre. autechre is most definitely a
"thing". it has personality and style and it goes somewhere.
it exalts the listener. richard devine music is much more
ridiculous, much less serious and more about 'right here
right now'.

offline jackeroffer from Aruba on 2007-03-07 12:35 [#02059445]

yeah i maybe can see the old RD stuff being compared to AE
but not the new stuff. And whats wrong with people being
influenced by AE? imo it opens up for a more creative result
than copying APhex, squarepusher, or boc. The reason it
because autechre switches concepts from song to song and
even though they have a very distinct sound design aesthetic
(which is very hard to duplicate with as much style) each
song sounds distinctly different from one another imo.

i agree with your assessments on why Devine's stuff is so
pleasurable. Its like a sensory overload beat assualt. I
prefer his fast dancey shit that has so many sounds and
little fragments your brain cant even tell whats going on.

im not a big fan of his ambient interludes or beatless works
which unfortunately on some of his albums takes up 1/3rd the
disc

at the very least nobody sounds quite like Richard devine

its like Bobcat Goldthwait, he may be too annoying for some
people, but its undeniable his act was pretty unique and you
cant really compare him to anybody (even though i think hes
shit)

Speaking of Richard Devine does anyone have any live
recordings? I only have this one - Live @ the NYC Nesh Warp
party [22-6-2001] and I cant find anything else. Also if you
like his more ambient tracks check out his remix of Ryuichi
Sakamoto - Seven Samurai.

well i think its basically impossible to sound like
autechre. autechre does not even sound like autechre. every
song is sb&rb being a different new band and autechre is the
genre of those bands. thats been my point of view anyway

influence from autechre/afx/pusher is all over the place -
but it's much more than just a consequence of impression. i
think its most unfair to say that someones musical art is
only the consequence of an impression that was left on them.
as if a strong enough impression just kicks over the kettle
of creativity. the reason a positive impression even happens
is because of other positive impressions they've been left
with. the reactions to the music are all obviously connect
to one another.

if that was not true then one would find listening to
Drexciya, for example, displeasurable, and then pleasurable
at a ridiculous rate. like as fast as your brain could
forget that you liked what you were hearing.

it's like a chain-attack. one notices that people who hate
this kind of music are on other chains of pleasure. looking
for other stuff. it's all just what you're looking for to
satisfy those pleasure centers in your brain. thats why its
so asinine to judge peoples musical art, its like calling an
apple "foolish"

his stuff, well most of his stuff grows on you - at first it
is very dense and mechanical - very sterile - but it hits
you with its precision - i myself am mesmerised by the
precision in the music, its what draws me in - i do however
have to be in the right mood for devine. i just wish he
would release more instead of say what releases he WILL be
releasing, for instance where is that ghostly release? he is
starting to sound like phoenecia, where the hell is lewd
archives?? whats going on with producers from the us, their
output is dropping off to nothing.
