nin - year zero

After 6 years of hating on nin, I decided to give this album
a shot, just because I'm bored and need to hear something
new. I enjoyed some of it.

something about your avatar is vaguely saddening.

Just got it today.. after hearing a few of the tracks
online. I really like it so far. Too early for final
judgement but I find it to be a well-thought out and well
executed album, full of noise and energy. It still has
Trent's trademarks, which do seem a bit trite at times, but
then again some of that is what made me love NIN in the
first place and it wouldn't be the same without it.

If I respect an artist's previous work, and if their older
stuff has affected me in any noteworthy way in the past, I
think I owe it to them to approach their latest work with an
open mind.. and I actually think Trent's done a great job of
evolving his sound.

ditto. i really enjoy the sound of the album, heavy,
glitchy, sometimes funky, at other times ambient... also the
lyrics aren't of the "depressed Trent's diary" kind this
time, which is a good thing.

so far my favourite tracks are My violent heart,
God given, Meet your master (two funky ones -
especially the latter), In this twilight (beautiful,
one of Nine Inch Nails' best tracks in my opinion) and
The greater good (very strange, even engrossing,
relatively ambient-like track). Hyperpower! is also a great
intro, even though i prefer intros that segue directly into
the first song. the only (slightly) deceiving track is
Zero-Sum for me - but my mind may change about it.

I just listened to the great destroyer, and honestly it
didn't impress me at all. This is where I have issues with
people like Trent Reznor and bjork. They have some
interesting techniques for sure, but they are totally
derivative of other artists that will never get credited for
their ideas by the more famous artist. Ever. At least
Radiohead give credit where it is due.

I can show anyone here how to do the end for the great
destroyer in five minutes with reason. I am not kidding.
That kind of 'programing' is so basic and algorithmic, it
doesn't really require much work to set up at all.

The only track I enjoy now is me, I'm not.

good. but i like the first part very much.

Well, if you're talking about Trent's 'IDM'-ish elements, I
think he's given plenty of credit where it's due. I
remember interviews where he's specifically and glowingly
mentioned Aphex Twin, and he even released some Autechre and
Plaid(?) on Nothing Records..

Some of it's derivative, yes, but I think he's aware of what
he's pulling from. Just my impression..

By the way, I realize I'm somewhat of a hypocrite
considering I used to criticize Thom Yorke for the very same
reasons.. but with Trent it seems like his newer influences
fit better with his original sound than in the case of
Radiohead.

the new NIN material, as it has done since Deep, has
continued to disappoint me.

i've had a listen to the album.
first of all, the artwork screams commerical. what the fuck
is with that supposed "government warning" that's attached
to the back of the cover? just looks to me like he's trying
too hard to play the "this album is banned by the US
government - you MUST buy it! also, HYPERPOWER!!!!!!111111
lolz" card

secondly, he has stated in interviews that he's going back
to using modular synths and stuff a lot more, maybe he has
but he's over-processed it all in the computer so much that
it sounds like software.

also he's STILL using vocal manipulation on his vocals.
that's pathetic coming from him.

he has a damn good singing voice, and doesn't need to use
vocal manipulation. even if his vocals are a little out,
that's what makes it unique.

Ian Curtis wasn't the best singer in the world, but it was
HIS voice.

Rezzo has lost his edge. i used to really respect him. now
i'm slightly ashamed to admit to people that his music made
me want to make my own music

I slept on this album until yesterday (i pretty much forgot
it was out)... it's not bad. The first 3 tracks suck-- With
Teeth style, but the rest is actually really beaty and
condensed... looks like he's contiuning current the "IDM"
trend of smaller and smaller sounds.

It still has nothing on The Fragile or Downward Spiral but
whatever, those aren't easy albums to top.

my god, i just seen NIN live, i've been to plenty of
concerts but this has to be the best one i've been to! We
didn't get the cool projections because of the shitty venue,
Trent was pissed, but they made up for it in the
performance.

Year Zero has really grown on me, up there with the best
work he's done, the tracks work really well live, especially
great destroyer!

anyone heard of the new remix album coming out? sounds like
it could be good, fennesz, ladytron etc working on tracks,
