The second half on The Great Destroyer sounds like Aphex
Twin. Sorry.

I got my violence in hi-def ultrea re-alism.

he sometimes writes lines that are amusing when you break
them apart from the song.

I think he should do a "best of" called "Music for angry
teenagers who think they're deep and that no one else
gets it".

why do people expect him to do anything but angst? a
common complaint i hear is that Trent is too whiney and
pseudo depressed. but what the hell, should he start
writing uplifting melodic bubble gum pop about how he wants
to get married and make babies? Or maybe he should be
writing more songs about drinking top shelf liquor and
smokin' kind bud. of course, this would not be NIN.

I think he has evolved over the years, tried different
techniques and styles. This latest effort sounds NOTHING
like Pretty Hate Machine for example, but it still sounds
like NIN. he has also maintained his angsty roots. it's
why many of his fans started listening to begin with.

He hasnt really done that since 1994 Valor, I think that is
the problem for most of the fans. But I hear what your

im still waiting for the experimental aspects of this album
that he kept hyping up..... where are they? The second half
of The Great Destroyer is really good crazy noise but the
rest of it sounds more straight forward than anything he's
done besides With Teeth. When he said experimental i was
expecting something like Further down the spiral, Fixed or
the Quake soundtrack.

yeah, trent has so much money id be surprised if he didnt
own like every Buchla synth ever made.

i read an interview with him once in a pro recording mag
about how he was mad that he couldnt sync up 2 x 1.5 million
dollar mixing consoles called "Studer" because the company
had never had anyone buy 2 before. He was acting like a
little baby during the whole interview.

it's alright, i shouldn't have expected that much. i quite
enjoy NIN's older stuff, even with teeth has some really
good tracks (but half of it is sorely uninspired and dull).
this album's leaked tracks were probably the best of the
munch. i miss more melodic variation and more experimental
approaches, this is structurally pretty close to with teeth.
"meet your master" could have been great tune if the chorus
melody didn't just repeat but expand beyond the "faster" bit
into some different base notes, i have this perfect sequence
in my head but WAAAH trent. oh well, it's not offensive.
just "decent".

offline blobula from BElgraDe on 2007-04-07 19:45 [#02070384]
Points: 1253 Status: Lurker

after one not so proper going through (but with the
headphones and in the right mood) i conclude :

drum samples, rhythm machines, whatever...are the weakest
part of the album...but the synths, noises, electronic
production overall has some really on the point composition
within songs.

his voice isn't angry as on with teeth, which is a paradox
cause this album was announced as noisy and angry blah
blah...somehow i miss with teeth now BUT survivalism is a
perfect example of pop single...i've heard it once and few
times skipped through the video but it was only
seconds...and days after it's in my head...

i was very dissapointed when i heard with teeth for the
first time, but later i loved it, esp. the last 4 songs...

so this one run faster on the start i'll write more in next
weeks

after all , this is also an example of the fast written fast
recorded than even faster mixing....like the last sonic
youth...if you could merge WT and YZ songs and mix it for a
long time like downward spiral...then it could be a proper
new AND good album...

but Trent is fucked up more than any other clever guy on the
whole scene, so evryone should be lucky that he's alive.

my longest post ever btw

We are spoiled when it comes to hearin new fresh and
exciting sounds. The average person has never heard of aphex
or autehcre so NIN is really ground breaking to them.
Probably most NIN fans have never heard of them either.

Am I the only one who thinks 'head like a hole' is still the
best track NIN ever did?

Just like Loser is still the best track Beck ever did.(imho)

i assure you that even knowing aphex twin, autechre etc, i
still find some novelty, "fresh" and "exciting" sounds in
other music. idm doesn't have the monopoly of it. : )

the timing in Survivalism is interesting. he starts out
singing on the back beat but the chorus rocks it on the one.
makes it kinda difficult to sing along. so then i try
harder to sing along and pay close attention and now it's
totally stuck in my head.

· the "onkyo", "electro-acoustic improvisation" and
"lowercase" genres, with otomo yoshihide, sachiko m, keith
berry, bernhard günter etc... granted, different albums by
the same artists will sound similar and you don't need a lot
of albums from this genre, but you might never have heard
anything like it when you hear it for the first time. also
ryoji ikeda (quite different actually).
· coil (not new, but their catalogue is so large i
always discover new things & often surprising ones)
· irr. app. (ext.)
· saul williams, who i discovered lately and like very
much
· growing (album : color wheel), ben reynolds...
weird hybrid musics, with elements of electronic music,
post-rock and other things - assembled in a quite unusual
way
· since we last spoke by rjd2
· stankonia by outkast (not new either, but i
discovered it pretty late and still find it amazing)etc...

now aphex twin may still be amongst the best when it comes
to reinventing oneself and experimenting different genres, i
was pleasantly surprised by chosen lords — but even
so, you only get to hear a tiny part of the musical spectrum
with a single artist. and only a little part of it with a
specific genre like idm. and it seems to me like other idm
artists who were groundbreaking once are now pretty much
repeating themselves (it's been a while since i bought an
autechre album and i might never do it again, i have
spokes by plaid but i never listen to it, i've tried
throttle furniture by clark but i found so bland and
generic i deleted the mp3s after one listen and a half...)
— idm is not to blame for that, it happens in every other
genre of music. but i'm not an idm fan or an indie rock fan
or whatever; i like music, no matter the genre as
long as it pleases me. so when it starts to get boring
somewhere, i just try and go somewhere else. and i often
like what i find.

Cant stand it when TG is all anybody can come up with in
reference with "real" Industrial.

so many other acts...

Its funny though how if an industrial act structures its
songs in Rock format they are no longer industrial.. (as
considered by industrial elitists)

I.E. NIN, KMFDM, TKK
