Illogical Things Americans Do

1. Represent the date in the format year-day-month instead
of the more logical year-month-day.

2. Say 'I could care less' when what they really MEAN is 'I
COULDN'T care less...'.

3. Kill their most forward-thinking leaders.

4. Elect their most backward-thinking leaders.

5. Invade Middle Eastern countries and kill thousands of
children.

I always thought day-month-year would be most logical.

I like month day year. Because it seems to transfer easiest
from written to numeric.

October 26, 2006 = 10/26/06

South-Americans?

number 2 on your list is the highest in my list of annoying
things that Americans do

and what's even worse is that when you explain to them the
semantics of their words and the actual meaning of what
they're saying they say that we're saying it wrong!

day-month-year
ascending duration of time for each unit; logical
month-day-year
WTF?!?!?! fucking americans

on all the old eastern bloc stamps i have, most countries
have toe revolution date on them, and they put the month in
roman numerals, like 19.VII.1948 , no room for confusion. we
shold do that

oh, and when a guy goes into a school and shoots loads of
kids, americans never blame the guy who did it, but blame
the music he listened to or the films he watched or the
video games he played. like marilyn manson got blamed for
columbine.

do you have any sources for that? I don't need much, just an
article talking about how the music he listened to or how
other people treated him could be considered factors in an
evaluation of his actions. The main point in my paper this
semester is about stuff like that and how it just won't hold
up.

that is, I want an article that I can use as an example, an
article that has as its positive thesis that he couldn't be
entirely blamed for his actions or something like that...

yeah, but was there someone claiming explicitly that marilyn
manson was blamed or wasn't it just some interview moore did
with manson because he had been blamed for it?

oh well, I'll probably get the point across that it happens
without a source.

offline Ezkerraldean from the lowest common denominator (United Kingdom) on 2006-10-28 06:14 [#01993849]

some woman was moaning about how metal/rock music was to
blame because it preaches hate etc. and moore interviewed
manson about the whole thing. i think there was some stuff
about manson being pointed out specifically. i dont have it
on DVD or anything, so i cant check.

of the cheap shots.

it's unfair to blame the perpetrator, the parents, the music
the perp listened to, or the films he/she watched

why can't it just be this simple:

it was the goddamn fucking kids' fault for being annoying

this is a very general phenomenon you find all over the
world these days, though, and after that 90s psychology
thing these days it's actually more and more about
sociobiology. Hey! We found the gene that makes you
criminal! ..no, wait.. no, it wasn't after all. How about
this one then? No. This one? No. It seems it doesn't exist.
Oh well, let's keep up searching for it.

Hey, I'm an egoistical being, so I don't take responsibility
for my actions.

genes can play a role in everything, as can upbringing. look
into the whole nature/nurture thing. but i cannot see how
any action cannot be moderated by common bloody sense, or
human empathy.

I think the only thing sociobiologists have been able to
prove lately is that they're good at misusing statistics and
that they aren't able to find any of the genes they're
talking about. They've even gone so far as to prove that the
genes don't necessarily control your behaviour even in the
sense of predisposing your body for higher testosterone
production in that hormone levels like the testosterone
level doesn't depend solely on your body, but can rise and
sink according to how you view yourself; the alpha male has
higher testosterone levels because he is the alpha
male, he isn't the alpha male because he has higher
testosterone levels.

That's an excellent graph if you assume the phrases are
statements on the amount of caring contained within an
individual. Perhaps Americans are more concerned with
outward appearances than true inward feeling. For instance,
there are plenty of commercials and advertisements that
state something to the effect of "buy this to show that you
care," implying that "if you give this to someone, they will
think that you care, even if you don't." Feelings are truely
internal, and the only way to share them with others is by
external action (unless you have telepathy). Maybe by saying
"they could care less" they are implying that through their
actions, they would be able to present an appearance of
caring less, because emotionally they already care less than
what they are showing. By saying "I couldn't care less," one
would more than likely be accurately converting their
emotions into physical form (one exception being if they
were attempting to deceive someone into thinking they care
less than they really do, but I think that would be rare in
normal conversation since there seems to be all of this
emphasis on being caring people and everything).

I initially was against The Americanians saying "I could
care less", but then I came to realise, that it has its own
meaning in the sense that "This is so boring, I could care
less about it, but I'm not going to get that worked
up about it, I'm just going to attribute it my usual,
everyday level of dismissiveness without going the whole hog
of completely not caring. That's how little I care,
or as much, depending on your point of view".

I think they say it like that because they like to talk
more, even when saying less, they have to talk more.

don't assume that all americans drive V8's and are blind to
the effects of the "american dream". there is at least
.0001% of americans who don't believe the dream is good and
would like to see the country think up a new dream, one that
doesn't involve destroying the rest of the world.

those traitors! long live the american dream! V8 escalades
and super-sized freedom fries for all!

disney land, coca cola and cheap tube socks at wal-mart. as
long as you're willing to be completely in debt to a credit
card company, you can have it all!

no sane person can deny the purity of our dream. unless
they want a free waterboarding trip to guantanamo.

hopefully, when we finish spreading freedom, democracy and
low fat mayonnaise in iraq we can move on to the rest of the
world. these things take time, though, some people don't
understand how much time it takes to force people to love
you and embrace your social values, not to mention how long
it takes to get a nice even layer of mayo over an entire
country! time, and money. two hundred million dollars. a
day.

year month day is the most sensible (saying "logical" in
this case means you don't understand logic..) because you
may use integer and string comparison routines (the latter
if the numbers are zero padded) to determine if a date is
later than another date.
